The Volcanoes in Devil's Roar are the Opposite of Fun

  • First off, I like the challenge of the new area and a lot of the new additions are great. But my problem with the volcanoes is there seems to be little to no "cool-down" between when they can erupt. Again I understand the challenge in this unpredictable landscape, but from there should be a limit. I spent an hour trying to go to Flintlock Peninsula trying because every time I dropped anchor, the volcano would erupt, and I only had a sloop, and we didn't have enough man power simply to tank the eruption. So we drove the boat away. This happened 4 times.
THIS IS NOT FUN. I understand it is supposed to be challenging, but this is not a challenge, it simply wastes time. I feel there should be more time between eruptions for how long they last as of right now. Maybe make a cool-down depending on how long the eruption itself lasts, instead of a static amount of eruption time, and a short time in between when it can erupt again.

  • It really feels like you wait for the volcano to stop, get to the island, feel the rumble, and think "Already?"

  • if ya'll don't like the forsaken shores go back to the old map/old zone? It's fine the way it is IMHO. Just cause you can't handle the volcanoes doesn't mean others can't also. I like the area and hope they leave it alone. If anything I wish it was even more 'difficult'. IE ashen skeletons, fire, burning.. I enjoy a challenge.

  • @auntrusty-mango if you don't like it go back to the old area? Let the rest of us enjoy it.

  • I agree with you! Right now there is NO reason to go into the devil’s roar beside commendations and cosmetics. With the frequency of the eruptions and geysers. I feel that I can make more loot faster doing things outside of the roar. It once took us 3 HOURS to do A SINGLE riddle due to unfortunate happenings. This needs a nerf to be fun at all.

@treefittymonsta The rest of us? The rest of who? The 30 people that like the new area?

    Sure.

Everytime I'm in devil's roar it's packed with ships. Y'all just want easy mode.

Pfft it's not about making gold. It's about the adventure. Nothing needs to be nerfed. Just go back to old zOne if u want ez mode.

If I want a crazy epic journey. I head to devil's raor. If I wanna just chill and sail about.. I'm in the old zone

  • @treefittymonsta People are there because it's new and they want the commedations. This "devils roar is hard mode" nonsense needs to stop. It's not hard, it's just more tedious. Sailing away and afking for 7 mins while you wait for the volcanoes to stop erupting is NOT hard. In virtually every way other than making you waste time, the devils roar is easier that the base area. It has geysers that kill all types of the skeletons without you having to do a thing, the random loot you get off the shore has twice the value just because it's in "the devils roar", and from what I can tell there are much more ammo crates in the "DR" than the normal area. The only threat to you is horribly designed aimbot volcanoes that completely screw this games otherwise intuitive design and are straight up just un-fun with no counterplay.

  • @TemptingImp5813 it is good you want to voice your opinion. There is a specific place you can post this particular feedback:

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/73310/mega-thread-forsaken-shores/201

It helps organize what all us pirates feel about volcanoes, geysers, and other things in the Forsaken Shores update.

  • I put the same thing up about the volcanoes and they're cool down time maybe they'll change a little bit when the event is over I don't mind hard or more difficult but it's ridiculous

  • @treefittymonsta there's a difference between challenging and stupid there's nothing challenging about doing something and getting sniped by a volcano Aimbot

  • @treefittymonsta the person right up above you told you exactly right when you make something hard you make it where it requires skill dodging aimbots is not skill

  • Also, if you leave your boat far away and row in it just ends up getting sunk by other players because the devils roar is where everyone is at the moment. Happened to me when I was trying to solo in devils roar for a while.

  • That's what rowboat are made for. You should drop anchor far from island with your main boat, then join island in a rowboat, wich can easily dodge volcano's rocks in case of eruption. The only thing that i think needs a minor tweak is the earthquake intensity. It is so difficult to move on... But i love the challenge of devil's roar, it is something the game really needed!

  • That’s the technique in a sloop. We take a galleon (tank) and go straight in, wether it’s erupting or not. Have one person bringing her in, if they get hit it’s next pirate up. We also rotate who stays a keeps the ship afloat, while 2 or 3 of us hit the island to complete the mission. You die, you’re on repair duty. It’s fun doing the missions on active valcanos... lava burns, geysers galore, ash and rocks falling all around, the steam coming off the boiling water, tremors....getting a little better every day. Nothing finer then pulling up to the outpost having the ship look like it’s been to hell and back.

  • ahoy me mateys.
for all of those who find it hard here's what i think. take a look at your maptable. the volcanoes reach is one square and they make an erupting- sound just before the black smoke appears... if you don't hear that sound while earthquakes stay on the island, you're safe. pretty easy to handle... even on a solo sloop

  • 1 person in bottom deck of gally. Fix first then bail. Fix instandly when bottom deck has hole. leave top deck with holes. 1 person can keep a gally up in the middle of erupting vulcanos.

