Is the Sea of Thieves lore dead and buried?

  • Ever since Sea of Thieves was released, the game's lore has always played a very important role.
Except that I've noticed, to my great sadness, that the lore has been neglected by the developers for at least 2 years (Monkey Island aside).
Let's talk about Flameheart: when I see that it took 2 years for him to finally be in the game and end up sitting on his throne at the Reaper... what a pity...

The mystery of H? No news yet.
The mystery of Demarco? No news yet
    Dark brethren? No news yet
    Brigsy? No news yet

And these are just a few examples...

As I said in a post here, I've got the impression (with seasons 12 and 14) that Sea of Thieves is becoming Fortnite v.2.

So my question is simple: is the lore definitively dead and buried, and if so, why?

  • It's not dead, the devs just have an adhd development cycle and can't focus on one line to completion.

  • They tried to focus on lore, it reduced content releases.

Frankly I don’t care for the mystery H it was waste.

Only stuff we need to focus on is what already been created. The brethern, Flameheart, Sirens, and The Captain.

  • It would be good to actually get more lore, because nearly every adventure had an open storyline that has never been closed. A few tall tales like taking down the Dark Brethren would be cool.

  • I miss Duke.

  • Honestly, kinda miss adventures it was a way for the devs to try new things at the same time they would spoon feed us some lore, didn't like the fomo that came with it and I feel like the last 2 adventures were badly wrapped.
But I liked the CTF event to release or imprison flameheart and the feeling of empowerment of shaping SoT lore.
Though I hope they rerelease some adventures as tall tales and other as gamemodes.

  • @astralenigma The adventures were some of my most favorite things to do in SoT. I would love to replay the ones that make sense. Like if Rare brought back the Shrouded Ghost adventure as a yearly month long event, that would be sick!

  • The mystery of Demarco? No news yet

This one is over though, what else needs to be explained?

    Brigsy? No news yet

I don't think there's anything more to learn about Briggsy? her TT is prety clear + she has the annoying voyage still.

  • The mystery of Demarco is ended. You can see / read the outcome on the Sea of Thieves comics (3 volumes of Lesedi rebuilding the old crew to search for a way to bring his brother back to life). It's pretty cool, but it's sad that this kind of thing didn't happen in game.

So the mystery itself is over, but the fact remains that Demarco's sister has gone in search of Demarco's soul.
And that's the point that's dropped.

As for Brigsy, yes, there are still plenty of unanswered questions: what's become of the Brotherhood? What is it doing with the mermaid skulls and so on?

  • The problem I'm raising here is that there's been a huge unfinished story arc for several years now, and I'm still of the opinion that the story has always been important in this game... except in the last few months because everything's come to a standstill. Worse still, there's a huge amount of facile storytelling and inconsistencies with Flameheart.

  • Action sells Twitch views, not stories.

    There's your issue.

Advancing the lore has absolutely nothing to do with Twitch...
And I'd say that, on the contrary, when there have been new features such as tall tales or adventures, this has generated a lot of interest... So...

  • @zeyrniyx

@th3-tater isn't wrong, though. A couple months back, devs have hinted on Twitter that the reason we've been having no adventures/tall tales/narrative/lore-focused stuff in a while, but plenty of sandbox features and tools/weapons is that player engagement just wasn't there for lore stuff (I'm guessing Monkey Island might have been too niche to get a lot of traction, adventures were a bust, and all that took a lot of resources and manpower, for weaker numbers than expected) and Rare's resources are limited enough that they can't allocate them to both sides of the game at the same time.

Also, let's be real, Rare tends to listen a lot to partners and streamers (and their vocal communities), a lot of them complain loudly about Tall Tales and things like that ("no replayability", "pointless", and so on), and favoring stream-friendly action and PVP-focused updates (whether it's PVP voyages, rebalancing World events &weapons, new weapons, Burning Blade, Hourglass, Chest of Fortune, and so on) over narrative makes sense, from that point of view.

