In my experience, I have seen no other crews using the eye of reach consistently, and I know for certain my crew never uses this longer ranged option for combat. For ship to ship sniping, the only viable use that I have found has been when in the crow's nest of your ship. This of course means a very long climb every five shots, which takes you away from vital sail-heaving and hull repairs.
My thought/suggestion would be to add an ammo cache to the crow's nest. This, I believe, would incite many more players to use this option for combat without truly having to "rebalance" this weapon. This would also be a useful addition when taking down skeleton forts, and on shore threats seeing as, at least in my crew, we always have one person on lookout for enemy vessels, and they could add to the fun by sniping during the PvE events while still on ship.
My crew and I truly love PvP, and I daresay we have gotten pretty good at it. We've tried to use the eye of reach, and I personally would really like to use it. But more often then not, it has proven to be detrimental to my thieving and plundering. With it's wild hip shot spread (in case you gotta get up close and personal before you can reach the trusty blunder) and excruciatingly slow reload in combat, I am sad to say I personally just use pistols 100% of the time I need a longer ranged weapon (excluding them cannons of course).
Perhaps this is a suggestion that only suits a niche set of needs, but that's my two cents! See you guys on the seas! (hopefully when we are running voyages, and not dressed in our Crab Crew attire driven by an insatiable bloodlust!!)
