would this be added? or is it to overpowered?

  • An info indicator (like the talk bubble) in the top right hand corner of the screen that show water icon to tell you the ship intaking on water, ladder icon if someone climes on the ladder and a fire icon to show a fire somewhere on the ship .
How this would work soon as the audio file is played the icon will show.
How this would function is soon as the audio file is played the icon will show in the corner like the talk bubble.
an idea just for the soundless community who play the game and newer players to tell them there boat is in danger .
i just think if this was a option why would you not use it ?

  • @t3ero As much as this game care's a lot for accessibility, a feature like this is WAY too overpowered. With accessibility, they have to be universally available features, so even if it were good for those who can't hear the audio cues, regular folk being able to also use it would mean it would be rife.

  • @silentkiller646
just the soundless community has a huge disadvantage with audio information. This would need to be added a quality of life update i couldn't imagen anybody not using this if talking important enough to show why not other information .
it would just be show icon when sound is played , i can seen how this could have change the ladder boarding meta then why play a sound in the first place?

  • @t3ero Unfortunately yes, the Deaf/hearing impaired community struggle with audio cues, but also unfortunately having a visual cue that tells you exactly what's happening on your ship is not the way to go about it. The new rats added act partly as a water level indicator, they scurry to upper decks when their deck begins filling, and fire makes smoke and embers, but there can be no feasible ways to visually cue a ladder board or anything without it being too much information. Watching for mermaids is the closest we have right now.

And with Ladder boarding, on a calm sea, it's pretty easy to hear the splash when someone begins climbing the ladder. If you're in the heat of combat, fire burning, cannons blazing, ship creaking, it is VERY hard to hear the ladder board, making it viable to board when the other ship are under pressure. A reliant visual indicator ruins that, it's a big warning sign of YOU'RE BEING BOARDED. I am ALL for accessibility, but unfortunately only so much can be done to retain the game's balance and design features.

  • @silentkiller646
yes i see the rats are very helpful to show your ship need your attention maybe your pets should play more of a part with the ladder like cats hissing at the ladder or dogs barking.
just i can see what my crew is doing at all time but i have to see what is happing to my boat.

  • @t3ero Pet's cannot be allowed to interact with the environment unless the game offers a free default pet for every pirate, otherwise that can be considered locking a feature behind a paywall, or being "pay to win". Pet's are cosmetic and cosmetic only as long as they are in the emporium. If you're playing with a crew, they should be able to listen for cues and things as well, but again there isn't much of a feasible way to add a ladder visual cue that won't give too much of an advantage.

  • @silentkiller646
what do you think about getting rid of the cue altogether wouldn't that put us all in the same boat no pun intended,
maybe the rats could act as the default pet with them running over to the ladder biting at the rope but the way it works a the moment they only show when damaged.
i do understand how it a small sound that's mostly missed by most players and a mechanic like this could change the way people want to play giving to much information might just brake the enjoyment for them.
thanks for the reply as many things i didn't consider with this concept.

  • You're not the first person iv seen get caught out by Sea of Thieves by thinking it's an "accessible" game the unfortunate nature is direct visual cues are strong and would change how the game functions and its PVP nature rewards stealth and punish those who don't pay attention.

That said you could have rats run onto the deck from time to time when water is starting to come into the hull.

more smoke effects to signal fire bellow deck.

the ladder is a tricky one the best thought I have is maybe to have the ropes flex and animate as people move on the ladder and extend the ropes into the deck by a foot or so.

  • @matmoesa
it would be better then nothing... i see people dont like change and defend balance even though it isn't if someone has an advantage of the others.

  • No, way too overpowered and it does not fit into the minimal ui SoT goes for

  • @jojo-buddy-v2 why show the talk bubble then?

  • @t3ero because it is otherwise impossible to tell if you are hot micing or not, and even that is a toggleable setting. It also isn't overpowered. The symbol is also only there when actively hot micing so you shouldn't even see it that often

  • @jojo-buddy-v2 I play 1000s of game I bet they don't all have that as a feature, Someone did decide to add the icon at some point as a feature.

  • @t3ero that is true and that is why you get people hot micing who don't know it, but I am wondering if you meant feature instead of feather?

  • @jojo-buddy-v2 :0 sorry i do
xbox task bar and pc equivalent will show if you hot micing... but it could be kinda bad if you don't know it maybe some kind of privacy rules to have it default as on.

  • @t3ero There is a difference between a small bubble UI that tells you simply that your mic is active/you can be heard, or that other players are making noise, and UI that tells you what other players are doing gameplay wise. Knowing you or someone else's mic is on is not the same as, like i said before, a warning symbol that tells you you're being boarded.

  • @silentkiller646 like a small sound?

  • @t3ero A small sound that can be washed out by the Ocean's own waves, pet or other AI noises, anything happening on the ship such as fire, creaking, cracking, etc. The point is NOT that there shouldn't be a cue, it's that a visual cue is way too consistent and reliant, therefore, overpowered.

  • @silentkiller646 said in would this be added? or is it to overpowered?:

if they added rats to show water entering your ship for the reason of accessibility I'm about 49% optimistic that a balance will be added! or taken away?
