New PvP Chest Idea: "Reaper's Chest"

  • With the introduction of the Reaper's Mark, I think it would be cool to have another in-game item that plays with visibility on the map. Enter the "Reaper's Chest" (or "Dead Man's Chest"). This item would be a high-value, exceptionally rare chest (only 1 on a server at any given time).

The Repear's Chest is an ornate chest with a skull on its face. When the chest is picked up (NOT dug up), the eyes light up bright red and can be seen from far away (similar to the reaper's mark) and your crew will receive a notification (similar to an Alliance notification, but much more ominous):

"BEWARE: This treasure is cursed. The location of this chest will be known to all."

Once the chest is activated, it CANNOT be deactivated.

All other players on the server will also receive a notification:

    "An ancient evil has awoken..."

The chest's location will be visible at all times (as a Sea of Thieves skull coin on the map) to all players until it is turned in.

Players will be able to use this chest in a lot of different ways to create interesting gameplay scenarios:

    • You can race to the nearest outpost and turn it in
    • You can use it as bait for a trap
    • You can use it to attract other players if you want to engage in PvP
    • You can use it to misdirect players. Load up all the skull fort loot then pick up the reaper's chest at the last second, leave it at the skull fort, and sail away. Other players will come to the fort and leave your ship (with all the treasure) alone.
    • PvE players can simply leave the chest behind if they don't want to mess with other players, or if they're being pursued and they're scared, just throw the chest overboard. Think of it as a get-out-of-jail-free card.
    • The chest could create awesome, multi-ship FFA battles as players fight over it
    • Throw it into the red sea and laugh as other players try and get it
    • Other things I'm sure I haven't thought of

    What do you guys think?

EDIT: Another cool feature for this chest could be a built-in risk/reward mechanic. The longer you hold onto the chest, the more money it is worth. This could be communicated by the eye color of the chest / Skull coin (green, yellow, red). The chest could change eye color every 10 minutes or so and would cap out in value once the eyes turned red (something like green = 1k, yellow = 2k, red = 4k). All players in the game would also receive a notification as the chest value increases:

    "The evil power grows..."

This way, the chest would remain in play longer (for those who choose to use it that way), and create more awesome player stories :)

EDIT 2: A couple more things I think could be cool for this chest...

Because the chest will bring a lot of players in close proximity to each other, it's going to be important to know who has the chest at all times. It should really be visually obvious and light up like a Christmas tree. This would also make it very hard for players to hide the chest on random islands, etc.

Finally, it MIGHT be cool for the chest to have special rules while in an Alliance (it might be better without special rules too, I'm not sure). Nothing complicated, but maybe something like this...

If a crew in your Alliance turns the chest in, you will get the turn-in pop-up on your screen as normal, but ONLY receive 1 gold (the crew that turns in gets full credit), not the normal 50%. This would prevent players from just forming one big alliance whenever someone gets the chest. Also, similar to how the Chest of 1000 Grogs and Chest of Sorrows have audio stingers when turned in, the Chest of Endless Greed (my favorite name at the moment), could have an audio stinger where it lets out an evil cackle. I think getting 1 gold while the chest laughs at you would be a nice touch lol, and educate players how it works while in an Alliance.

  • @gonnableedya that's a cool idea...Rare, do this!

  • super cool idea!!

  • I think this already exists... it’s called the skull fort key. ;)

  • @gonnableedya Great idea, I love it.
That's saying a lot coming from a player who prefers PvE.
Just as long as they don't make it like the skele ships / skull fort where both aren't enabled at the same time. This needs to be on it's own random timer off set to active forts and fleets.

  • @gonnableedya I love this idea. But I am wondering, what would you say if instead of this being an item to find, it is an item you earn. In other words it becomes a treasure that floats to the surface if you sink someone with a reapers mark on. This way you guarantee a reward, with some risk to it, for sinking a ship in PvP. I keep seeing so many posts about how PvP is dead and how the reapers mark didn't change it, though my experiences suggest otherwise, LOL.

But this would be a great way to spice it up.

Either way, your original idea, or a modified version as I have mentioned. I love the idea of having a piece of treasure that the curse shows the location on the map for all to see.

  • @NoFears-Fun

Interesting idea. The problem with that, though, is that you will effectively give players the ability to create treasure chests, and some players will abuse these mechanics to farm each other. Also, what happens if you're in a long, winning battle and a player takes his Reaper flag off at the last second and robs you of all your time and hard work?

I feel like the Reaper's Mark is in a good place right now, and future PvP options can be explored with other tools/items/mechanics that both PvE and PvP players can get excited about! :)

  • @gonnableedya Great feedback. Was just an idea to offer a reward for going after the reapers mark and only because there seems to be a lot of complaining about it. For me, having fun is reward enough. But thought this could be a great idea for those seeking a reward.

As for the farming, that happens now all the time. People buy out servers, or force the take over of servers. And while I feel it cheapens the game, it already happens with what we have now.

  • @GonnaBleedYa This is an epic idea! Well said mate!

  • Couple more things i think would add to an already great idea.

This chest can not be turned in by crews in an alliance, or at the very least only the crew that turns it in gets the reward, or ath the very very least (lol) do an actual split for alliances rather than duplicate like the other chests do.

The timer that increases value should be a curse so that there is a window for max profit for sale but if the curse goes without being fed the souls of other pirates for a certain time once the chest is at full value, it would open up and a ghost boss or skeleton captain would pop out

  • @gonnableedya

I like the idea as long as it rewards the crew to keep the chest on their ship and defend it.

I think it's really easy to sail to an outpost straight away to sell it, so a ship on the other side of the map won't have enough time to steal it when they'll get the notification.