    Its easypeasy

  • I think everything about DR is fine as is, with one exception. As the OP stated, certain islands have obviously been coded to erupt with extreme prejudice when a ship gets close to shore. So if your current crew tactic is to leave and come back, you will get another eruption within 20 seconds of dropping anchor. If this repetition were just once or twice, I would say its all good. But I have more than enough times where it happens 3-5 times in a row. To the point where you give up the voyage for another island or tank the eruption for 5 minutes to stop this obvious 'trigger'.

Personally, I just move on when it erupts twice in a row. There are more than enough voyages on the small islands. But with the new cargo runs, you dont get that choice.

    I like the aimbot.
I like the eruptions and quakes.
    I love the geysers.

Just tone down the back-to-back eruptions.

I agree on the back to back eruptions, I think they should be unpredictable, but like you I have sat through multiple eruptions. I have come to the conclusion the only time it's worth going to the Devils Roar is in a Galleon where you can just tank it.

You know, I would even be fine with a back to back eruption as long as it was rare, just for unpredictability sake.

  • @treefittymonsta looking back through, I’ve found nobody is saying the the new area is hard! Some are even calling it the opposite! Also I think that some people have different goals than you when it comes to playing SoT.

I like the chaos that is generated by the eruptions. I hope they don't change anything about the area.

  • @temptingimp5813 I understand it should be fun..but it was also meant to be a challenge to the more experianced pirates..maybe go back to the old area till you are more experianced. For my crew..we never have problems over there.

  • Me and my main sloopmate @creepyweirdguy2 do drive buys when a volcano is erupting on island we need.

step 1-just point sloop for a close drive buy.

Next- one goes below deck to patch and eat nannas as we take shots other hides in cannon and shoots onto island to find chest or captains.

We find it fun.... we never wait for eruptions to stop. We got wonderus box of secrets even during full eruption. You really dont have to wait for them to end

  • I like the little bit of notice before an eruption. I dislike the range on the debris. That being said, one of the finest moments I had int he devils roar was rowing to an island, finding out it was the WRONG island and having the Meg eat my ship on the row back. Row to the RIGHT island, find a pile of skulls (2 villies, two hatefuls and a foul) and rowed that right to the outpost to profit.

What a stressful but fun trip that was!

I'm a little peeved that the patch notes said that geysers would no longer spawn on dig sites.

  • @rayzback we do drive buys in sloop launch partner onto erupting island one stays below deck on sloop for repairs as our sloop passes by

Seriously, just stop with this stupid argument of "if you don't like it go back" and "all you want is easy mode". Devil's Roar is easier than the original base area.

#1) You can tell which volcano is going to erupt 5 minutes before it does, thanks in part to the smoke billowing and the rumbling of the ground.

#2) There are no storms roaming the area. If the developers wanted to make a real challenge, they should have us trying to approach an island with lava rocks flying out while in the middle of a huge storm.

#3) Loot was more rare and less valuable in the base area. My crew and I made more money in one run through Devil's Roar last night than we do on two runs through the base areas.

#4) The lava rocks flying out of the volcanoes are easy to avoid. All you have to do is anchor behind a large rock formation. I did that a few times last night and the lava rocks being blasted towards us would just hit the rocks and explode. Our ship stayed safe while we rowed to shore in the row boat.

This new area is not perfect right out of the box. It needs some tweaks because right now it is easy and it is boring having to wait through eruptions that really aren't a danger. I suggest shorten the length of the eruptions. Otherwise, you're waiting an exorbitant amount of time doing nothing, much like we did in the original base area, or you anchor your ship in a safe location, row over, get the treasure and row back...in which case there was no challenge; just an annoyance.

It's not about "handling" the volcanoes but the game has no effective countermeasures. They aren't challenges. They are just giant environmental hazards you wait out or try to avoid dieing randomly too.

  • My solution would be one of these things; have the eruption frequency toned WAY down, or have the loot value go WAY up. Right now I feel the risk isn’t worth the reward. Honestly I would be happy with either.

  • @barnacle-blake

I'll give it a try while slooping about... although there is some truth in "the more the merrier". Wishing we could put +1 on each ship type.

  • The rewards for loot is well worth the extra risk. Doing Order of souls missions has never been so easy, just run around in circles close to active geysers and job done.
If i had one complaint, and i do. It is that the skeletons with snipers and pistols can and do hit you after you are tossed skyward by a geyser, and when you hit the ground you die due to low health, even if you were full before you shot up into the sky. But hey.. It's all good!
