Anyone else struggling finding buried treasures?

  • Having played SoT for more than 1400 hours, I am quite good at finding the Xs, and know almost all the islands, so it is way easy for me to complete the X marks the spot maps.

However, when picking up buried treasures from other players, I find it extremely difficult to dig them. I am 100% sure that I am digging in the correct point, only to find out that the chest is not spawning. At best, it will spawn a few mm away of where I was digging, or it will not spawn at all. Is this a bug or it's only me having this issue.

  • Buried treasure is way more precise when digging, while the regular Gold Hoarder voyages will let you hit the chest if you're within a much larger range.

If it's in the dirt, you can usually see discoloration or a dirt pile in the exact spot you need to dig.

  • Ever had a mole or a gopher dig holes in the yard?

look for those around the area. It's easier to find these dig spots by looking at the sand/dirt rather than the map imo

    here is an example

  • @snikefriend Depends on the Island. I had some dig sites on Fetcher's Rest and couldn't find any of them. And I did look for the little bumpy mounds of dirt but alas.

I feel like it's a lot easier on sandy beaches and what not.

  • If you listen as you are walking you might hear a hollow sound when you are walking over the spot. It has helped me a couple of times.

  • I’m having trouble people just digging mine up.
Go 24 hours and never see a msg saying someone dug it up.

    Feel wasted.

    Is that legit?

  • @personalc0ffee

Yes it is. There's a change in the footsteps sound when you walk on buried treasure.

  • @realstyli Dude that is mind blowing. Thank you for this tip! I hadn't noticed this, but then again since I have Misophonia; I keep my volumes lower than most.

  • I just put down a map with 2 gems and a chest of rage at Shiver Retreat...

Apologies if it blows up 😅☠

  • Thank you for all the tips! I will try again today with these tips and see how it goes!

  • @snikefriend Difficult to dig, very true but once you learn the different sand patches it gives away it gets easier then normal quests.

Looks like the sand is wet or wavy.

  • @personalc0ffee
Well, it was Ghostpaw with the tip, I was merely confirming and clarifying. But you’re welcome and Happy Sailing

Same.. also looks like the quest board is just dead content already..

    I've posted a bunch, nothing.

I check over and over and so far I've also only ever seen one other player posted map on the board...

    Shame.

  • @tre-oni Aye! it seems more people are taking than putting on the board...

My hope is that one day the pool of player maps becomes global cross servers, that way it should ALWAYs be busy and populated with player maps.

I put several on the board last night. Yah they should global.

I buried many things, one of which was our entire bought of supplies for the night on Sanctuary Outpost.

Tons of curseballs, fireworks, wood, food, and like 200+ cannonballs. I left the map bundle on the ground next to the spots.

I took maybe 3 maps over the course of the 4 hours we sailed and a lot of it was just stuff people find on islands. I fear as time goes on, more people will not use this feature and it will give rise to trolls.

I'll still take maps off the board to help player's out but yah every time I took a player map, someone in the crew was like another one? It's always so lame. It's not about it being lame, it's about giving renown to other pirates.

At one point we got jumped (we had an extremely long period of quiet like 1.5+ hours) and we had to flee for a minute to get our bearings and I hid loot successfully while another crew was chasing us. We sunk them and went back for the Athena stuff and I forgot where I buried it lol. That tip came in handy, I started jumping around and found it.

  • Oh questions, when you bury something under ground, does it circle the X? I noticed sometimes maps have a circled X.

  • @personalc0ffee
I think so. It would be cool to see this in future Gold Hoarder voyages!

  • Not struggling to find but have yet to earn any rep from burying a ton of treasure, kind of seems like a pointless feature at this point

I have no idea what the circle means, only seen it on one of my maps. It definitely wasn't underground... unless somehow it was bugged because I buried it really close to a large rock? So maybe?

  • the buried treasure definitely has a smaller hit box and the x locations seem to be a bit off compared to the GH x's. The worst is when its in the grass since its much harder to see the disturbed ground than an open patch of sand.

  • The circle x means it's in a cave or underneath a large overhang.

    See that's what I thought!

Same here. It's not really worth it unless it's a small island with treasure in a clearly marked spot.

Trying to find player buried treasure on a big island when it's just dropped in a random place on the map with no clear landmarks/differentiators is a complete and utter waste of time.

To help out other players avoid wasting their time, I tend to grab treasure maps posted for large islands and just dump the bundle in the water.

  • I'm having a few difficulties with it in grassy areas. Some reason just won't let me dig half the time compared to on other voyages and quests even if there's no rocks or trees. Can't see the discolouration or the change in the earth compared to sand and what not.

  • Hey so made a thread with helpful map makers.

    Lol hopefully 🙏😅

  • I thought it just me, i also find it harder to dig custom treasures than original ones it's kinda annoying to search that x all around and later find out it was just few inches away

You have to really hit the spot, luckily the sand look different when there is buried loot by another player.
