    Safer Seas FAQ

Do I have the same Pirate in Safer Seas and High Seas?

Your Pirate is shared between Safer Seas and High Seas, allowing you to continue your unique adventure and story between both ways to play.

How will I choose to play in Safer Seas?

Before you set sail, you can choose to play in either High Seas or Safer Seas. You cannot swap between Seas in-game and will need to start or join another session to change Seas.

Will High Seas be quieter because some people are playing in Safer Seas?

Everyone sailing in High Seas will be brought together just as they are now. Safer Seas is a completely separate set of players who do not take up or affect the Ship slots available on each High Sea server.

Can I play with anyone else in Safer Seas?

You can play with a crew of friends on the same Ship in Safer Seas. It’s just you and your friends, there is no ‘Open Crew’ option in Safer Seas.

How does Gold work in Safer Seas?

In Safer Seas, you have less risk from other pirates and therefore will earn Gold at 30% of the rate that you would in High Seas.

There is no limit to how much Gold you can earn.

Any items you buy in Safer Seas will cost the same as they do in High Seas.

How does Reputation work in Safer Seas?

In Safer Seas, you have less risk from other pirates and therefore will earn Reputation at 30% of the rate that you would in High Seas.

You cannot ever earn any Reputation for Athena’s Fortune or Reaper’s Bones in Safer Seas.

You cannot ever earn any Allegiance for Guardians of Fortune or Servants of the Flame in Safer Seas.

For Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance and Hunter’s Call, once you reach Reputation Level 40, Reputation is capped and cannot go any further.

You can continue to play in Safer Seas no matter what level you are, but you will not earn Reputation past Level 40 for the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance or Hunter’s Call.

How do Letters of Recommendation work in Safer Seas?
You cannot buy Letters of Recommendation from Larinna in Safer Seas.

How do Doubloons work in Safer Seas?

Doubloons are earned at 100% Value in both Safer Seas and High Seas. However, there are fewer ways to earn Doubloons in Safer Seas as many of the features that reward you with Doubloons are unavailable.

How do Ancient Coins work in Safer Seas?

Ancient Coins are earned at 100% Value in both Safer Seas and High Seas.

Ancient Skeletons will have the same chance to appear in Safer Seas as in High Seas.

How do Season Rewards and the Plunder Pass work in Safer Seas?

Seasonal Renown is earned at 100% Value in both Safer Seas and High Seas.

Any progress towards Seasonal Rewards is shared between High Seas and Safer Seas.

Any currency you earn as a Seasonal Reward or Plunder Pass Reward will be earned at 100% Value, regardless of if you are in Safer Seas or High Seas.

There are some Trials that you cannot complete on Safer Seas due to the features they relate to being unavailable in Safer Seas.

How do Live Events like Gold and Glory and Community Weekend work in Safer Seas?

Live Events are not active on Safer Seas, you will need to head to High Seas to take part in these.

How does Lazybeard work on Safer Seas?
Lazybeard will be the same in Safer Seas as it is on High Seas, if you are not active then you are removed from the game. This makes the experience equal between High Seas and Safer Seas, and helps prevent gameplay exploits such as earning Commendations whilst you aren’t even present (for example Sailing X Miles).

How do Shops work in Safer Seas?

All Cosmetic Shops including all Outpost Shops and the Guardians of Fortune and Servants of the Flame Shops are the same in Safer Seas and High Seas. If you meet the requirements to buy an item, you can.

At the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance and Hunter’s Call Company Shops you cannot buy Emissary Flags or Promotions and Company Items after Reputation Level 40.

At the Athena’s Fortune and Reaper’s Bones Company Shops, you cannot buy anything.

How do Voyages work in Safer Seas?

How do Tall Tales work in Safer Seas?

You can experience the narrative adventure of any Tall Tale in Safer Seas.

How do Hourglass Faction Battles work in Safer Seas?

You cannot vote to pledge Allegiance to either the Guardians of Fortune or Servants of the Flame in Safer Seas, and as such you cannot enter any Hourglass Battles or earn any Allegiance.

How do the Faction Hideouts work in Safer Seas?

