Buy Your Way To Pirate Legend

  • I've played hard to get to Legend, and I'm okay with not having more legend stuff yet, but I'm really disappointed that players can basically buy (in game currency) their way to Legend.
...eventually. No matter how small, or large of an amount, in my humble opinion, players shouldn't be able to buy reputation points.

  • I think this sounds really entitled, what about those people who spent hours shooting themselves onto thrones in stead of grinding voyages, should they not be rewarded for their effort in progression?

I think with the time me and my crew spent doing these events and helping others we could've ground another level easy.

You speak as if they didn't work for it.
    But they did.

Getting it for free would be when people would get it with cookies.

  • @hynieth agreed

  • I've done the Maths more than once
    1- 50 in all 3 factions = 100 weeks
10 levels in all factions = 20 weeks

You have to EARN the Doubloons to get the rep in the first place. SO as @Hynieth says, it isn't for free at all.

  • I think you dislike the fact someone get Legend more easier than you. It's a bit childish to be honest. The fact you got Legend this 'quick' means you have the time to play a lot. Me for instance, I have a job and other responsibilities so I cannot play that s**t ton of time on the game. This way they lessen the grind a bit and I don't think thats wrong. When you're legend you AGAIN have a big grind of 93 athena's before you are super duper pirate legend.

I think you should be more p****d because of the lack of content for pirate legends, instead of someone else getting PL easier than you did.

    EDIT: I'm at 46,40,42

  • @handsh0t Because of the lack of Pirate legend content I'm be stoked to see it become easier. The more legends out tere the more feasable it is to make content that applies mostly or only to legends.

I think that 1st of all you need to use Search button on a forums and 2nd stop making same threads.

Game will evolve so new players can get legendary content in few more ways than stupid grind.

So yes they can spend their doubloons like they want.

No, no. All the events have been great. Everyone competing and working at these events definitely deserve something. I'm having a blast and I'm loving my new currency. I just don't see how making it easier and easier to achieve the sought after Pirate Legend title... Well, it just takes something away.

I do find it strange that you've used "entitled" as something negative, while in the same breath seem to think those that are not Legend and those that participate in events are "entitled" to the new currency. I suppose working your way through all the events is awesome. Well, guess what. Working your way to 50/50/50 is awesome too.

Sorry. This is my first day on the forum and this was my first post. Thank you, mod.

  • I'm a legend and hit it over 8 weeks ago so before the RNG update and ability to purchase reputation. It doesn't bother me at all that it is now quicker for people to increase their reputation levels.

Legend doesn't mean anything anyway. There is no skill involved at all in hitting it. It simply means you have likely played the game a bit more and doesn't mean you are even any good at the game. I've played with Legends who don't have a clue how to sail and spend 20 minutes looking at the map trying to find even the largest islands.

  • Back in my day you had to hussle to get to pirate legend. Kids these days...

Honestly though it doesn't bother me. Rare said they wanted events to be a way to have fun whilst still working toward legend. This is exactly that!

  • im cool with it,like the others said u have still to play the game
n u cant boost much level.where is the problem when u can level up by having more fun.

You hit the nail on the head there, matey! This game is all about the journey you take and the adventures you have. I reached Pirate Legend yesterday by doing the trading company voyages like yourself, but I see no harm in newer players being able to 'buy' their reputation levels.

Consider this: If a pirate earned every single doubloon so far and hasn't spend a single one, they would have 250 doubloons. That would total 250 / 30 = 8 recommendations. That's 8 levels they can spend across the three factions. That doesn't get you to Pirate Legend by a long shot.

Man, the journey has been a blast! Has been. Continues to be. Even just hours ago we were having a blast working on the new event.

I agree that using the doubloons can only buy a tiny amount, over a long period, but it seems wrong. For instance, one of the guys in our crew/clan is almost a Legend now. He will not be using the doubloons to move up and entire level, as he feels like it cheapens the experience.

As stated, this is my opinion. So, thank you for a friendly and kind reply.

  • What about all those legends who used to cheese the merchants quests.

The legends who leeched their crew from within the brig

The legends who dropped in on crews unloading treasure.

I'm waaaaaaay more cool with spending hard earned dubloons on these levels then I'm with the type of players I just named.

Just past week I saw a Pirate legend on the ferry switching his instruments every 10 seconds. So Sad.

  • i think the real legends should finaly get something for being legend, like a unique weapon set time based on when u got legend.

or a shirt... a purple worn down shirt, written on it "i became legend and all i got is this lousy shirt"

I've seen so many of these players. It's rather unsettling to know that they got there before most of us and in turn gave it a bad name. Well, not all of course.

  • I did the grind so am not too happy that people can now buy Pirate Legend status, it degrades the status of the title.

I would be fun if players who bought their way to Pirate Legend status got a tattered hand-me-down Pirate Legend outfit.

The game could still keep track of their non bought status and the outfit would automatically upgrade to the non-tattered version once the real grind was complete.

This way people in a rush could buy their way in and people who did it via the grind route would still have value in the title.

  • @murkrage Most people who meet me in game don't even know I'm a Legend ^^ I refuse to wear the title and clothes I just like my pirate as a normal run of the mill guy who happens to be able to drop Athena Missions for his crew ^^

  • Oh what now this was about the THRONES and the Dublons? Pfff... for a moment I thought reallife money was involved somehow.

