Sigh, really? My skeleton key despanwed.

  • I cleared a skeleton fort solo and got the key. I placed it on the floor where I killed the captain and went up the tower just to check if there are no ships nearby.
Went back and p**f the key is gone. I searched the entire fort for about 40 minutes, to see if it got stuck somewhere but nothing.

There were no ships, mermaids or players. The server was empty so that's why I did it in the first place. Also no, It's not because my name is "blind" haha.
Anyway, after searching for a long time, the server kicked me out with the message "connection to the server lost" even though my connection was fine.

So yeah, this was really frustrating. All I could do was look at the loot from above, knowing I had the key and it simply despawned for no reason. I regret not just holding it at all times but I just wanted to run up and check quickly.
I always do this and this has never happend before.

  • I wonder if the key despawning was perhaps a sign that the server was having issues?
It's always a shame when this happens. A lot of folk recently have been posting about the loss of Fort treasure due to DC issues. Thankfully it's something I've never experienced!

Good work solo clearing the fort thought matey!

Hehe thanks. I clear them all the time, this event just makes them easier.

The skull fort was up for 3 hours without anyone else going there. Maybe the server was buggy to begin with.
When I saw that no one else has gone there for that long, I figured I'll clear it before logging off. It despawned within 20 seconds or so. That's what made it so weird.

  • I Had a key turn into a inactive object. No one could pick it up or interact with it. We all died at the same time and went back to the key and it was normal like nothing ever happened and we got the loot.
Maybe your key got stuck in the floor where you set it down. Sucks that happened to you.

  • @blindnev Ouch.
I'd give you 10k out of my profile account if I could.
The gold is meaningless to me but the fort loot would have helped your reps too.

lol About the name and connection with not finding the key.

Please take it onboard as a lesson to never let go of the key again.

Fair winds and happy sailing. :o)

Oh now that is interesting. It could have been because it had been active for so long that it was time to reset.
I have always been under the impression that skull forts re-spawn / reset every three hours.

edit: The scheduled reset would be to prevent glitched or keys being removed from the fort for a long period of time.

    Yep, may be this. @BlindNev
I always had that impression too, the forts duration being around 3 hours.

Maybe the fact you dropped the key the game assumed a respawn State.
The loot remained inside or disappeared too?

I don't really care about the loot that much either. I gave others the fort loot before. This was just really annoying because It was 100% mine and the game was like "nope".

This just adds more to the list of things I need to watch out for when playing. Don't hoard too much loot because the server might crash, beware of megalodon because it can fly and now always hold the key because it might despawn.

We learn every day I suppose.

I say 3 hours but it could have been even longer. The fort might have been up even before I joined.

The loot was there though. I could only stare at it while looking at my empty keyless hand.

@Admiral-RRRSole You are right. I should have put it on my ship instead. Oh well.

  • @blindnev Yep

You forgot today's most important lesson, don't wait for almost three hours before hitting the active fort.

There are so many times we can kick ourselves for waiting too long.
Due to personal track record, I don't take on a fort that is already active when I first spawn into the game. Those sessions have never been all that rewarding for us.
But then the times the cloud has tauntingly called my name over and over but we choose to ignore it for over an hour then decide that enough is enough and take it on, only to be joined by every other ship on the server. lol

Yes this is true. I wanted to do voyages today since I was doing forts yesterday all the time.
While playing I was like, "clear the fort already! It's taunting me..."

Decided to do it when I was about to log off and well, this happend. I'm not sure about leaving it if it was already up, but I will keep the key on my ship from now on.

Like I said, I've done this many times. This is just the first time it despawned.

  • @admiral-rrrsole It's 3 hours starting from when the captain is killed.

  • Yea it’s really strange that it despawned for you though. We've left the key on an island stashed in a cave. We’ve left it stashed in a bush on a island. We’ve left it stashed on the fort island as well as on the boat. I couldn’t say it was for 3 hours but it was always pretty long because we were fighting over the key usually. Never seen it despawn.

I was in game insisting to a guy that the key doesn’t despawn but he swore it might and just wouldn’t let go of it and wouldn’t help fight. He cowered below deck with the key like it was the last fort ever. I guess I know why he was behaving that way now. I think I will keep stashing as needed and won’t worry about the despawn yet. As long as we aren’t trying to clip it’s graphic into another, it shouldn’t be much of a problem. I hope.

  • Ouch!!! I had a pig crate despawn during an Athena last night that started a series of misfortunate events.

  • @admiral-greyjoy That's gotta hurt too.
Always do the two MA quests first and turn them in before doing anything else, despite where they fall on the radial.
I know it takes longer sailing back and forth to each outpost but it saves losing out on the Athena chest.

Fair winds and happy sailing. :o)
