Pirate emporium ship sets - Ideas how to help Rare sell more of them

  • Ahoy pirates,

I would like to propose a topic for a discussion, which could help Rare sell more pirate emporium ship sets and would be amazing to hear your thoughts.

So currently (at least for me) the ships in Pirate emporium seem to be the least valuable items available there. Their price is very expensive (given how you can unlock better and more practical cosmetics in game) and they have a bad reputation amongst veterans, as most don't use it when playing. The most fearsome ships in the game are not from the emporium. How could this change?

Imo Rare should start lowering the prices. Selling 100 ships for £5 is more than selling 10 ships for £20.

Give a competitive edge without ruining the game balance. So most crews use a few cannon flares from pirate emporium for that advantage, which is probably the only thing worth buying when it comes to ships. Why not make most of them really good compared to free ones? We all get ancient skellies and it wouldn't take long to unlock them.

Sails - We have DA cut, utilize that shape on emporium sets and you will see more pirates buying them.

Cannons - some of the pirate emporium ones are quite frankly terrible. Why not making the barrel as simple as possible, with only colors and carvings matching and instead concentrating the creative effort on the sides to make them stand out?

Another thing that comes to mind, is the ships from Monkey Island and their majestic back sides (no pun intended). Perhaps having a slightly different shape of the ship, would make pirates want them more?

Another important thing would be colors. Emporium ships look cool from outside, but only few have anything special at all going on when you enter the ship. Why not making them just as cool from the inside? Why not adding the cosmetic aspect on the barrels too?

Also extra perks, like ship related emotes, maybe even some kind of fireworks on cool down etc come to mind.

What are your thoughts? I would really like to see more emporium ships on the seas which could help Rare to develop this game more.

  • I want a brand new ship for each crew size to be available to buy in the emporium.

The new ships could have a different hull design, be slightly larger or smaller, have more or less decks, have one additional cannon or mast, etc.

So for example the first three new ships for purchase could be:

A new ship for one pirate only sized slightly smaller than a sloop. This ship will be more maneuverable than a sloop with a tighter turning radius. This ship will have less maximum possible holes compared to a sloop.

A new ship for two pirates sized between the sloop and brigantine with two masts and two cannons. This ship will be faster than a sloop. This ship will be slightly less maneuverable than a sloop with a wider turning radius. This ship being larger than a sloop will have more maximum possible holes compared to a sloop.

A new ship for three or four pirates sized between the brigantine and galleon with two masts and three cannons. Basically an easier to use, smaller galleon. This ship will be slightly faster than a galleon but slower than a brigantine in all but tailwind conditions. The ship will be slightly more maneuverable than a galleon with a tighter turning radius. The ship being smaller than a galleon will have less maximum possible holes compared to a galleon.

Watch the cry babies come out in full force greeting this is pay to win. lol.

Well Rare would have a perfect comeback to say that it is already in game, just get 8 million.

But personally, a lot of cool ship sets, but since the sails is like a blind fold on a bigger ship, I don't feel like buying nor running up and down checking where I am going...I should get my fates of fortune set tonight, so might make an exception to that one :D

  • @zig-zag-ltu you’re being a poor helmsman then if you can’t be bothered to check where you’re going 🤣

  • @tesiccl That doesn't even make sense, your vision is literally blocked by sails, making it feel like a poor blindfold. If anything to be mocked its willingness or ability to multi task ^^. I'd rather put that focus on sails to catch full wind or checking the map and planning an approach.

I know what you mean tho, but I don't agree it's a correct statement honestly.

Besides if this is what we are discussing, I think we need to determine at what skill level are we saying that.

Someone who needs DA sails so they don't crash into an island they are going to or a massive rock? Yes bad helmsman, would probably sink to a skelly galleon anyway, anchors at any destination, fights with full sails down etc.

DA sails for competitive advantage and remove the waste of time running up and down, which also adds nothing to experience, or loosing a bit of speed - Disagree. (1 sail up, 1 sail constantly adjusted during pvp)

  • @zig-zag-ltu DA sails give very little visual advantage. It’s been argued many times that they are competitive, it’s an absolute trash take.

You’re a poor helmsman if you sit on the wheel because you can’t be bothered to check where you’re going and not communicate with your crew. If you’re solo, then put in the work, it doesn’t take much.

Lemme refer you to this post so you can see past arguments for it for more explanation than I can be bothered typing:

Look mate, yours, Jims , Steves and Bobs opinion on this forum is not some 10 Commandments. You stated your opinion I stated mine. It's what it is. You think that several people on the forum that have day 1 patch and share same opinion mean anything at all to anyone? Check how many people play this game.

If you think I am bad helmsman, I don't care a tiniest bit what you think. You said it yourself DA sails give very little visual advantage. Also, are you feeling insecure about your own skills that you need to assume/call others bad or something? Is this a competitive game for you?

