Share your best PvP tips for beginners here!

  • Hi everyone! If you've seen my posts on this forum, you probably know I have some issues with PvP. Basically, I don't like it. I'm not good at it either. I'm always afraid of other ships. Me and my crew try to flee so often, we've named our ship The Jolly Dodger.

Yesterday me and my crew were followed by a galleon and they kept following and killing us, wherever we went. I felt so helpless. So please, share your best PvP tips here. Especially ship combat! We play with sloops, brigantines and galleons so every bit of advice if welcome.

We'll always be jolly dodgers, but it would be nice to know what to do when a fight becomes inevitable. Thanks mateys!

  • PvP tips do you mean person on person or ship vs ship. Cuz with a sloop if with 2 player you can out run/sail a galleon. Brigs no. Best to fight is put your sail halve way and circle around and aim lower deck. Person vs person is a practice also sensitivity is key. More so you can alway invite me to teach a bit i solo a lot I know the struggle

  • @venm-feng-shui all PvP tips are welcome, but I'm mostly curious about ship vs ship tips :)

  • @princes-lettuce well the basic problem of ship combat is that on any ship type, if the entire crew is bailing/repairing, then they can probably save the ship. So to actually sink someone, you have to put holes in their ship, and then also find a way to distract them from fixing everything up. Thus why it's become the go-to tactic to have one crew member go board the enemy vessel and try to keep a firefight going on their lower deck so as to prevent repairs. Kegs are also good, since they simultaneously put holes in the boat and kill players (definitely the best way to keep them from repairing).

Against galleons, put holes in their upper deck (so that they won't bother repairing), then hit them with a ballastball.

  • @vorondil1 Exactly, I always feel like firing cannonballs doesn't make much of a difference unless we board them. But I suck at PvP fights... Any tips there?

  • @princes-lettuce Honestly you only get better at that by practicing. I'm still not great, so I'm not the best at sharing tips. I would watch a few videos of good streamers/players just to get an idea of the general tactics and flow (I watched zylbrad and both enjoyed and learned). Then honestly just dedicate an evening to practicing PVP. Accept you won't get any treasure, and try to either find a friendly person that will practice, or if you have to, find an unfriendly person who will spawn-camp you and inadvertently give you practice.

  • The biggest tips I can give is more about avoiding and intimidating rather then to be good at it.

To be good at PvP is mostly practise. Find your spot in the crew and excell at that.

Tips for people who feel PvP is overwhelming:

    • Play with friends: try getting into a group, 4 people on a galleon are a lot less likely to get attacked then a solo slooper.
    • Look like you're serious: Try making a sport of parking your ship as good as you can, raise sails don't drop anchor, don't have your bow pointed at the island you're parked at preventing you from escaping or giving boarders an easy sink by ramming your ship into land.
    • Look the part: As quickly as you can try to save for a few cosmetics for the ship. I'm serious about this, people are less likely to attack a ship with cosmetics then they are going to attack someone with blank hull and sails
    • Prep: Get cannonballs, cursed cannonballs, gunpoweder barrels, a rowboat etc. Make sure you're prepared for a fight even if you don't want it.
    • Play to your strenghts, if your group has no-one who's good at personal PvP, make sure you don't get boarders. If you're bad at sailing turtle and let them come to you. If you're bad at any type of combat but a sailing god, outrun them and make them run into obstacles.

Those are some pointers I can give new players.

  • @hynieth We definitely look the part. We have a gorgeous customised ship, wear awesome outfits, and I'm really good at sails-parking if I may brag a little.

Still, people always bother us, and then it becomes clear that we don't know what we're doing. We just look cool, and know how to park. :p

  • @princes-lettuce Imagine if you didn't look cool ;-)

I'm not saying it's a 100% prevention but it's a way to avoid some of it.

  • Make them follow they cant board and shoot then. You can disrupt them by boarding and dropping their anchor, blow up powderkegs under, in front or in their boat. Board with two players on both sides is nice a third player can blow up a powderkeg under the boat and the two boarders can disrupt repairs.

Often they give up the chase if they get boarded and attacked the whole time and they can only defend when following :")

Each time you board them try to grab some of their supplies until they run out. Dont need to fight just grab supplies and drop the anchor :")

When they are disrupted you can turn the boat to shoot ccb and a couple of holes sometimes whithout them getting in a position to fire back.

Go around island and leave players to man island guns to ambush them :")

Go around outpost island and let the crew jump off to cash in loot drive by style.

Its fun if they chase! Then you can take your time and practise boarding them by just jumping in the water while their boat is coming full speed just need to grab the ladder or blow up a keg close

  • Practice, practice, practice! Keep sailing and practicing all the tips above. Also finding a great crew to regularly sail with will provide team synergy which goes above and beyond in your ship staying afloat and the other sinking.

