Why no female pirate sounds???

  • Both my daughters have their own female pirate and they often wonder why all the sounds they make sound like they are coming from a male pirate. Before you say it's unisex, stop. Clearly it's not. Hope they update this at some point.

The sounds Im referring to are

    • 'Running out of breathe' sound
    • 'gasping for air'
    • I feel I'm missing a few, will update if they come to mind

  • @king-brouille My character has female sounds, at least they sound female to me. Send a ticket to Rare?

  • @king-brouille my girlfriends pirate burps and it straight up sound like a dude hahaha

  • @king-brouille
You’re absolutely right. I don’t play as a female, but I’ve heard the all too familiar male gasp coming from a lady pirate. It’s not game breaking, but it does pull away from the immersive aspect of this game.
Let’s get these ladies the voice they deserve!
And maybe, for all those who play as a lady, but enjoy a masculine voice, an option to change your voice in the vanity chest could be a simple fix.

All the girls I know burp "like a dude"

  • @el-dunco

CAN you burp in a feminine way?

    Make a dainty f**t?

The gasps, heavy wheezing, and vomiting are all universal across characters.

They're definitely more dude throat sounding though.

It's not a bug, just a soundbite attached to all player characters

  • Because of the resistance to allowing women on board, many female pirates did not identify themselves as such. Anne Bonny, for example, dressed and acted as a man while on Captain Calico Jack's ship
Women sometimes became pirates themselves, though they tended to have to disguise themselves as men in order to do so. Pirates did not allow women onto their ships very often. Many women (and men) of the time were unable to perform the physically demanding tasks required of the crew. Additionally, women were often regarded as bad luck among pirates. It was feared that the male members of the crew would argue and fight over the women. On many ships, women (as well as young boys) were prohibited by the ship's contract, which all crew members were required to sign

  • @e11evenbsouth What you say is correct but I dont think that is why Rare has the female pirates sounding like guys. I honestly think it was just laziness on their part.

  • Or the fact that a female gasping for air or running out of breath may sound sexual. Try it for yourself.

    No not laziness, worse... politics.

Same, anyone who thinks that burps and f***s are a male thing has clearly never lived with women.

  • @e11evenbsouth except this is a game that isn't set in historical times but is set in its own piratey world which is much more inclusive than reality. The history lesson is nice, but irrelevant to the actual game.

Having said that though: they should just have a few different voice sets for pirates and let the players choose their own. In real life there are plenty of feminine men and masculine women. Just like they let male pirates wear dresses and female pirates wear pants, just create a few voice sets and let the players decide what their pirate sounds like.

  • Don't know why but this video clip came to mind.... :-)
I would agree though... should be more female voices

lol At least some try to cover it up by a fake sneeze.
    Bless their f-hearts. :o)

  • @King-Brouille
I feel for ya. My wife plays and is always frustrated by this. I'm sure its been mentioned before but needs to be amended.

Truthfully I would like a list of stock voices to pick from, just for grunts and sighs etc.
Anyone remember Sri Sumbhajee, Pirate Lord of the Indian ocean?
Give him a google and you will see what I mean.

@pollyoliverperk Unfortunately there aren't any female sounds as of yet.
It is a shame though. It shouldn't be that hard to fix.

  • ok since no one here seems to understand how the games characters work. in the code of the characters there is no test of if it is male or female. that's why you can throw a dress on a male character. every character shares the same code. and for them to go in and add code to test if the character is female is next to impossible

  • @e11evenbsouth everybody watch out the tough guy is here. See him pose with his airsoft gun. He means business.

  • @orgrum buddy buddy buddy. Not being a tough guy, but let's get real nitpicking over a sound? Airsoft my butt. Real deal man I dont play those kid games.

  • @orgrum http://imgur.com/gallery/EP3Yl5C but that's none of my business

What? So its ok for a man to run out of breath but we can't have a female run out of breath because it may sound sexual? Oh no, god forbid the basement dwelling neckbeards hear the sound of a woman running out of breath on a video game, they may just have to go to the ER for an erection lasting more than 4 hours.

I dont need to try it myself. When I am out of breath after running I sound like I am about to drop dead, not like I am about to take my hair out of my pony tail, fling it around and get it on.

again. how is it that everyone wants to speculate whenever Ive said the answer. the game plays the sound for male and female because the game uses only the one player type. no tests on if its male or female. there is no way to test if the players character is female

Nothing is impossible to code, but the development effort/LoE may be high or low based on how the code is built.

For instance, if different ‘base/core’ models are used to generate male and female characters, they could just assign an attribute with male or female values to the base models. Those flags would be read when triggering player sound effects. They may even have this in place already and just never differentiated the sexes due to time constraints.

This is way off the mark.

There is clear demarcation between male and female pirates already, so yes - the differentiation does already exist in the code. Don't believe me? Strip your male and female models down and tell me one isn't wearing some extra clothing where the other is not.

It would almost be trivial to add a logic gate to play a set of sounds based on the character's sex.

  • @el-Duncan Haha and thats.......a bad thing?

  • @tre-oni I stand corrected. But just now I went in and repeatedly ran my girl out of air, and I can't help it, it still sounds like a girl to me. (belching not so much! :-D but I had assumed all this time it was a joke burp)
Not trying to be smartsassy, or whatever, but do we all have the same version of the game? Whenever I come into my game I am in the noob suit and unequipped, but everyone I've played with, comes in wearing the outfits they left in and equipped as they left. They see their character in the ship load screen, I do not. I'm not arguing with you, I'm just puzzled.

  • @hiblin I agree, not game-breaking, just a 'how/why was this not added to the game?' -type situation. @PollyOliverPerk I did not send a ticket in, phenomenal idea! At least this way I know someone at rare saw it...

  • @kyros-darkbeard
Yep. They can easily mark models and do a model check for the voice, or they could let players decide on what voicepack they use when creating their pirate. Why limit "manly" sounds to male models or "feminine" sounds to female models? Just let the player decide on the voice set to use (like many character creators in games do) and have that saved against the player's profile.

I love when people claim something is "next to impossible" when it comes to code. It never is. Sometimes it takes some work, but a properly designed solution is never anywhere near impossible.