She found it and released it in a single page of a comic a few months ago. I think that story is over.

  • @kaoteek They should bring a little bit of both to each season, they don't need to dedicate 100% just to gameplay or plot... The big truth is that the best way is to advance the story in real time, even if it cannot be replayed, and leave it written in books in the game or outside.

  • I came to and became invested in the game because of the lore in game if the devs don't add more story to the game I don't see much reason in playing the game and I'm sure as heck not buying a bunch of short comics for scraps of lore that are supposed to be in game

  • @zeyrniyx story!? STORY!? I thought sea of thieves had mostly turned to the pvp side. Story... 🤣
    I wish...

I hope your message is ironic, otherwise I'd say you haven't understood the game at all...

  • @zeyrniyx

Imo, lore is missing because of 2 reasons

    1. Lore that isnt incorporated into dynamic gameplay fails to target most of the audience, and is basically luxury ware for lore interested players. Therefore they need to add meaningful gameplay with it at the same time, aka not mysteries.

    2. sea of thieves was lacking content for its regular playerbase before. Season 8, 9, and 11 plus certain content in 12, 13 and possibly 14 delivered this. However i would say that the drought for that content was there since season 2, so imo, they were behind on what the playerbase needed since around season 5-6. This includes progression, pvp, world activity and combat evolution. Instead they added adventures, which shouldnt have been the priority. They have fixed this now, so mabye they can add a bit of lore now, but other things needed presidence up to now id say.

I miss the black market too! Duke is a funny name for it though.

  • It honestly feels like it. Which is a shame because the game does actually have some really awesome lore, but it feels like that's being shoved into a corner in an effort to appeal to the lackluster pvp and streamer side of things.

  • @felix-ashur
Honestly, the game always advertised itself as more of a player driven sandbox roleplaying game so story was always usually on the background you would have to go look for books with the events.
Only time the lore was this up in our faces was when we had the time limited adventures which felt like a fomo machine from player perspective and a resource sink with the way seasons were getting longer and longer.
I wouldn't say lore is dead but it does seem to be buried this season though I wouldn't expect any new lore to pop up.
Last season though there's journals of Briggsy and Tasha's mom going on adventures around the skeleton camps, one of them even left their remains on one of the camps.

  • @astralenigma
There was also the tall tales though. And in fact, an entire season (the pirate's life update) was based around these stories. The same with the Monkey island crossover. Heck, the Hungering Deep was lore based too. Even Cursed Sails was laying the groundwork for Flameheart.
To say that the only time lore was in our faces was the adventures is to ignore pretty much every major update that came before them.

  • @felix-ashur yeah sorry I meant the last time it was in our faces was adventures and then it took a big break for the release monkey island and it doesn't help that monkey island advertisement was the last adventure.

  • @astralenigma
No worries there. And you are right, the last time it was obvious was the adventures, even if it was around a ton beforehand. Plus, to be fair to you, it's pretty easy to forget all the stuff beforehand thanks to just how long they've spent distancing themselves from the lore.
Also, I apologize if I came on a bit strong there. It wasn't my intention to throw shade or anything.

  • As a lore person, I believe the Devs are focusing more on gameplay than the story at this moment. When they get certain things figured out, polished, etc, they will probably start working on Tall Tales again within minor collaboration from Disney focusing on the Sea of Thieves story, so don’t worry about any more collab’s

  • @zeyrniyx yeah I'm a dummy. 🤪

  • I see people talking badly about tall tales, about how they are useless content because they can only be played once, but if we analyze all the tell tales, with the exception of Monkey Island and Seabond Soul, they came with significant innovations for the game, such as bombs and the fire mechanics themselves, new iconic enemies like mermaids, ghosts... new puzzle styles. Even Monkey Island has its innovations despite not having their part in the normal game yet.

If they can work on new Tall Tales introducing new mechanics as has been Rare's current stance, it is entirely possible to continue the game's story while also bringing lasting content to the game.
