Sea of Thieves Gets Steam Behind Its Sails
Alliances are a common sight on the waters of Sea of Thieves, as pirates work together to enjoy the true adventures it holds: campfire cooking, shared shanties, fighting side-by-side as friends or rivals to defeat terrible monsters… or, now and then, betrayals resulting in a mad scrap to keep all the loot (soon forgiven in the nearest tavern). Now we’re looking forward to seeing one of gaming’s most welcoming and creative communities welcome aboard a new wave of pirates looking to find their sea legs.
Today, we are proud to announce that Sea of Thieves will be coming to Steam. With more than 10 million unique players having already set sail, we can’t wait to see yet more of you go through your personal pirate journeys and make brand new tales to tell over a grog.
This move represents a big step for Sea of Thieves, opening our world to a new audience ready to take their Maiden Voyage, meet their first Kraken, unearth rare treasures and become a pirate with a Legendary outfit and reputation to match. The path to Pirate Legend status is long, but now offers more ways than ever to reach it thanks to a series of free, far-reaching updates and new activities (and more coming each month).
Steam players seeking to delve into a rich and glorious world riddled with surprises, secrets, skeletons and, well, riddles can now weigh anchor and join other new sailors, existing veterans and well-known streamers alike. There are even pirates so storied that they’ve become permanent parts of the scenery! Use Adventure mode to explore the seas and find plunder and peril, not only on Trading Company Voyages but narrative-driven Tall Tales that will take you off the beaten path.
Arena mode may be more suitable for those who want to show off their prowess with cutlass and cannon in shorter, more intense sessions. This PvP (Pirate versus Pirate) experience sees you meet the proud Sea Dogs, first made famous in the comics from Sea of Thieves’ expanded universe, whose contests of skill and pirate know-how will test you against your rivals for glory and unique rewards.
Our new Steam players will have the opportunity to set sail as a bold solo sailor, a dangerous duo, a troublesome trio or a fearful foursome, thanks to distinct ship sizes to suit all needs. You can immediately choose to crew up with your friends, or make some new ones on the waves! Thanks to the new Maiden Voyage tutorial featuring the Pirate Lord himself, plus new islands, game features, shipboard weapons and even pets available in the Pirate Emporium premium store, there’s a depth of new things for players to learn, find, share and stream.
We’re happy to confirm that cross play will allow Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam users to adventure together when Sea of Thieves launches on Steam, letting you assemble your perfect pirating crew, whatever their preferred platform.
You can wishlist Sea of Thieves on Steam from today, with a launch date to be announced soon. We’ll see you on the seas!
