Game Chat Mic Volume

  • For some reason, everyone says my game chat volume is extremely low, and they can barely hear me. It's not my mic because I can be heard just fine in xbox party chat or discord. I don't see any option to raise my mic volume in game. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Are you on PC? Are you using a USB microphone or USB soundcard?

  • @sanni I'm on PC yes. I use a USB microphone. Astro A50s.

  • I encounter the same sometimes. I'm also PC with a USB headset. I'm fine everywhere else and most of the time in game chat. Sometimes, however, I'm told I'm really quiet. I can adjust my mic location and that seems to help, but not always.

Couldn't really say. I know that Skype has a setting that reduces other audio programs running on your PC. I had to go into the Skype app settings and turn that off.

    Maybe Discord has something similar?

Its about Ingame Voice chat not Discord

Try this one Right click on your sound bar - sounds
    Then this :

Mb it will help, othewise you can add some volume to your mic in same option "Recording"

  • @nefrit-od Thanks for the advice but I don't think it's my mic because it works fine in all other applications.

  • @mortarchelle

Put the mic closer to your mouth. Mine is even touching my lips sometimes. The ingame setting for voice chat volume can't be much higher than standard...

  • @gatorwocky Thanks for the tip! How do you change mic location? Also, I'm always told my mic is too quiet. It usually isn't an issue because me and the crew just use xbox chat or discord, but with the alliance system now, it's hard coordinating these events when they can't hear me :/

Its about mic belive me i got same issue.
The problem is other games usually support in game voice setting where you can choose whic mic use. But SoT is bind to Xbox app, and Xbox App bind to windows default settings.
So if you make it work perfect on a windows setting perfectly it will work in game aswell.
My solution for ingame chat was to add 10 dB to mic volume.

  • @nefrit-od ok I'll definitely give that a try, thanks so much!!

  • There's the option to increase your Mic levels in Win10 that can help. Right click the volume icon on the lower right. Select "sounds". in the pop-up choose "recording". Navigate on that page to the appropriate microphone your using and right click that mic. In the drop down choose "properties". In the next pop-up select "Levels" page. on that page you can adjust the base mic levels or boost the audio output of the microphone. This will make you louder across the system. Background noise and static are issues here as well as potentially blowing friends ears off.

Once that is tweaked you can have party friends reduce your volume by lowering their party chat volume overall. This will provide the added side effect of your being louder in game for strangers despite your friends hating you.

Here's the crux... this won't help.

Something(s) on the Sea of Thieves hate us. I can say based on experience that there are dozens of audio issues players face in this game. Between one crew mate and I the inability to hear one another in game chat is obnoxious, because we can hear everyone else just fine. It only affects he and I in regards to one another mutually. We can hear one another fine or even very loudly in the Xbox app or console party chat, but in game we're practically mutes as far as one another are concerned. We've tried altering in game audio settings such as output mode, directional vs non-directional, etc. We've even lowered all the volume sliders while raising appropriate in game chat options. nothing worked yet.

Simply having an option to reduce or lower crew members audio with a +/- and mute function would go a LONG ways towards solving this issue.

Maybe my top paragraph can help, but I doubt you needed that guidance. If it does, great! Otherwise, sorry mate if you get an answer I'd love one myself!

  • Good thread.
Would have liked ingame voip and group voip to be at equal levels. Ingame chat is always lower for everyone, which strikes me as odd, as it incentivizes "silent pirates" that can't be heard speaking by any other crews.
Group chat is also not recorded on the Xbox game capture recordings! :/

  • USB soundcards/microphones on Windows 10 don't have the +20db mic boost activated by default and there also is no option to enable it manually in the audio settings as was the case with previous Windows versions.

The official Sea of Thieves controller and by extension all other Xbox One controllers have the exact same issue.

    You only have five options:

    • boost the mic level in your voip app like discord (sadly Sea of Thieves does not seem to have any setting for that)
    • plug your headset into the audio ports at the back of your PC if that is possible, then you can active the +20db boost in the audio settings
    • buy a different USB soundcard/microphone that has the mic boost activated in the driver (Logitech G510 for example)
    • wait until the manufacturer releases new drivers (unlikely to happen)
    • increase the mic boost with software like explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrAnIRO9kiU
  • I appreciate the suggestions. I'll give this a shot when these blood sucking people I work for let me out of here.

Some feedback: I checked my mic levels, it was already raised to 100%. I decided to change the communications icon as suggested in the above screenshot but wasn't hopeful it would work. It DID!! I am now much louder in game chat. Thank you SO much for this tip and for anyone else having this issue on PC, give it a try!

  • @gatorwocky LOL I know the feels. If you're on PC, try the suggestion directly above this post.

@Blooddoll22 I greatly appreciate the advice, thank you :) You're right though, the game chat is exceptionally buggy. There are times when a crewmate is randomly muted. I can see the line across the chat icon when they speak, and yet, I don't have them muted. Nothing short of one, or both, of us leaving the game and returning fixes it.

  • @sanni Hmmm, noob question...is my headset considered a USB mic? I have Astro A50s which are wireless, and the base station is connected to my PC via USB.
