Nvidia Vsync Issue

  • Hi all,

    First of all specs:
    i7 8700k
    GTX 1070
    16gb DDR4 3000
    SSD
    Windows 10 64bit

This morning I loaded up SOT after not playing for a few weeks and I seem to have an issue when using vsync in the game. With the vsync enabled the games fps runs at my monitor frequency cap (72fps) as normal, but then for no reason it will take a random nose dive down to around 25fps even with very little happening and the screen. Happens around every 20 seconds or so. I have tried a 'clean' re-installation of the driver (ver 398.36) using DDU but still the problem persists! Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone have any advice?

Playing without vsync the fps hangs around 90 to 120 fps on the max graphics settings, but I cant play it like that due to screen tearing.

    Cheers.

  • Try setting Vsync to Fast in the Nvidia Control Panel.

  • Glad to know I'm not alone in this issue. I too run a 1070 though your CPU exceeds mine (i7-6700HQ) our specs are similar otherwise.

    I rush into 90+ FPS without Vsync...but tearing...yea...

With V-sync I rail hard into 60 and it wants more... but it will drop impressively fast into the teens without obvious cause.

In fact, I have a weaker system (Asus laptop) that runs the game and experiences less FPS drop.

More than mere FPS drop it actually slogs so badly that I think the FPS drop is a SECONDARY issue, it feels very much like rubberbanding and showcases symptoms very similar to rubber banding even if I am not teleporting around.

I've also had increasing issues with interface lag, noted very much like a latency issue without ping alterations. I'll be running in a direction and continue in the direction for several seconds. I thought this was possibly my "W" key sticking... but even swapping weapons, trying to read maps or jumping, anything I do while charging forward doesn't happen. And, much like lag, suddenly all the inputs I've tried to commit... catch up all at once, but yes in sequence - clearly a lag issues, despite ping remaining the same, to me?!

    PC advantage my tookis.

  • Ok found a solution. Sanni suggested I use fast sync, but that made the whole game gitter for me and it felt even worse, but i knew he was onto something.

What has made the game smooth for me now is doing the following...
Turn off the game vsync and frame rate lock. Then in the nvidia control panel (or nvidiaprofileinspector) manually set v-sync to on and set its mode to 'adaptive'. Now normally this would give me screen tearing if the fps dropped below, in my case 72fps but for some reason in this mode the fps drops don't occur so it stays rock solid with zero tearing.

This is strange and something the devs should take a look at.

    Thanks anyway guys.

  • For Fast Sync to work without tearing you need at least double the FPS of your monitor. So in your case at least 144fps.
But Adaptive Sync is also a great solution.
