Fishing for Trouble

  • Sharing an experience that just occurred and is one of the things I love about this game...

I set sail this morning solo in a sloop. Today's agenda, fishing for plentifins, my ship decked out in all its Ruby Splashtail glory. Sailing out of Plunder Outpost, North towards Snake Island to avoid a storm to the Northwest.

Well clear of Snake Island, an unmarked Brig is coming straight South and near directly head on. I'm not looking for a fight, but I'm stocked enough and they don't appear to be slowing down or preparing for combat. We share a friendly "Ahoy!" and wave as we pass and I continue North Northwest.

As I'm coming up on Rum Runner Isle, I noticed a fellow Sloop parked there on the Southeast side, two rowboats and another pirate fishing on the shoreline. I pull up to the West of the island with a friendly "Ahoy!" and park my ship (sails up, anchor up) to his starboard side, far enough away to hopefully signal that I'm not here to fight.

As I'm coasting to a stop, I noticed the unmarked Brig has turned around and is approaching with mostly raised sails. I think, this will be neat, two Sloops and a Brig all fishing on the same island. The Brig had other ideas in mind. The Brig pulls in close to the other Sloop, comes to a near stop and begins unloading cannonballs at point blank range on the other Sloop, its pirate protesting from the shore.

I immediately lower sails and move to engage to attempt to save my fellow Slooper. Fortunately for me, I stocked up at Plunder Outpost and found a few cursed cannonballs while I was there. I immediately hit the Brig with a ballast ball, jig ball and venom ball in rapid succession. I don't have any chainshot on me, but I then lay into him with cannonballs. It's not long before the Brig catches fire, is low in the water and sinks as I slowly rotate around it's hull.

There's a mermaid in the water, but two ships have sunk here and there's a pirate stranded on the shore. I'm keeping my eyes open for boarders, but quickly check my ship for any damage (there was none). I hear my anchor drop and turned to find the "friendly" Brig Captain has boarded and opens fire on me with a blunderbuss. It's a hit, I'm injured, but my ship is empty so I scurry up to the crow's nest to try to chomp on a banana.

With my sword in hand, I notice the Brig Captain is climbing up behind me. A mistake for sure as it surely would have been easier to take a final shot at my back as I "strategically withdrew". As his head appears at the top of the ladder, I cut him down knocking him off the ropes and down to my deck below, defeating him. I'm not sure what "ngao" means, but I can only guess he was either surprised at his sudden demise or intended to tell me something choice about my mother.

After a quick thank you from the pirate fishing and an offer of a ride back to an outpost, which he politely declined, I sailed off to continue my voyage in search of Plentifins.

  • Nice!

I like that fellow sloopers often look out for each other.

I also love the idea of a three ship fishing island frenzy!

Shame it didn't work out that way but sounds like the next best outcome.
