  • Welcome to Sea of Thieves, where we've asked for this since day one. It would be ideal, but I've given up any hope of them actually doing this.

In case you (or anyone else reading this) don't know, this game uses Windows' Default Communication Device not its Default Device for in-game chat. My theory is that this is due to Microsoft's privacy policies, as it's the only thing that makes any bit of sense.

Anyway, you can set your Default Communication Device either through Game Bar's audio widget or via the Sound Control Panel (in Windows 10, just right-click on the speaker icon on your taskbar and go to Sounds. In Windows 11, which I don't use, I believe it's through "more sound settings" in the sound settings). Find your mic, right-click and "Set as Default Communication Device"*. Turn on your chat indicator in the game's audio settings, and you should see it flash top right when you talk (though there's no way to really check the quality without someone else in-game).

*Note: this can sometimes change randomly after a Windows update or if you connect a Bluetooth headset, so you may need to revisit it. Also, make sure your device is set to 48000Hz if possible. Not sure if it's still the case but for a long time around Season 8 the game didn't play well with 441000Hz (voices sounded garbled).

  • For me, setting the standard voicechat output in the game bar helped with the issue. Windows 11
Dont know how but it works now
