Barnacles on your ship

  • The longer the ship has been up and running it will start to form barnacles. I.e its been up and in use for and hour without being sunk.....a few batnacles will form on the hull. Its been up for 3 hours without sinking used by 2 or 3 chainging crews, multiple barnacles will form (maybe by the hour).

These will put holes in your ship, the less you have - say an hour will put 3 patches of about 10.....this may pop the odd hole every 20 mins. Play for 6 hours on the same ship 18 patches of 10 that would put more holes in your hull more frequently.

These can be removed at any shipwright though at a cost.

I also think scurvy and lemons should be added, in a similar fashion.

  • Nah,... why add another negative for no purpose. No one wants to baby sit the ship I mean there's already the threat of other players. This would hinder players from actual content. Maybe for looks this would be a cool idea but would only be cosmetic.

  • It would be side focus plus its also a positive, you see a ship full of barnacles you know the could be hoarding treasure!!

  • I like the aesthetic part, it would give you an idea of how long a ship has survived the Sea of Thieves.

  • Cool idea. Heck .... I'd even be happy with a new ship hull paint that looks like the ship is falling apart. Kind of like the Wailing Barnacle ... but much worse.

  • I'll pass, SoT isn't a sailing simulator, nor is this game with survival mechanics. I don't want to have to worry about scurvy, hunger, or any of that stuff. Had I enjoyed it, I'd play a survival game or a sailing simulator if I wanted to scrape barnacles off my ship.

Sea of Thieves just isn't that kind of game. Nothing except tedium is gained with this addition.

If ye want barnacles, then I want the ability to keel haul ye if ye disobey yer captain's orders! XD

Id say thats a slight contradiction. The sailing mechanics are similar to real life as are the drowning mechanics and even being poisened by a snake! I get that undead skeleton pirates arent real but a lot of things are simulation.

This wouldnt be a great hinderence, just merely the odd hole every 20 mins of sailing and thats after a good couple of hours of sailing......however you wanna be that crew who never ports and cashes in so you can take pictures of 100 treasure chests etc......well if your that good you got maintain that old ship or get it repaired at a shipwright for say 50 gold.

Its adding depth to the game!

  • Asthetics (over time), yes please. (Sinking) Mechanics, heck no!

Sea of Thieves is a much of a sailing simulator as GTA is a driving simulator. Both have degrees of realism. However, if you take a step back, the game over encompasses more around a different concept then the mode of which people travel.

Mechanics like snakes and drowning mechanics parallel life in most games, yet most of those games don't have hunger or starvation mechanics. Nearly all games with swimming have a drowning mechanic, look at Mario 64, not really a realistic game. The same applies to Snakes, most games with snakes have a poison mechanic.

I respect survival style games with the mechanics that follow suit. However Sea of Thieves isn't that style game. Having these mechanics just stray from the main point of Adventure and story telling, while just becoming a nuisance. If the main point were survival, that would make sense to have these mechanics, however that isn't the case with Sea of Thieves.