Dude the Dublons are another kind of farmingcontent event.
Variety is the keyword. No one is forced to become Pirate Legend in a certain kind of way.

There are so many ways to tackle the grind efficiently but yet no one complains.
Why? Cause we all throw ourselfs at the most efficient ways anyway.
And if these way are Dublons now due to certain kind of limited events, so be it.

  • @dislex-fx Wait...are we talking about the integrity of Pirate Legend???

Do you remember the FIRST Pirate Legend???

Do you remember how he got there???

I have no issue with what he did but the lesson he taught is use your noggin and get there by any means necessary.

    Work smarter not harder.

  • I woulda thought the stories you made while playing upto and being pirate legend woulda been enough. Weird

  • @schelmflosse300
That's a good point you make there.

@DISLEX-fx have you ever voted to cancel missions because there werent enough X-Mark the spot maps, not enough captains on an island or golden animals? Did you cheese the merchants? If yes then you cant really complain about people taking an easier route
    :-)

  • In each event, people need to choose what they are going to spend their doubloons on. Do you want to level faster or buy time limited items that are a part of a set?
Your choice doesn't really matter, since it all boils down to cosmetic items in the end.

Maybe someone kept all of them to reach legend, but now there will be a full set that he won't be able to complete.

Personally, I'm doing both. I buy all the items first and then spend the rest on the letters. From this event for example, I will be able to buy 4 of them if I complete everything.

Getting the doubloons in the first place requires some work as well. I wouldn't say that it's the same as grinding a whole level at 40-50, but you still need to do stuff that takes time and cooperation.
Some people will do everything just not to encounter other players, so they are missing a lot of doubloons.

Anyway, I have no problem with it since being a legendary pirate means nothing.

I've said this in a couple of other threads but, since yet another of the "I earned my way to Pirate Legend by grinding..." posts has popped up, I'll repeat myself... again.

I am not a Pirate Legend, yet. But, I'm guessing you crewed up either with randoms or a regular crew to gain those levels with each faction, correct? Guess what, that means you had help and did not get to Legendary status on you own.

You might have worked with others but that title is not just yours unless you've actually gone the distance and solo'd to 50 in each faction.

If you really want to discuss "earning" the title, then walk the walk or walk the plank.

For the record, this is not just about yourself. It's about everyone who has gained the title and thinks that their efforts are more "prestigious" than others.

  • @handsh0t *more easily

  • Ok, since I haven't seen this argument yet I'll post it.

It's a pirate game. That is the argument I constantly see to justify the many of the actions taken in this game. If you can use whatever means necessary to steal/plunder and sink other players/pirates in the game, shouldn't you do the same to work towards Pirate Legend status, as long as it is something allowed in the game...ie, no hacking, etc.

If progression in this game actually meant something, as it does in other games (unlocking certain weapons, items, powers, etc) and PL gave you special things that weren't just cosmetic, then yeah I can see the point of tarnishing the journey to PL by "paying" for it but progression is nothing in this game. It's just a journey.

If my crew and I work to get the doubloons, then we should be able to spend it on leveling up. If we go out and find treasure, sell crates of teas and sugars and kill skeleton captains, then why not let us use that cold, hard gold to buy levels. We are still playing the game but how we use the allowed mechanics to get PL shouldn't matter and shouldn't devalue our worth as PLs.

  • @dislex-fx It's really an early adopter thing. You buy an Xbox One X and launch cool, you have a shinning new system. But oh no, a few months later the Xbox One X now comes with Sea of Thieves. Same thing with Pirate Legend, you put in the effort in the beginning with only a few ways to achieve the status. It was inevitable that as the game grows there will be more was to get to Legend more quickly.

But I'm sure we can at least look forward to there being more milestones for Legends down the line. I don't mind that people can earn rep through these events, it doesn't make my journey any less remarkable, I still earned it my way; this is theirs.

P.s I was one of the early adopters for the X and didn't get SOT for free. (Sad face)

  • I get the "you can buy experience for your doubloons" part, but the fact that is now a whole level is a bit too much. I think it should be/have stayed a fixed amount of reputation independent of the level your are on.

  • @dislex-fx

I’m fine with buying rep. What do you lose if I buy rep for myself? Do you think you actually earned something important in life, being a pirate legend?

Come on guy it’s a video game... some of us have lives....

  • @dislex-fx i loled at the first three word i played hard .... dude its not a job its a game u played hard only mean u have much more time to waste then average ppl and anyway what u get a pl .... nothing big lol so stop wanna be [Mod edited] and let ppl enjoy reaching pl a lil bit faster

  • What I don't understand is why it matters how someone reaches Legend. You got there and that is great! If suddenly 50 more people reached it today, how does that affect you? You still are a legend. Nothing changes for you.

I'm only 35 in OoS and Merchant and almost 40 in Gold Hoarders. I'm a long way from legend and that's fine. When I reach legend I don't see how that will change your legend status. It's an individual experience. Even with my family playing together, we are all different levels and on our own journey.

I feel your view on this is questionable. Why does it matter to you how someone else got their Legend? Like others have said to get doubloons you still need to put in work. Thats not really different than the PL's that "crazy taxied" their way to the top, personally I don't really see that as a feat to be celebrated any more then someone getting there with commendations. I personally LOVE it I got 3 levels on OOS last night in 2 hours from 40-43. It's a great addition Rare is listening, We asked for more ways to reach legend and to break up the monotonous grind. They answered. Thanks Rare.
