The bermuda triangle

Awesome idea but if they added this then the casuals that Rare caters to would cry and whine that it's too hard so then Rare would do their usual and nerf down to participation trophy level so that it's so easy a baby could sail thru the devil's triangle.

The lore of the Sea of Thieves is that the Sea of Thieves is located IN the Bermuda Triangle IRL, if i remember correctly... Meaning the Sea of Thieves IS the Bermuda Triangle.

What you are suggesting is to add a bermude triangle inside the bermuda triangle... LUCKILY, there is one!

Travel to the middle of the map, where the Glorious Sea Dogs faction has set up shop, and you will notice their buildings are located on exactly what you are asking for... A rocky triangle spire... I personally call that "The Devil's Triangle", though it's not officially named, or marked on the map, i personally call it that, because it sounds awesome, and because it's a perfect coincidence that probably isn't a coincidence... I mean it's at the center of the map for a reason, right? :D

That's what it looked like before, over the course of a few updates, they made it straighter, and larger... And then eventually added buildings to it.
You can't see the triangle part much, because the picture is taken from the wrong angle, but that's the same triangle spire.

And near this triangle (aka the entire sea of thieves area), a series of strange things occur, kraken attacks, travelling storms, skeleton ships, megalodon attacks... Etc, things a sailor of good fortune such as yourself would call "distasteful events that will sink your ship".

I believe you already have what you asked for.

The only question is, do we have ENOUGH distasteful events happening in the sea of thieves? :3

I'm all about Maelstroms! Though whirlpools are kinda small and lame. xD
