The Whale. New Enemy on the Sea.

  • You're sailing along in your sloop with your first mate. He's up in the Crow's Nest, watching for ships in the distance. He suddenly shouts "Thar she blows!" and hops down from aloft!

You think to yourself, "That's a whale. Should we go after it, or run away?" Then something huge slams into your ship! Holes pop and water starts gushing into the hold! You've just been rammed by the whale as you were thinking! The fight is on! The Whale circles the boat, much like the Meg, and charges in, ramming the boat with his large flat head, or sometimes diving under and whacking the hull with his huge fluke. You and your first mate get some cannon shots off, fire some small arms at him. Your First Mate goes below deck and grabs a HARPOON and flings it at the beast. The metal burries itself into the Leviathan's tough hide and the wooden handle sticks out. The Whale charges the boat again, and this time leaps up into the air, and crashes down next to it. The Sloop spins and jostles in the foamy waves as the beast dives deep into the water. The fight rages on!

My idea, as described above, is to have a large roaming Whale(s) on the map! Unlike the Meg or the Kraken, the Whale would remain on the map and within sight of anyone who sails near him, occasionally spouting to signify his presence. There could even be more than one Whale at various points on the map.

The Whale would fight similar to the Meg, but be a bit slower and stronger. He could attack with a ram and a fluke slap. He could spray water and breech the surface near the boat as well, creating waves to push boats in different directions.

I feel like a giant whale enemy on the sea would add a cool element. People could use new HARPOONS to deal extra damage to the giant beast. I'm sure Rare could find other ways to make the fight even more engaging and different from the Meg fights.

The Whale could also be called The Leviathan!

What do my other Pirates think? Would you guys like to see a big whale boss to fight out there on the seas?

  • Rare won't implement a long-hunted and at-risk species when they already have a dangerous, fictional one that essentially serves the same purpose (shrouded ghost is effectively their rendition of the great white whale). So, in essence, what you're asking for is already there.

  • I'm against the killing of whales for sport or profit. Same with dolphins and manatees.

    Find another villian.

  • @galactic-geek But its just a game!
and killing innocent people is great? not every player is a pirate some of them do merchant and other stuff what im trying to say that its hypocrite to say that its cruel to kill whales in video games.
We do horrible things in video games but it dosent mean anything and for modern days yes it is cruel but back in those days hunting was essential to survive so i dont get that green peace talk over a video game......

  • Yeah, this is just a game, and the "Leviathan" Whale isn't a real whale. There's no reason not to have it. Variety is the Spice of Life.

The Megalodons are similar, but they are not the same. First, they are RNG. They just spawn on you. The Whale would not be RNG, and you could actively hunt it by looking for its spouts. It also attacks differently, so you'd need different tactics to kill it.

Besides, you're playing a PIRATE GAME. Pirates, by their very definition, are criminals. You kill people and steal their loot. You desecrate the dead. You drink grog and puke in buckets here.

Yet killing fictional monster whales is to much /shrug.

  • seems kinda odd if you can kill sharks in game though...

  • @capn-seli people are so hypocrite but its nothing new.
I support your idea it sounds awesome and just to annoy those snowflakes i will personally will hunt them for pleasure just to remind them that its just a GAME!

  • Whales could be fun and even dont need to be killed.

Could have it where whale is a floating around with treasure in its belly from being a bottom feeder. Eating all the sunken loot

Teams would have to use cursed cannon balls to get treasure.

Puke ball- whale pukes up loot.
Grog ball-Whale gets drunk and happy so you have to enter mouth when he laughs in a drunken state.
Sleep ball-He sleeps and you have to enter mouth before he wakes and steal his belly loot.

would be fun trying to shoot teammates into his mouth to snag loot before curses fade.

  • I know Japan would love this idea! ;)

  • Don't get me wrong. Whales are my favorite animal in Real Life, and I don't condone REAL LIFE killing of whales, but lets be real. This is a game. If we have a giant Whale-Monster is it the same as harpooning a magnificent Blue Whale IRL?

