New Treasure Chest Designs

  • Chest of Merry Maids - Category 2
You find an almost empty treasure chest because there is a mermaid in inside trying on all the jewels and looking at herself in the polished bronze mirror.
When you pick up the chest it shuts and she starts singing. causing mermaids to attack you on the way back to the ship and at the out post when you try to return it.

  • Here are a few ideas that came to mind, apologies if there are any duplicates. I did not read every comment, only the main thread post.

Chest of Sand - Catagory 2
Once discovered a countdown timer begins. Much like an hour glass sand timer, a visual aid will be upon the lid of the chest and audio of rushing sand. Players will have ‘x’ amount of time to cash the chest in before it is locked for good. Returning the chest to the island it was found on will reset the timer (the hour glass would rotate 180degrees and begin the countdown again). There could be 2 or 3 variant options with shorter times offering more gold, longer times offering less.

Chest of the Damned - Category 2
When placed on a crews ship respawn times on the ferry of the damned are increased. This would hinder a crew and potentially lead them to avoid combat as they would be at a disadvantage. Equally this could be hidden on an opposing crews ship to give you the upper hand in a battle and those extra few seconds to steal some chests or sink a ship.

    Maynard‘s Chest - Category 3
Named after the famous pirate hunter Robert Maynard who ended Blackbeard’s reign. As soon as this chest is unearthed your ship will be visible to all other crews on the large map making you an easy target to hunt down and follow your every move. Alternatively if your crew are feeling brave, use it as a beacon to bring the fight to you.

Feel free the crituque any of these and add alterations/ideas.

    • Bloody Baron Chest: Similar to the Chest of Sorrows but will leak blood which attracts more sharks and skeletons then usual. CATEGORY 2

    • Spiked Chest: Slowly drains the carriers health, better bring Bananas.... CATEGORY 3

    • Heavy Chest: Makes the player less buoyant, hopefully you are good at docking your ship. CATEGORY 2

    • Flare Chest: Will periodically shoot a flair from your ship, letting other pirates know that treasure is nearby CATEGORY 2

    • Double Dubloon Chest: Requires two pirates to carry CATEGORY 1

    • Kraken's Chest: High reward, but has a chance to have your ship attacked by the infamous Kraken! CATEGORY 2

    • Tavern Party Chest: Plays tunes while your ship sails at top speed, the longer the music plays the larger the reward(within reason) and also the more drunk your crew gets. Be warned however, loud music attracts fellow pirates to your treasure and its hard to defend your loot while you are a drunken mess! CATEGORY 2

  • @Theo-Karbo and @Motion-Man i also agree that there should be a Kraken chest.
maybe every minute or so a tentacle comes up next to the ship and pulls the ship off course until the tentacle is shot, if it is shot then the tentacle will disappear but the crew will have to keep a lookout in case more appear

  • Some of these chests are impossible to handle as a single player.

  • @xredx-harlow Where did you find this?

  • What about the skeleton chest or chest of the cursed aztecs?
Where you are a skeleton while you are in possession like in the 1st pirates of the caribbean? but then again what happens if the chest is stolen?

  • Chest of SharkBait: - Category 2
only a few sharks will appear around the ship, but once the chest is in water, many more sharks will appear and all of them will instantly attack the player holding the chest.
(would force players to practice parking their boat near docks and reachable shores)

Chest of Beacons: - Category 2
Lanterns appear brighter and light on their own once put out during 10pm to 7am. bells on the ship will be polished and shined, each one reflects light similar to a sniper's scope in all directions during 10am to 7pm.
(players are safe for 3 hours before the chest affects the ship. more manageable during night hours, but trouble during the day.)

Chest of Musicians Blunder: - Category 1
plays an annoying, loud, and repetitive tune once unearthed. instruments used around the chest will fix the song to be more pleasant and quiet.
(a chest that is just annoying. is it worth it? that's up to your ears)

Chest of Thieves: - Category 2
other chests on your boat will disappear one at a time if the chest is not within point of view.
(Forces one player to keep an eye on the chest. it does not like to be caught.)

Chest of Damned Souls: - Catagory 3
Skeletons will randomly spawn on your boat. number of skeletons spawned will be from just 1 to as many as 4.
(maybe expect enemies of 4 to be fairly weak. enemy NPC's are easy to deal with, but it still forces players to call out whenever they spawn.)

  • @sirliborius That's a neat idea, but I am going to modify it a bit.

Chest of Golden Bones - Category 3 (Inspired by: @sirliborius )

Gold is gold, even if it cursed bones. After this chest is placed on the ship, every 5-10 minutes it will spawn a golden skeleton that climbs out of the chest armed with a golden blunderbuss that shoots golden skeleton bones. The skeleton deals normal damage but has twice as much hitpoints as a normal skeleton. If the skeleton kills anyone, that players body turns into another golden skeleton. The spawned skeletons have the same combat stats as the original. Maximum number of skeletons is 4. All skeletons are limited to the ship they spawn on and despawn if they fall overboard. Any kill that is not on the ship does not spawn a skeleton. If no one is on board the ship, the skeletons may sometimes use cannons to shoot at things not on the ship with golden cannonballs.