But, I have a question. If I succeed to sell my chest, can someone discover another chest after?

  • @gonnableedya This is the sort of stuff that could get you a job. Ive read lots of ideas on these feedback forums and ive written some of my own too. But this is by far the out and out best idea i have seen written on here. There is so much potential for this and it would be a pirating crime for Rare not to go ahead with it. Build this edition exactly as you say as it needs no tweeks or extras. Its so good an idea that it seems like it should already be part of the game. Now all we need is to get Rare's attention on the matter. Or atleast get Captain Falcore to make a video about it.

  • Great idea just make sure it doesn't turn into another hide the fort key situation

  • @IceMan-0007

Yeah, definitely. I think it should despawn if not turned in within an hour or two, to prevent players from trolling / putting it in some crazy location. All players could receive a notification when it despawns / is turned in.

"The curse has been lifted from the seas..."

  • @bran-the-ent sagte in New PvP Chest Idea: "Reaper's Chest":

No...you don't see the key on the map

  • @gonnableedya Awesome idea! I think this would be a great addition to the game. I'm not sure about calling it the Reaper's Chest (since we already have the Reaper's Mark). I like the name "Dead Man's Chest" but that could be a hassle with Disney.

    Some other name ideas:

    Harbinger Chest
    Dire Chest
    Chest of Contention
    Chest of Strife

    ...etc.

  • Nice idea matey!

  • YESSS!!!!

  • @Genuine-Heather

    All cool names! :)

    Some other name ideas:

"Ferryman's Chest" or "Chest of the Damned?" Those imply danger, right lol?

    "Chest of Greed / Avarice"

  • Very well thought out by the OP. I like the idea!

  • This is a great idea mate, well thought out post here!
We definitely need more Cursed Chests in the game as well, and this idea is a good start.

  • @schwammlgott And, yet... people gravitate toward it anyway. And with drive-bys, this would be pointless.

  • Gigantic thumbs up!!! Love the concept!

An icon representing the cursed chest could appear in the top right of screen for everyone else on the server. Even if it's just a skull icon.
The eyes on this icon could change colour as the eyes on the chest changes.

  • @admiral-rrrsole Wait... now we are talking about more HUD icons? Why don’t we just turn the game into a side scroller and be done with it?

  • First I get a flag now I will get a chest.. I am all for more things in the game for me lol

  • @bran-the-ent I hardly think an icon of a skull in the top right corner of screen will effect anything. It was just an alternative to another pop-up notification suggested by the op.

  • Great idea! It would create much more interactions stories, high stakes make for more excitement.

  • Players will get the chest go straight to the outpost and hand it in. Unless you happen to be really close there is no way you will be able to reach them in time. It also means you have to stop what you are doing and go chase them... a lot of players wont do that for such a small chance of making it in time.

I think they will need to slow down your ship or something if they were to do this so that other ships on the server have time to reach you.

  • I don't care how much the chest is worth; it's not worth the trouble it would bring down upon me - woe onto the one who digs it up, I say! I'll cut my losses and dump it into the sea the 1st chance I get, and good riddance too! Watch it sink to ol' Davy himself - he can keep it for all I care.

  • A few negative comments that i cant seem to get my head around. If this wouldnt be worth your time, dont do it. Its the same as skull forts. We all see them, but we dont always go to them. And the skull ships. To bring the nay sayers on board, pick up the "chest of the damned" (best name so far) and you will automatically earn 500 coins (not really worth it. Hold it for 20 minutes to earn 1500 coins, 40 minutes gets 3000, and 1 hour max's it out at 5000 coins. You can still complete voyages, you can still do skull forts, all you gotta do is avoid other pirates and the megalodon for an hour and it'll be well worth it. How can anyone not like the concept of this guys idea.

  • Yess! That would be so cool!

  • I think the idea of the chest is fine without any unnecessary hand-holding through the game interface. Adding pop up messages or an icon to the screen would feel disruptive to me. Instead, perhaps the cursed chest might produce a bright ghostly aura that could be visible from a distance. Nothing quite so large and obvious as the skull or ship clouds, but a distinct glow that could be spotted from far away. The glow could intensify as the value of the chest increases. Sea of Thieves has proven that players don't need to be led by the hand. No pop-ups, messaging, or icons are required. When someone spots that eerily glowing ship, they'll know what to do. Let nature take its course. :)

  • @gonnableedya This is a brilliant idea! I love it and I want it!
Just for balancing I would increase the time to gain chest value from 10 minutes to 15 minutes at least. It usually takes 10 minutes and more to get the ship to the closest outpost and even longer until enemy ships are finally attacking.

@Genuine-Heather I completely agree with your post above!

Also @gonnableedya, you inspired me. How about the following?

    • A similar chest that attracts skeleton ships or the Megalodon (or both) on your way to turn it in.
    • A gold hoarders mission that can be bought or found and by activation sets the Reaper's Coin (as you lovely described it above) on the map. This would grant more treasure than usual missions and on completion you get also a Reaper's Chest, so the Reaper's Coin will still be up after the voyage.

It's not that I don't like the idea - I actually think it's a very good one. I just hate the idea of digging up a bunch of loot on a Gold Hoarder voyage, for example, only to have this one appear as I dig it up - it would jeopardize the rest of my loot, and automatically prevents me from getting another "safer" chest out of the voyage, despite potentially being worth more. Mark my words, if this is implemented, most people would probably just dump it into the sea because the ends do not justify the means - or the rest of their treasure. That said, for those of you who do want to hold onto it, I do think it would be an exciting and harrowing experience if you survive and are able to turn it in.