PS. Highlighting the word you wrote- GIVE. Just like wearing black for tucking. Or using ebon flintlock or whatever. I'll take it if I want to, you don't need to. Also you don't need to try to imagine that you are better if you choose not to mate. People play how they want to play, grow up :)

(PS I wrote what I wrote as I hear this broken record for like 10th time)

  • @zig-zag-ltu 🙂👍

  • @tesiccl indeed

  • I like the sails with the holes, if you turn the ship to line up the holes you can see what was in front of you...

...before you turned the ship :)

  • Please avoid engaging in personal arguments and derailing the topic of the thread. It is fine to debate the content of the post, and the viewpoints therein, but disrespecting any of your fellow pirates personally is against the pirate code, and our forum rules.

  • @zig-zag-ltu ik the community reception to the ghost pet outfit was bad, but I would like to see more cosmetics where you have to complete a commondation and then they are available for purchase. The main reason I don't use emporium stuff is cuz I would rather showcase my skill.

  • I've always thought on principle £20+ for a single shipset is too much that I refuse to pay.

I appreciate the Sot model where content is free and only cosmetics are paid and am happy to support so usually buy Plunder pass and odd emotes etc but I know personally if it were £5 a shipset or even 10 then I'd have likely collectively spent well over the 20 they ask for a single.
It's similar on a lot of games, overwatch has recently also adopted this. I read it is a common thing for game devs to rely on gaming 'whales' who spend ridiculous amounts rather than having more accessible prices that encourage a wider range.

It is somewhat predatory I find, but I'm aware they need to make money

  • @hiradc Well true and I can not agree more about over pricing. Furthermore everyone appreciates the sets that take time and dedication to unlock so when you use it you have a certain attachement to it. The only ship in the entire emporium which gives that feeling would be (imo) - The black pearl, but it doesnt feel like like ''The Black Pearl'' when you are on sloop and playing on Galleon is a rare experience these days.

And I think you have a good point regarding buying more when they cost less. Currently the only emporium ship I've ever purchased was Soulflame set as I really like it, others are not as good so £20 is too much for something I don't really like that much. But if they were let's say £5 each would probabl have half the emporium sets by now. If they were £10 then maybe not as many. Also I don't like the model of selling the ship with the standard figurehead and then having roughly £5-8 each - collectors figurehead and sails.

A good example is the Monkey Island stuff. There aren't really any memorable ships from that franchise as they always change a bit too. Le Chucks ship to me looks cool , but not £20 cool when I have a bunch of cool free ones. His Costume looks good, but the price keeps me from purchasing as it's a costume, not separate items.

There are predatory practices in gaming in general but I don't personally see SoT overall as a part of that.

The base does have some with a lot of resources but I've always seen the game as appealing to the working class and middle class and I think their marketing largely lines up with that.

It's largely a no pressure environment for cosmetics. Nobody is pushing anyone into any of it, not much manipulation involved beyond just typical design to create appeal. The combination of so many free cosmetics mixed with paid cosmetics having no in game benefit is an ethical practice.

People might not have everything but they do save up for the stuff they want, the paid cosmetics are often used by people that aren't throwing around a lot of money from what I've seen in the organic environment.

The only thing that bothers me about cosmetics is that people buy them before they really know if they want to stick around as they buy them before much pvp experience. That's not on Rare though that's just an unfortunate reality of an adventure game that includes a lot of freedom within pvp.

Personally I think that this game has one of the better approaches to paid cosmetics, it can get pricey but there are sales and nobody is really pushing it so much that it's constantly a part of the conversation.

They give partners coins to advertise and even that isn't bad, they largely don't go overboard with it at all.

The free/plunder passes and ledgers have really brought in a lot of free/affordable cosmetics. I think it can be pricey as a sticker price but with all things considered I think we as consumers do pretty well around here, imo.

  • @wolfmanbush I just mean the use of 'whales' as I mention could potentially be people with more money than sense, some type of addiction, or even kids relying on parents funds etc.

Ultimately supply and demand though if the community didn't buy the items devs (in general) would be forced to lower prices so there must be enough people getting them

  • (1) Make new ships.

    (2) Add them to the pirate emporium for purchase. I would pay up to 24.99 ac per new ship.

    (3) Profit.

All owned ship cosmetics ie hulls, figureheads, sails, wheels, capstans, cannons, flags etc. will be able to be used on the new ships.

Ship selection takes place after crew size selection.

    (4) Allow players to own 2 or more unique pirate appearances.

I found my perfect forever lady pirate that I will never give up but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t enjoy playing as a guy pirate from time to time on my account with all of my progress aka a large cosmetic selection.

Pirate selection could take place immediately after pressing any button at the main menu. Players can not switch pirates in-game, only at the main menu.
