Voice Chat in xbox and PC

  • My kids and I love playing this game, so thank you for this. However, when I want to take a break and they still want to continue play. I don't want them reading random text other than just the Wheel chat options or allowing a random stranger to talk to them in-game. I understand friendship in-game can and does happen, however, as a parent I am concerned from what my kids might be exposed too in live chats. I understand I can just party chat to a profile in xbox live, just hoping for an easy option.

Is there a way to disable live chat and random text other than in-game text from the game? Like can this be single player Sloop option or parental option in game for accounts?

    Thank you for reading.

  • @drevilstwin yes to this. My kids want to play when I can't and the seas can be filthy.

  • There are a number of options available for you to control what your children are exposed to. Here is a good place to start:

  • @ghostpaw So lock him out from playing the game. This isn't what I was requesting.

  • @drbullhammer I agree. @D-Jaguar

That isn’t what I was suggesting. If you poke around the link I provided as a starting point you will find there are a lot of options. If it were my child, I would start by changing the account privacy and online safety option to child defaults so that only people on the friends list can communicate. There is also a communication & multiplayer submenu that lets you be specific about what communication is allowed. Way more options than just locking them out of the game.

  • @ghostpaw we had this on when the game dropped, it ended up causing other issues in communication. It is a good suggestion, but for us it didnt work as we liked.

That would be frustrating. What were the other issues it created?

  • @drbullhammer I have never found it, but it is easy to mute our own crews. I have not been able to find an easy method to mute others. I found it best just to push them off the game and on to others with more controls on the communication. Sad we can't sail together, but there will always be other games.

  • @ghostpaw Yes, this works for Xbox live and nothing to stop people from talking to him in the game through SoT. SoT has its own features speech used inside SoT, outside of the xbox live features.

  • @d-jaguar Thanks, yes I understand I can mute one by one.
I don't want to be over there shoulder while they're playing just to mute the "bad apples".

    Thanks

  • My trick that works on both Xbox and pc is to connect the headset and not put it on. Honestly, that’s what I do when I’m on a toxic server. Works on other games too 👍

  • @ghostpaw it was last March, but one of the issues it caused was invites would not pop up on the xbox always the laptop, so they could never join an xbox party from the xbox. No one not even friends would receive the xbox party or game invite from the xbox. It worked just fine from the laptops though.
The solution was to just play on the laptops. More of a hassle on their mother as they had to set up before playing.

Also, it didnt stop others in game from text chat, but it did disable the xbox messages. At that time the seas weren't as bad in game. Most players played in party chat so we didnt have to worry about the voice and text chats. They, at times, did send messages through xbox to call you noob and other names. I just laughed it off and never shared the messages with the kids. As communication became key to the game especially after the hungering deep, that is when it turned sour.

Overall the game is not that bad. Everyone you meet are not out to speak poorly to kids. There are alot good players out there. But as my wife tells me "it is easy to lose innocence, so why are we so fast to let it go?"
For now, they play other games. Minecraft dungeons comes out this year. They'll be content.

  • @wyvernhavvk I like that idea. Its a work around. It's putting trust in my kids not to listen or get caught putting there hands in the "cookie jar", so to speak.

I just like it to be a feature in-game for me and my kids.

  • @drevilstwin there are a number of options under the 'My Crew' menu in-game to do with communications from other crews.

There are also options to mute members of your own crew individually, should the need arise.

  • @triheadedmonkey This is what I needed. Thank you.

  • I had assumed based on the wording that the in game menu worked only to control communication from other crews. Good to know!
