Some thoughts about Community, Toxicity and SoT vs. SoF

  • I recently thought over the threads were we argue and discuss a lot about Sea of Thieves or Friends and what different approach we all have playing the game.
I also argued hard here and there and allways defend my points made as a more casual for fun player versus hardcore and pro-gaming.
What i realy read often is this is Sparta eh no, you know Sea of Thieves and not Sea of Friends!
First of all, although i am a casual carebear singleparent father i do and i love to PvP as long as it is fun and not toxic.
And it only becomes toxic if people start calling you a m...f... and stuff like this or start crying you son of a ... i'm fiendly.
Yeah man i'm friendly too and we told you not to come closer and that we don't want an alliance at that fort now :)
And if people say they are fiendly but start to call me, well...
I'm an adult i mostly can laugh about others who get upset for nothing. But honestly those who cannot deal with a loss are party p*****s regarding playing games!
And that is also true for people who strive too seriously for success and need to win that it takes away the fluffy fun approach when we talk about "playing games".
There is nothing more annoying than gamers who scream all day and rant about others, claiming they're all cheaters and censored and insult them and rage too much about winning or loosing and cannot enjoy playing.

To me PvP for itself is not toxic.
The game is also about PvP, but some miss it's also not only about PvP.
The Arena Mode will only about PvP and the Adventure mode is about Adventures based on the freedom that everybody can approach the game like he wants to create that adventure. You login and the adventure begins and becomes what you make of it and what the environment and other players bring to it. You have a plan and the game and other players can help or sabotage you and thats what makes the adventure. Your plan or you beeing lazy awaiting what comes next and the thinds that happen by the way.
PvE or PvP focussed, in a Galleon or in a Rowboat, grinding or just hanging around. Working torwards commendations, events achievements or to climb the ladder to Pirate Legend and Athena 10 or experiment with how many powder kegs do you need to build a pyramid of kegs what can bee seen from the neighbour island.
Damn, now i have created myself a bloddy task :D
Side Note: This was a spontaneous idea while writing, if i think of streamers or videos about the game in general i want to ask Rare to implement more gamechanics to do nonsense in the game like the above mentioned pyramid to play with the environment!
If there's a streamer doing fun stuff like this, tell me, i maybe give it a shot. Another would be a heavy roleplaying streamer with a decent voice and pirate stories to create and tell. Ok back to topic, sorry if i derrailed myself :)

So what i want to say is we have for sure toxic players, but there is plenty of friendly PvPers like us.
Although we arent PvPers, we are SoT "Adventurers" and we are ok with PvP along PvE and sometimes also argue that the other ship looks agressive. They look agressive or, that ustifies we attack first, because attacking is the best way of defending, isnt it and they really looked agressive XD

    Points are:

    1. never take it personal if you get sunk, but there was no rude speech or derogatory language.
    2. its a game to play for fun, loosing is maybe not that much fun than winning, but you are responsible to yourself and all others to not exagerate about loosing and gaming in general and stay polite and at best have fun even if you loose.
    3. To be friendly even when competing and aproach it with a smile on your face is nothing that makes you look weak or not taking it seriuos about to win that battle.
Imho it makes you look a more strong, educated and friendly player i want to play with, even if you sunk me and got all my loot.
    4. Dont play if you arent in the mood and ready to loose.
    5. Don't "own" others if you are the better player and win, stay polite. Be a nice player while a cruelsome pirate.

    ...and that leads me to:

Sea of Thieves and Sea of Friends is in no way a contradiction.
In fact it is a complementation if we think about playing games.

You also fought friend in the past is guess. You fought them in real life, in sports, in video games and whatever.
And i hope you did it never with grim, but a smile on your face.
See what i want to say is competetive play is still playing.

To me it's about a friends match!
That doesnt imply i dont want to win or take it less serious, but i of course dont take it that serious as if i would compete for my life or something really important to me.
But this is and should be just a game you play to have fun with friends. And i approach all who are on my server as likeminded players who want to play for fun and be friendly.
What does not mean i dont attack them, because the game is a PvPvE Game!

I dislike the players who argue with this is not Sea of Friends.
This is not about beeing nice, it's a pirate game blabla.

    Yea it's a pirate game!
A game meant to be played with friends and others who you allways should approach as likeminded "friends" what play the same game as you!!!

I dont want you to have a serious friend relationship, but i want you to remind that even competitors can be friends or approach each other friendly and with respect.

I do not report all players who call me out, but i will report more in the future, because the most damage to the game is not weapon fixes, barrels 2.0 or wahtever.
The most damaging is people complaining because they exagerate about playing games and take it too serious, too personal, are too much into it and make it a job, a life or whatever.
There is a thin line between beeing dedicated, passionate and beeing obsessed and addicted.

To me this is Sea of friendly Thieves!
Or at least it should be...

    have fun playing !!!

I agree that PVP is half the game and it's only toxic when people name call etc. One time me and a friend got into a big PVP fight (We picked the fight) against a brig (sloop vs brig). At first they where salty at us, but when I would get on the SOTD with one of them I would use a cheery voice and say things "This is a lot of fun!" In the end they did have fun, turned a negative experience for them into a positive one and good games all around when it ended.

exactly this - i allways be nice on the ferry, i wave, i drink or dance, i ell them i play for fun and if i lost i say i'm in no way p.... of it was a good fight. Except they approached me like this: "F.... noob, get away play hello kitty, you m...f... carebear."
You know this is not neccessary and in no way justified.
If we or i won a battle and meet one of them at the ferry i allways say sorry guys, but i have to buy my old grandma a new pegleg XD
And try to be friendly and funny about it. NExt time you may be better or have more luck. Have fun!

And this way i also managed to switch some encounters from a way too serious and salty thing into something what was more fun.
Month ago i was destroyed by a very skilled crew, but i killed one of them and we talked and he said you are the first Solo Slooper who takes it easy and had fun, even if we robbed you.
They want to give me my loot back and i said: no keep it you have fought for it. But if you like lets do the Fort together and lets share loot. We allied, did the Fort and they even helped me to bring all of the loot on my sloop and to the outpost.
That was fun and a good experience although i got attacked and sunk and robbed initially.
Thats the way i want to play games, compete, cooperate and have fun playing.
Even if the fort action didnt take place, we had a eucated, fun talk after they have sunk me!

  • Last time we were sunk by a player ship, we invited the other crew to our party chat... ended up in an alliance and had a fun time. PVP doesn’t have to be toxic.
