'Spice' in Hourglass

  • I very much like hourglass, it offers an environment where I can hone my ability in and enjoy pvp combat.

However, after awhile it gets fairly stale. Sure having two ships duke it out with no funny business is good and all, but after hundreds of battles I start wishing for something a little bit more.

Usually in competitive games, there is a secondary element at play that you need to keep in mind while you are trying to claw victory from the enemy team. Whether you're trying to plant/defuse the bomb in counter strike, capture the flag in Halo, or just finding better attachments for your weapon in Apex there is typically some objective to do or benefit to achieve that helps keep the game fresh and unpredictable, a certain spice if you will. Outside of the odd rock and third party, this doesn't really exist in hourglass.

My question is, is there a way to add this 'spice' in hourglass without disrupting the competitive environment HG has? This can be anything from additional supplies popping up in the arena as the match goes on to even alternate win conditions if the match goes on too long, although the latter option would have to be implemented with care to the extreme.

If you have ideas, or think the mode is fine as is, then feel free to share your thoughts below.

  • there is spice. A lot in fact from what I read.

Third party ships. Megs spawning. Kraken spawning. Skeleton ship spawning. Volcano erupting. Kegs in water.

But all these things? Nobody likes for reasons unknown.
Heck you can make your own spice. Have a few Meg kegs with your ship, nearby in a rowboat or island, maybe a skeleton fort and use the towers as extra way of keeping the heat.

None of these feel like they're supposed to be part of the mode and usually make fights super one sided and boring.

  • @wulfenthrad there are already two "factors" in the game mode, naval and boarding. They've just been repeatedly ignoring boarding so hard that it feels worse than when HG came out. I mean I get a lot of the changes but blunder spread change? That one was just stupid and it seems like they don't intend on fixing it. And basically every new weapon is very clearly a "PvE" weapon that isn't designed for PvP at all. Which just doesn't even make sense, it is a PvPvE game and making certain weapons for only one half of the game is dumb. And it's not really better on the naval side. Almost every new cannonball or throwable is useless in naval, or downright worse for the gameplay.

What can they do? Idk fix the balancing, make new additions that are impactful for the right reasons, and keep working away at bugs. HG is just a stark reflection of the current state of PvP. The fact it's getting boring means PvP hasn't changed in years.

  • @Wulfenthrad Honestly, if you're feeling confident try defending. It definitely is a change of pace (allowing fights to happen anywhere) and can offer some increased rewards for winning (stash grade).

For more of spice, you can change how you play (chosen ship role / ship type, weapon loadouts, forcing orbitals, tank practice) and the arena hazards you fight around (open seas, the storm, the Roar, a Ghost Fleet, final chapter of LotV, Pirates Life TT 5, etc).

The sandbox is large, you'll find something.