Not at all. Do you consider the Kraken to be a Giant Squid? Or the Megalodon to be a Great White? Just because something is based off a Real Life animal doesn't make it an equivalent.

But in all seriousness, I'd love to see some Whales (even just passive ambient ones) enter the sea of thieves. I just thought it'd be cool to have another enemy variant for us to engage in and get treasure from!

  • @Barnabas-Seadog
What's your take on the shark killing in the game? Not trying to do a gotcha moment, just curious. Their is a documentary on a certain dish called "Shark Fin Soup." Puts into perspective the monstrous acts performed on sharks.

Never put much thought into it honestly. Little digital sharks never really lived so are we really killing them? Its a game and in games I have killed many things I would never kill in real life.

My idea was to use the whales like a giant roving living fort. Where you would have to get it drunk, sleepy ect. So we could go/shoot teammates into its mouth to grab loot and escape.

  • @barnacle-blake
My bad I @ the wrong individual.

However, I'd recommend "Gordon Ramsey's Shark Bait." Its on youtube free, discusses the industry and why Gordon has stopped serving this particular dish.

  • @capn-seli yes I would like to see a whale on the sea of thieves

  • I dunno if those above are trolling.

The game supports shooting and killing.

The game supports stealing and to certain degrees voice/chat/death-threats(etc).

    The game supports killing sharks.

It's a video game. So any moral standing on this idea shouldn't be added because it doesn't fit the narrative for the rest of the now-controversial ideas (if you took that moral stance). And whaling in a video game isn't a new idea. Whaling in books and literary art isn't new either.

  • I just replied to a similar thread. Here are my thoughts I shared there:

There are several reasons that whaling will not come to the Sea of Thieves. Foremost is the belief by most that the practice in general is no longer acceptable as a commercialized practice. Whales have become greatly endangered. We also have threats in the sea such as the Megs that suffice for such gameplay. We could add harpoons to hunt them. There could also be larger, bigger monsters added at some point, even if it is just for a limited event.

It would be better to have whales as part of the environment. The sea is in need of having more life. It would be better to see a whale surface or jump near you ship occasionally. To have a chance to swim near them when we explore shipwrecks. Same would be nice to have dolphins. It would bring much more to the game by having their beauty to enjoy than killing them.

We could add harpoons for monster hunting such as the Megs:

Fishing, Crabbing, Clams, and Harpoon Monster Hunting

I love the sharks in the game. I like how they look as wonky as the pirates.

But a whale is a passive, benign animal undeserving of death for no reason. Like a huge ancient sea turtle.

Perhaps if Rare made a whale that had an angry cartoon face and sported an unusually aggresive personality. But that wouldn't really be a whale, eh.

So why not some other fictional villian, like a giant sea serpent, or a seawolf.

  • @barnabas-seadog
Not arguing but merely discussing, but isn't that kinda saying sharks are not eligible to be "undeserving of killing?" I mean sure, they attack the player. However, if say a killer whale, known to eat seals and such, were to attack the player. Couldn't they be replaced as the sharks or added in addition to the sharks.

I just find it interesting on the stance. Whales are a no-no, but sharks seem fine. Don't mistake me whaling IRL needs to go, but at the end of it this is just a game. When in reality sharks aren't much villains either.

  • Ok, maybe not a beluga or a sperm whale, but perhaps a Killer Whale.
It has a natural look and proportions of a villian.

    /raise tankard

  • I can see both sides of the ethical debate. While this IS just a game, some things feel wrong even in a video game setting. I don't know why, but they just do.

I like the idea of an obviously menacing looking, dire-whale with wicked armored ridges, three times the size of the meg. Old harpoons and swords sticking from his hide, puckered bullet holes aplenty. Evil looking for sure, with all the special attacks mentioned by the OP.

Now we add lore on how an ancient captain hunted whales his entire life. How he hunted one giant Leviathon in particular (Moby anyone?). Only to find when he eventually hunted it down and killed it that he was cursed to take it's place, forever roaming the seas and bringing wreck and ruin to sailors.