You can still visit the Faction Hideouts if you have unlocked them in High Seas. You can still play or replay the ritual moments with Flameheart or The Pirate Lord.

Can I play as an Emissary in Safer Seas?

Emissary Play is not available in any form in Safer Seas. Emissary play’s core design is more reward at the cost of greater risk – being more visible to other players. There is no increased risk from other players in Safer Seas, and therefore no Emissary play is available.

Can I Captain a Ship in Safer Seas?

It is not possible to take Captained Ships into Safer Seas. Playing as a Captain, including all its features like earning Milestones, Saving your Ship Cosmetics, Captain’s Voyages and cashing in treasure at the Sovereigns is therefore only available in High Seas.

Can I progress my Guild in Safer Seas?

It is not possible to progress your Guild in Safer Seas as you cannot set sail on Guild Ships in the same way you cannot set sail on Captained Ships.

Will there be any difference in how often World Event experiences are available in Safer Seas?

In High Seas, the World Events that are available to you partially depends on factors caused by other players. For example if a Skeleton Fort is active and another player takes a long time to complete it, this will make it take longer until the next World Event is chosen - similarly, if another player completes it quickly it takes less time until the next World Event is chosen. With this in mind, any server you play on will always have dynamic and slightly different chances of seeing different events.

Safer Seas will not be impacted by other players, and therefore World Events will always last for as long as they are active by default or, if you are engaging with them, until you personally complete them.

Certain World Events are also not available in Safer Seas. This means that the world events that are available become slightly more likely, because they are being chosen from a smaller list. However, this will have a negligible impact on your experience overall and has been done to ensure that Safer Seas maintains a richness of experience.

Megalodons are not affected by other players, and as such will attack your Ship with the same frequency in both High Seas and Safer Seas. The Shrouded Ghost has the same rarity in both seas, and the Commendation for defeating it will also always count on either sea.

The intention with Safer Seas is that you always have opportunities on the horizon and that broadly speaking events that are available will occur with the same intended frequency as they do on High Seas.

Does the Megalodon appear in Safer Seas?

The Megalodon roams the waters of Safer Seas in the same way as High Seas and will attack your Ship with the same frequency. The Shrouded Ghost has the same rarity in both seas, and the Commendation for defeating it will also always count on either sea.

Does the Kraken appear in Safer Seas?

The Kraken appears in Safer Seas and will still attack your Ship.

Do Skeleton Ships appear in Safer Seas?

Skeleton Ships patrol the waters of Safer Seas so your ship can get attacked, and the Ship Battle World Event will also still appear.

Do Ghost Ships appear in Safer Seas?

Ghost Ships will appear in Safer Seas as part of Ghost Ship Voyages and the Ghost Ship World Event.

Does the Chest of Fortune appear in Safer Seas?

How do Commendations work in Safer Seas?

If you play in Safer Seas, you will still be able to feel the sense of progression and pride in your achievements that Commendations award you.

We recognise that in High Seas, the shared world may affect your ability to earn Commendations and Achievements, but this is not a guarantee. Commendations that do not involve other crews are intended to be a reflection of your own personal achievements. As such, Safer Seas does not avoid celebrating this type of personal achievement that are unique to the player and their story in how they earned them.

  • Appreciate the list for the commendations and such that won't be available in Safer Seas,
but will this be understandable in a Safer Seas session? Will people be able to check their commendations list and understand which ones they can/cannot do because they're in that server type?

Like having the commendations on a lock, or blurred out, or marked to say it can't be done.
Otherwise I feel people might do things, get no credit, and be very confused 😅

    Thanks!

  • Very helpful information.

It will be interesting to see how many Shrouded Ghosts people find once there has been out for a while.

Absolutely yeah, these Commendations will be locked with a message explaining that they are only available in High Seas. Everything like this will be communicated in-game, this is just an early heads-up before you can see it :)

  • Isn't hunter's call technically obtainable if you buy all promotions in high seas and then buy all the ship elements in safe seas? I'm more wondering not about commendation itself but about npc functionalities.

