Suggestion: Commission a Merchant Trade Route

  • Sea of Thieves has been incredibly fun. Every new patch has made it even better. And I'd like to throw another idea to the Rare team that might add more fun to the game.

One of the many things I love about the game is the balance of tradeoffs; Risk VS Reward. For example: you can carry powder kegs on your ship. Useful but dangerous. For every potential reward there is an element of risk. And world events are planned around this (e.g. Skeleton Forts).

Another event could be something the players trigger that could create more opportunity for riches and potential for PvP. Imagine a new NPC ship at port at an outpost. You pay some gold, and the ship departs at a moderate speed to another outpost laden with riches... spices, tea, bananas, or chests, the total value of which would be less than the commission the player paid. Once the ship reached the trade destination, the players who paid into the trade ship would receive back their gold along with a tidy profit.

This leaves the crew who commissioned the trade ship with a range of choice: do you escort the trade ship along its route to make sure no other pirates come to plunder the trade goods? Or do you leave the ship to its fate and hope it gets there unharmed? Or perhaps seek a voyage for some treasure nearby to keep a watchful eye?

Of course this means that with trade ships sailing the seas, they will be ripe targets for pirates to plunder. Choices abound. What say ye?

  • I’m not sure how difficult it would be to implement this into the game, considering that many servers are laggy enough as it is. Introducing something as elaborate as this may conflict with the previous issue.

However, the concept is solid and it’s one I can get behind. If it could work, it would be a welcomed addition to the Sea of Thieves!

  • yep....genuinely cool idea. I would dig something like this.

would have to balance it for server activity though. dead server would equal lots of free money.

  • Sounds interesting, i love it.

  • Fantastic idea! However I think that the “merchant” ship could be another player instead of AI that gets paid by the game or somthing like that, meaning you have another way of making profit, this time in a non violent way, for example the merchant alliance pays the “couriers” 1000 coins to deliver 10 chickens from A-B and the couriers could then hire pirates for protection? With the couriers loosing profit for each chicken that doesn’t make it within the allotted time? It’s just and an idea but your original one seems very promising!
