Too many Megalodons

  • Ever since the update where Rare announced the increased spawn rate of Megalodons, I couldn't help but notice how many of them there were! Without fail, five games in a row I've had to deal with the harassment of Meg on both sloops and galleons; this is compared to the significantly lesser three times I've fought the Kraken in ALL of my Sea of Thieves Career. I think Rare is missing the point of Rare encounters like these in the fact that they're supposed to be Rare. The Kraken became a nuisance after the first battle because it was just so unnecessary to fight; likewise with the Megalodon, once you've killed it once, there really is no reason to kill it again. All these events are is a waste of time because you don't get anything from them; maybe if Rare gave us incentive to beat these creatures, then it'd be less of a nuisance to battle them and there'd be a reason behind it.

So Rare I plead: Please drop the encounter rate of Megalodons!

The Megalodon doesn't stop you from sailing though like the Kraken does and most of them don't even attack you unless you attack them first. From the five or six encounters we've had Megan only attacked us once causing 3 upper deck holes and actually swam off after the first bite. Could be we've just been lucky though :)

Btw in a Rare game, all encounters are Rare encounters :)

  • I thoroughly enjoy the megalodon encounters. In fact, most of the time my concern is losing the megalodon, since I'm usually on mission when I encounter it and I enjoy battling the beast. I've had no problems killing it every time I tried and escaping it is pretty easy in my experience if you don't want to fight it.

    I hate you.

  • Yea, while I see Megan's kiddos fairly often, I don't tend to actually have much of an issue with them. One of them (the one with neon blue on it) seems to be pretty timid generally, and is normally deterred by a single shot from a pistol. The darker one seems to have more potential to actually get aggressive and try and take a bite at the boat, but if you keep aware of it and pop a couple shots at it when it charges that normally stops it. Though this one does also seem prone to just follow you about too.

There could be other ones out there I suppose, but these are the only two I've personally run into - and I run into them often. I look at them as less of a threat and more just something interesting to see from time to time on the seas. Ambient wildlife, basically, and not much more.

  • @spunkus-skunkus .... what about no ? Stay on a island prob fixed ^^ no joke megalodon. Are so cool they jelped me
Bunch of time we are almost bff now !

  • I love Meg! We encounter her often on our travels, yes but seldom get attacked. In fact, we've only had one time since she was released into the wild that there was real aggression.

Like others have said, she usually only attacks if provoked. Most of those attacks tend to be small nibbles of the stern. Love bites really. Also, they updated her so that she will swim off if you approach an island so she's easily deterred.

That being said, we did have an encounter with a very large dark meg that took us completely by surprise and cost us our ship. She about swallowed our sloop, knocking both me and my partner off as we sailed full speed toward Shipwreck Bay. By the time we managed to catch a mer back the island had added a hole or two and we couldn't repair in time.

This adds so much to the game though! The excitement when you spot her. Is she gonna play nice? Is that the one who ate us last time? Think she'll let me pet her?

Just watch out for this one:

  • This makes me ask, does the Meg attack the sloops or not?, because i haven't seen one at all yet.

  • @bl00d-thirty-99 I've had them show up on a sloop multiple times but we ha e never engaged so it's been a peaceful interaction

  • I love the high megalodon spawn rate, although thus far we haven't been actually attacked by one. They just circle our gally and then after a few warning shots vanish again.

Thought so too for a few days but yesterday I did not encountered a single one of them.
It may just be coincidence for you.

    @PumpkinKangaroo
    NICE screenshot! :D

  • @bl00d-thirty-99 Same. No encounters as of yet. I'm usually solo, though. Not sure if that makes a difference.

My picture above shows that Meg will attack a sloop. That was just a few days ago. We mostly play on a sloop and encounter her often. Maybe we are just lucky.

Yeah there is one that seems to hang about near Golden Sands Outpost. Not sure if she only attacks sloops or both. As for the frequency of the Megalodon there is nothing wrong with it. The times I have encountered the one mentioned above we just sail away from her at full speed and enter an island cell so she just gives up even still at full speed she struggles to keep up.

  • I think you mean NOT ENOUGH megalodons. The Megalodons an awesome addition and I, and I'm sure a lot of people, love the new edition. The Kraken is boring and it's not a fun battle. The Megalodon is incredibly fun.
1: because it allows you to escape if needed
2: it gives you a great side activity when your bored
3: and the achievement of beating a Megalodon while you have tons of Loot on your ship, is very satisfying.
However many Megalodons you've had so far is very lucky. I have maybe gotten 3 since the hungry in deep and everyone has been a blast to encounter. If you don't want to fight the Megalodon there are multiple things you can do to avoid it. You are not stuck in the water and you have multiple ways of maneuverability to get away from this creature if you don't want to fight it.