  • Unleash the Damned - Hit another Crew's Ship with a Wraith Cannonball, 25 times

I wonder why, because you can progress this commendation also by hitting skeleton ships with Wraith Cannonballs, is that really not intended then?

  • Hunter's Call Commendations

The following Commendations are unavailable in Safer Seas:

Captain of The Killer Whale - Purchase all parts of The Killer Whale Ship.

Since you can still purchase all cosmetics on safer seas, would you still be able to purchase it and then loose the commendation/achievement? Or this set would not be available, or you would be able to buy it, but unlock commendation when you log on to Higher seas?

  • All commodity related commendations are impossible on safer seas not only the stolen one.

  • Overall, this seems fair, but I really do wish commendations were also capped at like grade 3. I understand that those are mainly PvE experiences and having PvP or generally a player encounter during those isn't part of the commendation, but just the sense of achieving something through playing the game as it was all those years feels right. With how it is, not only new players will complete commendations on Safer Seas, but I feel like a lot of the older ones will also go there to not go through the trouble of encountering another ship, which removes a reason you could have had a player encounter on High Seas. I think Safer Seas should be only used as a beginner tool, a place to chill or a story mode for old and future stuff, not something where you go to safely progress stuff so you don't get bothered - that fact was always part of the gameplay. Live Events not being active on Safer Seas is very good, even though a lot of them are mainly PvE content and in my opinion same can be applied to commendations, making it so if you want to truly complete stuff you need to get used to High Seas.

You cannot progress beyond Level 40 and buy the associated Promotions in Safer Seas. If you were to play in High Seas, and have a Promotion or Company item available, these are locked for purchase in Safer Seas.

For further clarity please see the Shops section of the FAQ.

Brilliant spot, this was an error that has now been rectified - thank you!

  • Are the maps on the map board the auto-generated maps or will maps from High Seas appear there?

I suspect auto-generated only, otherwise it would be possible to transfer Athena loot into Safer Seas

AFAIK the only way to add maps as a player is be on that server or have a voyage posted and get merged because of server end of life / no other players. How could another player's map end up on a Safer Seas server ?

  • @destmor This was the most important concern I had with commendations. Whether the commendations CAN be earned in PvE instances doesn’t care for the fact that a lot of these commendations are completed within instances where there is the threat of PvP. I totally believe that safer seas should be an instance where people can play the game at reduced rewards, have the level cap and experience everything the game has to offer minus any PVP elements or “Endgame” content i.e Pirate Legend

  • @ictus-xxi said in Safer Seas FAQ:

Absolutely correct, this was not intended and has been fixed in the post above - thank you for spotting it!

These Commendations are not available in Safer Seas:

    • Haggler of Surplus Stock - Purchase 250 Merchant Commodities at a discounted price.
    • Profiteer of Sought Stock - Sell 250 Merchant Commodities at an inflated price.
    • Taker of Stolen Stock - Sell 50 Stolen Merchant Commodities at an inflated price.
    • Master of Shifted Stock - Make the most possible profit buying and selling 150 Merchant Commodities.
  • You are being COMMENDED for completing a sometimes difficult task for example 500 Skeleton ships sunk and I feel for someone to just spend all there time in safer seas grinding out fleets and skelly ship encounters, fort completions and hunters call commendations (removing pretty much any chance of ever finding anyone naturally fishing in High seas, having those moments where speaking from experience you’ve secured your last 3 raven islehoppers because you came across a crew and had that story to tell from it is totally ruining and removing these natural moments. I still believe players should have access to everything the game has to offer minus PVP and “endgame content but commendations should be switched off. It should be the equivalent of the hourglass faction commendations where there are certain ones that don’t start until you’ve reached obtaining your curse.

  • I feel the benefit of being able to reach level 40 in factions and earn reduced gold and rep and experience everything the game has to offer is more than enough.

  • I think Legendary Hunter of the Shrouded Ghost should not be available in Safer Seas. As you have said, PvP Interactions and Encounters can influence your commendation progress. Shrouded Ghost is a very rare encounter, also other players might be cooperative or not. I don't think that's fair if someone can get progress in Safer Seas easily with 0 risk while players on the Higher Seas have a risk of failing to kill it. Even if the commendation is not directly PvP related, it can be sabotaged by other players. Also since there are Megalodon spawn conditions like 1 active Megalodon limit on each region, players on Safer Seas have higher chance for the encounter.

