"Feature" Request: Reconnect to previous session

  • Crashes and disconnects aren't an uncommon thing in gaming, but in SoT they're very disheartening when playing solo, especially when on a solo Sloop or even joining a random crew. In the case of the latter there is the remote possibility of getting invited back, however for the solo Sloop that crash or disconnect means anything done up to that point (even the simple act of stocking up the ship) was wasted. With a pre-made crew it's not too bad, as you'll definitely get invited back, though there is the possibility that someone will randomly get matchmade into your spot whilst doing so.

I've suggested this previously in other related discussions, but I would really like to see a system to allow you to reconnect to a previous session within a short amount of time - say 5 minutes or so.

Also, to at least prevent the ship running aground or out of bounds, should the entire crew be detected as disconnected it would be great if the anchor would automatically drop - currently if that happens the ship immediately despawns. This may result in the ship still sinking from cannon fire (Skeletons or other players), but at least gives the crew a chance to get back rather than none, and if other players are attacking leaves them a pretty easy target.

As well as the benefit to the players that fall prey to a disconnect or crash, this would prevent their need to hit the matchmaking services once again too.

    Thoughts? Opinions? Reservations?

  • This could be hard to implement, but definitely a feature I would like to see make its way into the game.

Shouldn't be hard at all, they just need to set a minimum TTL before the server destroys the session when all players have lost connection/dropped. For solo players this is especially important and to be honest considering SoT is a live service game I am kinda surprised this isn't in from the get-go.

Obviously when all players gracefully disconnect via the quit option they can kill the session instantly.

  • @redspooder They would also have to track what server all players were last on, and keep disconnected players ships and loot loaded, as well as actually adding the option for players (the easy part), and adding a function to allow players to connect to specific servers instead of one determined by their current system. Also, you know, the thing you said.

  • If youre running with a crew, you already can. Just access their profile and connect via the invite they sent out initially.

That's why I said this is most important for solo players :P

They don't need to "track" anything beyond their current game data, all the information is already in there as part of the players' session.

All that needs to be done (and I'm simplifying here for the ease of explanation) is to keep that session active for say 2-3 mins after a player has dropped connection and allow them to reconnect to that session. As SausijXzal mentioned above, the ability to join a specific session already exists as you can re-join/be invited if you are part of a group.

A simple solution would be to have an object on board that "counts" as a player and it automatically sends you an invite if you disconnect. If you talk to him before hand, he wont.

They'll already have a session ID and so forth, tracking which crew and server you're on anyway. Ship and loot etc isn't tied to the crew, but the server - at present if a ship despawns any loot on board drops where it was so.

@SausijXzal - Did you actually read my OP in full? I already covered that.

no need to overcomplicate it like that, just have it so when you click either sloop or galleon from the main menu you get a UI prompt asking if you want to be returned to your previous session.

That way, if a player clicks no and doesn't want to re-join they can instantly kill the session on the server so they don't have a load of zombie sessions using up resource server-side.

True. I was just offering a "Rare" Solution. What with their detrimental love for all things "immersive".

  • @sausijxzal well, I'm sure it wouldn't be too challenging for them to do the menu items in the same style as they already have...

  • Some form of this would be excellent, only a couple of hours ago I was playing with friends , we cleared a Skull fort and I got Disconnected, I had to perform a hard reset of my console and by the time I got back in the spot was filled with a random person, despite my friends asking the player to leave and locking him in the Brig they refused which meant I missed out on all the rewards, an option to kick a player should be implemented for pre made teams to avoid this, I really have no will to play again knowing this can happen
