Call the mermaid!

  • Hello!
During discreet boarding, the mermaid announces us too easily. In my opinion, it would be more interesting if we could call it ourselves, when we are far enough away from our ship.
Of course, it will be more difficult to anticipate the arrival of a player in case of attack, but I think it could be interressing.
    What do you think?

  • The Dev team has addressed this in a few of the streams. The mermaids do this as part of their lore. They were once sailors who were lost at sea and are transforming into mermaids and worse. They rescue sailors they find at sea to keep them from suffering the same fate.

They are not your personal slave who arrive when you ring a bell. This is not a ninja game, and you can (I think) prevent the mermaid from popping by not touching water or land when away from your boat. Either get close and board from your ship, or use a rowboat.

incorrect, when you are a certain distance from your ship the mermaid spawns

  • @rusty-xbone I wasn't 100% certain that it was true, only mentioned that I thought it was as I have heard this countless times and witnessed players hidden away without a mermaid present.

In either case, a player shouldn't expect too much in regards to sneaking around. The mermaids are there to help players return to their ship as well as indicate the presence of an enemy to prevent an excess of camping.

  • @archangel-timmy Indeed, the story is very relevant.
    Thank you for your answer.

  • No to disregard your concerns, as I do feel some changes could be made to help with your ability to sneak around.

If what I said above regarding not touching water/land ends up not being true, as it is hearsay, I think that would for sure be a good addition to test out at least.

In addition to that, right now your nameplate disappears from players above the water while you are below the surface. I will concede that the nameplate could also be hidden while on the ladder, as it is quite noticeable at night when attempting to board.

  • Sailors calling for mermaids to save them can still fit with the game lore. I think calling for a mermaid should be implemented. It's annoying to get knocked off your ship and sometimes wait a minute 30 for your mermaid when your ship is getting clobbered. Getting knocked off your ship can be more punishing than death!
I must also admit that I trolled players in the past by hijacking their ship and sailing in a circle at an island with sails at half-mast and cannoned myself into the distance as they cashed their ship perpetually out of reach.

  • @erynaryalvg there tons of topics about this and the reasons it shouldn't happen.

It provides defense options against boarders and island campers. It does not limit the ability to sneak just makes it more challenging.

We could talk about where it spawns, but the ability to call it on demand is not a good idea. It provides the aggressor with the benefit instead of the defender, which is why I believe it is better this way.

P.S. I love sneaking on board and having a look what people are up to.

The merfolk cannot hear and cannot understand english. They will not be called by anyone or anything short of an enchanted artifact (and there aren't enough of those for everyone).

  • Working as intended. The Mermaid is very helpful for determining if you and your crew still need to be on your guard. If they were always at your beck-and-call, that'd really mess up the lore and the current intended PvP interaction.

Yes they can hear. They've been approached and communicated with with pirates in the SoT book. I see calling on mermaids to be more balanced for PvP than having the game decide who gets a mermaid and who gets sunk while stranded.

  • @boomtownboss

They need some work to be more consistent, yes, but the people who talk to them in the books have had those enchanted artifacts which allow them to communicate with them. One of the main things with the Curse of the Drowned is that they lose their above water hearing and speech.