  • @aethelthriyt the chance is incredibly low encountering it so I wouldn’t worry about it being “farmed”.

  • This is a fantastic list! Thank you for pinning it so we can refer back to this in the future.

  • I was wondering if the elements that aren’t being included in safer seas, will still be in place within the game world? So for example, will FOTD still exist as a physical location, maybe with dialogue interaction to inform the player to ‘Sail the High Seas’ to interact? Or, will they be removed from the safer seas version of the game?

    Would Old Boot Fort reappear?

Ahoy - the Fort of the Damned is still there, but you cannot light all the lanterns or find a Ritual Skull or Skull of Destiny to start the event; just like if you went there now without the lights/skulls required to start it. The World is the same between Safer Seas and High Seas, with all the same islands and layout.

  • @tesiccl Unless there is nothing challenging about Megalodons. The only reason that you may fail to kill it is the behavior of the other players. With no other ships on the server increases the chances of the encounter and greatly increases of the probability of killing it. People just can farm with solo bigger ships and invite each other. Lesser chance of spawn doesn't mean anything to me. Just think about a crew's panic and their struggle to kill it as fast as they can because of the factors of higher seas while safer seas players can even go for a smoke break during the fight because of the 0 risk. It is unfair.

Ahoy! As mentioned in the original post we recognise that other crews can have an effect on your ability to earn Commendations but this is not guaranteed. Many players will have earned the Hunter of the Shrouded Ghost or other commendations with no other crew nearby, and it still counts for them. Unless the Commendation requires you to play High Seas only content or very specifically requests you to interact with other crews, we do not feel we should punish players by not allowing them a sense of personal completion from Safer Seas.

The Megalodon is not limited to 1 per region, and there can in theory be one active for every crew in the server at the same time. Hope this helps clarify!

  • Will letters of recommendation be available at Larinna, and would you be able to buy letters of recommendation once you're at level 40 or would it be blocked unless on high seas?

  • "Can I Captain a Ship in Safer Seas?

It is not possible to take Captained Ships into Safer Seas. Playing as a Captain, including all its features like earning Milestones, Saving your Ship Cosmetics, Captain’s Voyages and cashing in treasure at the Sovereigns is therefore only available in High Seas."

I hope this will be changed over time. Personally this won't push my friends and I to play in high seas, no captaincy features are worth getting sunk by griefers over. Other rewards that players have earned are still in safer seas so it's a bit disappointing that the line is being drawn here. Interestingly it also means that a handful of ancient coins shop content is ineligible for safer seas, so at a minimum any captaincy items should come with a disclaimer that they're only for the high seas mode.

Good question and I have added this to the FAQ, thank you!

How do Letters of Recommendation work in Safer Seas?
You cannot buy Letters of Recommendation from Larinna in Safer Seas.

  • How do Ancient Coins work in Safer Seas?

Ancient Coins are earned at 100% Value in both Safer Seas and High Seas.

Ancient Skeletons will have the same chance to appear in Safer Seas as in High Seas.

Am I right in assuming that this means that Ancient skeleton odds are tied to individual players then? We wouldn't want Ancient skellies to be 6x more likely because there's only one crew to spawn on.

  • PLEASE make safer seas for enter multiple ships.

  • This seems to be a great update especially for people who dont want to pvp and for beginners. Excited to see how this will work.

  • Rare doing literally anything they can to make the PvE mode absolutely unplayable for anyone looking for some form of progression. Literally 2/3 of the game is removed just to please the people who would do nothing but whine about others being able to have fun while progressing by doing the activities (you know, the gameplay) this game encourages them to do.

  • Hi, in multiple instances it has been mentioned that you may want to use safer seas to fish for the hunters call and I am wondering if the hunters call rep is at 30% too, in which case I personally dont see safer seas as useful for this purpose as you already get such little reputation at a high level in this company

    Well wishes from me!

  • @brightpage174 It's not PvE mode, it is Beginner Mode.