I've seen her more than a few times on a Sloop. And I've encountered her once and almost beat her before my game crashed. Such a great battle! I was on the verge of beating her with just myself and my ship.

I've only encountered the megalodon on the sloop. I've been in battle with it about four times now and won every time, and it was always solely as well. The megalodon is a threat, but not an overwhelming one. If you keep your supplies well stocked for repairs and health, and hit the meg with somewhere around ten plus cannon shots, you kill it.

It's an awesome addition to the game, it makes the ocean feel more alive and more interactive. Can't wait for more content, I'm pretty sure it's practically confirmed Rare is adding fishing to the game to boot.

Right?! It makes the game seen more of immersive. And yeah I believe fishing is going to become part of the game pretty soon. Hopefully shark collecting! And based on Falcor Gaming's great lore explanations, hopefully there's a giant Phoenix on the way too for a next big great boss battle

Fishing as an additional food source option would be great. Personally, I'd love to see harpoons added into the game, that can be used against sharks, megalodons and even the kraken. As a game mechanic, they can't be thrown far, so they'd be a poor choice for PvP, but effective at being thrown downwards at sea creatures.

Imagine if they added harpoons with ropes as well...a sloop harpooning a meg gets dragged along for a ride, and rowboats harpooning sharks would also get an exciting ride. xD

Now you're thinking about some crazy Resident Evil 4 mechanics here. I love it! But yes I'm serious wailing would be great with harpoons I thought about this several times. Additional weapons would just be insanely good for the game. Spears harpoons axes whatever you name it. All would be a supremely welcome addition to the game. Especially if they all had something to do too. Access could be used to chop down trees and the trees could be used as Lumber to make wooden planks Maybe. Spears could be used as an ammunition to throw at creatures or skeletons perhaps. IDK man I believe RARE's got the expertise to pull a lot of this off. No man's Sky turned a lot of people away from it based on its lackluster start, then turned everything on its head and was Reborn. I think RARE's more competent than that, and will do a great job with continuing this games content

  • I haven't actually encountered a meg in the wild yet, not since THD anyway

  • @the-portalstorm Environmental destruction and modification would be a massive undertaking for Rare and I don't think it fits their vision of the game.

Don't get me wrong, I'd kill to have Minecraft levels of world modification in almost all games, but I don't think that's in the roadmap nor really a SoT concept.

I think the best suggestions and feedback for Rare is ones where you don't propose radically altering the game mechanics and gameplay.

For example, the latest addition of skeleton gunpowder barrels and fuses on barrels is a perfect fit. It introduces some really nifty and new gameplay mechanics, but didn't have to do any large redesign of the game.

As an example of a suggestion I made in another thread, prisoner NPCs as a mission option would be new content, but it fits very nicely into existing game mechanics and design, like the brig and a NPC not requiring advanced AI coding.

  • @spunkus-skunkus most the megs dont even do anything leave the megs alone they did nothing wrong

  • I like when she shows up. Makes me happy! Too bad its always when Im doing an Athena or with the chest itself to take to the tavern. If not, I would be glad in playing with her lol

  • @ajm123 The only issue I have with that, is when they attack without any aggravation from our crew; it's not fun trying to go to the skeleton fort against the wind, whilst the Megalodon is making your boat do 180's... FOR THE FIFTH TIME. I'd much prefer Megalodons to be as scarce as the Kraken rather than as constant as the skeletons.

But I guess luck clearly isn't on my side.

  • @spunkus-skunkus yeh i see them rarely but when i do it is more then once never attacks though

  • @pumpkinkangaroo "killer" screengrab matey
I, for one, am immensely pleased with the Meg spawns. It really breaks up voyages into fun experiences, even if they do swim away most of the time. I wish i could drop chickens or pigs in the water to have it follow us like a creature companion...

  • I think the frequency is great, and perfectly tuned. Most of the time they just come and say hi, and I think it adds really well to the atmosphere of the game. It also breaks up the monotony of sailing between islands, gives you something to keep an eye out for other than ships. I just wish I could tame it with Merrick's shanty and use it to call a meg when I'm being chased.

But yeah, Rare, keep this encounter just like it is.

  • @big-mean-chief Thank you.

I would spend so much time gathering chickens if I could get her to follow me! Forget voyages, I'd spend all my time leading her around the map to gather more chickens.

  • @spunkus-skunkus I mainly play solo on a sloop and I have seen more megalodons than ever before I mean im level 35 for all ranks and I have only ever fought one single kraken while I was on a galleon and while on galleons have hardly seen as many megalodons as I do on my lonely sloop and I find it highly annoying since 1 krakens don't even attack solo sloops and 2 these mythical sea beasts that are supposed to be rarely encountered are not rare at all now which seems highly ironic from a company with the name rare and I believe it would be nice if the megalodongs ****ed off when it came to solo sloops like the kraken and had a lowered spawn rate due to the oversaturation currently