The Leviathon is un-killable, but you can hurt it bad enough that it spits up the treasure it's swallowed, before disappearing into the depths. Probably by scoring a cannon or gunpowder barrel down its gullet.

I also fully agree that regular whales and dolphins should be in the game too, but not to kill. Shooting at them should just scare them away, and having dolphins near your ship should scare away the sharks.

  • @captain-arcanic how about just Moby D*** and if they add a leviathan it be a water dragon like the hydra or something like that. Harpoon I agree 100% and should be used in all situations meg, kraken, Moby D***, attached to another ship to bring them broadside.

  • @chiefjdub The white whale himself is too spot on for SoT. Making it a big, angry dire whale and tying it into the SoT lore seems way more fitting to me, but all that's just window dressing anyway.
Using a harpoon to haul in ships opens a whole nother can of worms. We can't pretend that won't drastically change ship combat forever.

  • @capn-seli

    Love it!

They could add a boss mechanic unique to it that if you're on deck it may do not only a charge of the ship to puncture the hull, but a tail splash that does two things.

First it adds 25% water to the ships bilge, and any one on deck is washed overboard.

This makes you think a bit; it's an encounter that anyone can defeat of played well, and adds variety.

  • cool idea, maybe we could have this as something to mix it up a bit. always seeing megs in the water can get a bit tiresome.

  • @barnabas-seadog ahhh sorry mate but not all whales are passive. Quite a few species are incredibly aggressive and brutalize each other/other species, namely sperm whales, hump-backs, and orchas.

  • I like this idea. Even if we couldn't get a whale because other "pirates" are too sensitive about what they do in a video game, just simply having a new sea creature that is tougher than a meg would be awesome. No offense Rare, but the meg is weak sauce once you've figured out basic strategy against it, there needs to be something more dangerous.

Oooh yeah! The spout attack could add some water (without holes) and wash people overboard! That would be an awesome mechanic to try and fight against!

  • @captain-arcanic 👍 I'm ready for it

  • @capn-seli I don't think whales should be added, but the harpoon idea sounds good, maybe you could harpoon sharks, bring the aboard your ship and then sell them to the merchants (or a new fishing faction)
Also I think the Leviathan would be too similar to the Meg

  • @tinballoon24929 omg this is exactly what need to be done!

  • @tinballoon24929

Agree whales are friendly lets harpoon those sharks plus they already are harpooned so its ok :")

  • People seem to forget that whales are predators as well. Sperm whales rip apart colossal squid. Blue whales eat millions of krill. Killer whales (while not actually whales) kill sharks, whales, seals, and are known to toy with their food. They are just as benign or just as "violent" as sharks can be, but because they don't have serrated teeth or don't look as scary or don't have 20 Jaws-like films portraying them as evil monsters they're apparently more innocent than sharks?

Before somebody says "sharks bad because sharks eat people," shark attacks tend to happen in murky waters where the shark has trouble seeing and mistakes a human for a seal. Only about 5 people are killed annually due to shark attacks, while cows and horses kill about 20 people each per year.

It's a bit asinine to say sharks bad whales good when both are predatory animals that hunt to survive in their food chain, so if the game condones the killing of sharks (many of which are also endangered irl to hunting) then there is no reason not to add whales.

If they really are so opposed to the killing of whales they don't even have to add hunting interactions to them. There's plenty of other creative ways to include whales like making them spout treasure or maybe they have it stuck to their sides like barnacles. For a game that spends so much time on the ocean I personally would like to see more of an ocean ecosystem going on.

Dont try to be a lunatic who cannot differentiate between a videogame and reality.
You are virtually killing actual other Human players in this game.
Are you endorsing murder and "real" piracy cause of it?

    Get a grip.
Or are you one of this eternal outrage-culture Twitter users?

  • They could make it a magic whale with four glowing eyes and horns so that people wont get offended. Saying not to add whales boss because its cruel isn't a good point because you can already kill sharks and pigs so why not whales.