  • @x-crowheart-x

Can ya sail today? :D its no fun lonely out there no one talking :P

  • My tips include:

    1. Guard your ladders, ship sinking meta right now is disrupting ship repairs and bailing. If they can't repair they sink like stones. Same rules apply to you, never let them on your ship. Watch for the signs of a boarder. Some include if your chasing directly behind a ship, cannonfire with no cannonball, and simply being adjacent to another ship. Listen for swim sounds.

    2. Stock your ship, by learning to properly stock your ship, you can be a little bit more generous with cannon fire. Shoot to islands empty and mermaid back with supplies. Same for floating barrels just mermaid back when full. Also drain the starting outpost.

    3. When fighting lift your sails up or run less sails. Your ship becomes much more maneuverable and this allows you to place more cannon shots on a ship for a pass.

    4. Drop their anchor, a stationary ship is a dead ship. Not only can they not run or disengage, but they have a limited field of fire to counter attack. They can't rotate cannons. Ship is also easier to board.

    5. Blunderbuss is garbage, even after the patch this weapon remains poor. Pistol, Rifle, and sword are higher tiered in my opinion. Sure the blunderbuss has some niche moments, but the other weapons are much more reliable.

    6. Never anchor your own ship, learn to lift sails and stop. When you are anchored you cannot rotate cannons to defend yourself. Also if you need to flee quickly having to lift the anchor as well will slow you down.

  • @ruigtand-nl

Yes should be able to. Help you get the beacons. We all need to hunt the Shrouded Ghost. Plus, use all these tips to help other crews and ships practice sinking. :)

We tried the Division 2 beta last night. Turned out to bad PC port in its current state.

  • @x-crowheart-x
Ill start in a bit then gather some supplies in ze brig :D

  • @princes-lettuce

As an avid suicide bomber I like to try and hit them with a barrel or at least possibly board and blow myself up and hopefully take a few of them with me at the same time.

Sails, Sails, Sails, always keep your sails in the wind no matter what.

First things first stock up at the outpost or go to the nearest fort for boom barrels and if you get luck cursed cannon balls.

Use regular cannon balls for a "tracer" shot meaning use it to gauge the arc of your shot and distance. Then think about where the ship is and where it will be in 5 seconds to time your shots.

Cursed cannon balls are great but only if you can make the shots count. Use a combo of them to get maximum effect.

  • @x-crowheart-x @Ruigtand-NL count me in if you have room. I will be home around 5pm my time.

Sure we can start a galleon then. Wolfstryder will be home around the same time.

  • @princes-lettuce Ok, just a couple of minor tips, not sure if anyone covered these.

Hoard your CCB's (cursed cannon balls). Don't store them. Make sure your best cannon person has at least one of everything you find.

If I am facing a galleon, I will hit them several times, then hit them with a ballast ball. Generally, most don't fix their second level holes, and even if they do, those first shots should give you both first and second level holes.

If at all possible, anchor ball them. Then move into position so you are either fore or aft of them so they can't hit you with cannon fire. And fire away. Do NOT hesitate to try and hit them top deck, you occasionally can kill some pirates this way, taking them away from repairs or lifting their anchor.

As some have posted, stock your boat. Make sure you have at least 100 cannonballs on board at all times. They go quick in a prolonged ship to ship battle. Especially against a galleon with a decent crew.

  • Yep, I'm the same way. I get a few items and I'm to an outpost before you can say Captain Hook. People in the game are going to turn me into a bad pirate. As much as I want to be a friendly one & help others. Today, I had another ship join alliance with me. I was like, ok this will be cool. I was on my way to the outpost....as I get to port, they start attacking me. Thankfully I only had 1 chest. Got off my ship quick as I could and turned it in. It's bs like that, that ruins the game for the rest of us who'd like to work together. Anyway, good luck on your future voyages

After the changes to combat that dropped on Tuesday, we are all beginners.

  • My advice.

    1. Always supply well planks are just as important as cannon balls
    2. Always check for other ships every few minutes. This is as important as 1 but is the 2nd most important
    3. Bigger boats with inexperienced people can be interesting. If highly recommended assigning jobs so when battle happens no-one panics
    4. Don't spam cannon shots watch and see where u got before adjusting for next shot and if your shooting a gallon of its not below waterline ur wasting shots.
    5. If you have powderkegs and you feel as though things are going south shot your crows nest of you keep them up their so they aren't used against you
    6. Keep cursed cannon balls in your pocket not in barrel
    7. Alliances can be tricky use ur judgement if you see someone doing something off especially at a fort don't trust them
  • Thanks for all the great advice!
