Clear Guidance on Beached/Unsinkable Ships in Hourglass

  • I just encountered a brig in hourglass that had gotten shallow enough at Kraken's fall that it couldn't be sunk. It was 100% full of water, to the point where the deck itself was wavy, but it still wouldn't go down.

One of the people on the ship was quite proud of himself, and how it wasn't bannable because Rare said they were trying to fix it, but wouldn't ban for exploiting it in the meantime.

It would help to have clear guidance on what is and isn't acceptable. I get not wanting to ban people who are screwing around with goofy behavior, but in this case it's quite deliberate, done with the understanding that it's acceptable behavior, and quite game breaking.

I got some of it recorded, and will make a report, but I'm not sure if I'll play hourglass until this is resolved.

  • @alwayslauren Yeah, unfortunately (deliberately) exploiting at the expense of other players is the only form of cheating that Rare isn't very willing to hand out punishments for. It's sad and leads to people leaving the game or playing less.

I would report them anyway, so Rare at least knows that it is a real problem wich creates huge issues for the victims of that cheating and also so they know it might not be as rare (pun intended) as they believe.

  • If Rare says kit's fine, actually, I'm very tempted to make a YouTube video and reddit post explaining how to do it and that it's acceptable. Maybe that would move the needle.

AFAIK the comment from rare about not punishing exploits was about something specific - not a blanket statement that all expoits are ok to do.

Last time we encountered this, we decided to sail around the edge of the circle working on nautical miles. Occasionally a boarder would get close but it was easy avoiding them. After about half an hour, they either quit, or their ship despawned. It was the easiest win over the most unsportsmanlike crew we've encountered.

We went for two hours. My crew left, and I edited the clips to make the report. Eventually they showed up in a rowboat and I alt-F4d.

    Sounds pretty different.

  • I'm sorry that happened to you AlwaysLauren. I know several more locations where ships can park and not get sunk/takes forever to despawn for some reason. In Arena, you only accrued points by actually landing shots on other ships, killing other players, or turning in chests. In Hourglass, you don't even have to engage in pvp or fire a single cannonball in order to win. It's quite sad, frustrating, and demotivating to those who participate in hourglass. I seriously hope you weren't on a streak, because that would frustrate anyone who lost that due to an exploiter/cheater. Just know you're not alone. I myself never do hourglass unless it's during gold and glory, and even then I take it with a grain of salt, expecting to encounter a cheater/exploiter with every battle. I don't even bother getting large streaks, I just win 2 and turn in.

At this point, I'd be surprised if they changed hourglass, which is why I avoid it 99% of the time.

  • @alwayslauren it will eventually just despawn. I accidentally beached a sloop in shallow water on an island with a shallow reef. It sat there for like 5 minutes as I tried to harpoon drag it out of its tiny pool of water, eventually it just vanished.

  • I doubt this will be a trend. Considering how long and random getting an invasion can be someone sitting in a certain spot for potential hours would bore anybody plus they face every opposing crew calling them out for cringe strats and they have to accept the idea of their names getting handed over to support for constant complaints is risky business for them. Foolish, cringey and boring.

  • No clear response to the ticket: "this will be investigated internally, we are unable to disclose the eventual outcome of the report"

    Come on.

  • @alwayslauren ah yes the we will do nothing about your valid report response i love those