  • @hazachaos I like the Chest of Sand. I generally try to stay away from chests that can be used as a weapon, but if the additional time is small, like 5 seconds at max, The Chest of the Damned could be good. Maynard‘s Chest could be interesting, but my main concern is that it could cluster up the map if a bunch of crews find it. I don't know what the server population will be like, but imagine if 5, 10, or 15 crews find the chest at roughly the same time? Suddenly your map looks very congested. They would need to limit how many of these chests can spawn. 2-3 at most I think. Though now that I think about it, that gives me a different idea for a "pirate hunter" chest that has some counter play to it. Alright, let's do this!

Chest of Golden Sand - Category 1 (Inspired by: @hazachaos )

A golden hourglass filled with golden sand sits on top of this chest. Once it is dug up, the sand begins to pour down the hourglass. The level of sand in the hourglass represents the value of gold the chest will be worth when turned in. If the hourglass runs out, it is worth very little. The hourglass can only be restarted if the chest is returned to the island it was dug up on and set down on it and picked up again(give hint of that in the riddle). This chest encourages the crew to head to port to cash it in as soon as possible.

Chest of the Damned - Category 2 (Inspired by: @hazachaos )

This chest increases the respawn time of the crew of the ship on which it is placed by 5 seconds. A small increase, but can encourage the crew to head for port. Can be used to delay the spawn on an enemy ship.

    Maynard‘s Chest - Category 3 (Inspired by: @hazachaos )

Named after the famous pirate hunter Robert Maynard who ended Blackbeard’s reign.
Once the chest is placed on the ship, it causes the square of the map in which the chest is located to have a semi transparent skull and bones visible on it for the entire server. The semi transparent skull moves to a different square on the map as the ship moves from one square to another. So it only shows an estimate of location, not heading. Additionally, the last crew member to carry the chest has their compass pulse with a soft red light, and that compass now points to the nearest player galleon instead of North. Sloops are not tracked by this chest, but they can still see the skull and bones on the map. There is a limit of 2-3 of this chest on any server to prevent the map from becoming too cluttered.

  • I had an idea of a chest made of bones to be in the game, once on the ship skeletons will start spawning on the ship.

  • @motion-man Tavern Party Chest gives me an idea for a chest. The rest of them are too similar to chests we already have

Chest of 1,000,000 Grogs - Category 3 (Inspired By: @motion-man)

This chest works in the exact same way as the Chest of 1,000 Grogs, but as soon as the chest is picked up it effects the entire crew. Once placed on the ship the chest continues effecting the crew as long as it stays on board, even if no one is carrying it. This continues until the chest is turned in.

  • Category 3
Similar to the Skull and Bones chest previously mentioned, but still very different.

    Undead Chest

Find the chest such as any normal chest, however, as soon as the player sets the chest down on the ship, it begins to spawn skeletons on the ship it's self. Just one weak skeleton at first. The closer the players ship gets to any outpost to turn in the chest, it begins to spawn more skeletons, up to a maximum of 4. Also, by the time 4 skeletons are spawning, they've also gotten stronger i.e. carrying pistols or blunderbuss. Once the player sets foot on the outpost with the chest in hand, the skeletons stop spawning.

Obviously a chest like this will present an extreme challenge for solo or duo players, but it can also be a great benefit. If you're a solo player, leave the chest on board to spawn skele's and "guard" your ship.

Because of the challenge presented by a chest like this, the reward should be based off the crew size of the crew that finally turns in the chest. With a solo turn in being a great reward, and diminishing according to extra people in the crew.

Rare isn't paying me to give up all my thoughts about this idea, so specifics should be left to the pros at rare, but it's an interesting idea that can add a bit more of a thrill to your pirate adventure. Give players a little bit more of a challenge and sense of urgency that the game doesn't seem to have a lot of, when you don't take into account other player crews.

  • I have one

    Chesty-Gurdy
A chest with a shape that resembles a hurdy gurdy and when using the fire button you can play music with as if you were using your hurdy gurdy.

  • Chest of The Dutchman, is that you?

    www.gifs.com/gif/zKnO4Y

  • @cows-n-muffins Excellent chest ideas, I would be psyched to see most, if not all, of these chests in game.

I'd like to see a few, similar to your Dutchman I guess, that inspire fear in the crew that see it. I would love to dig up a chest and be like "...guys.... it's the XYZ" and for the crew to immediately know that we've got trouble ahead. The more dangerous the chest, the more the reward when handed in. Incentive is important. Also, imagine the chaos when another crew tries to steal one of these chests and realises what it is... would they just leave it?

    Chest of Shadows
Dark magic was used to protect the contents of this chest. A player must always be on top of this chest. If there is no one holding the lid shut, it will creep open a little bit at a time and shadow creatures will spill out like ink. The creatures stand up and stalk the ship looking for people to kill.
A player needs to sit themselves on top of the chest for the whole journey, otherwise the whole crew is at risk.

    Fat Bellied Box
This chest has an insatiable appetite and will need constant feeding. Failure to feed this chest will force it to seek out food for itself, and it's not picky who or what it eats...
Feeds this chest a steady stream of bananas to stop it eating through the ship, or players. It's bite hurts!

    Right the Lightning
This chest attracts lightning blasts. If the chest is anywhere but the crows nest, the ship will take damage with each blast. The player carrying the chest probably shouldn't hang on to it for too long, or be near it when lightning strikes.

So many more, but I have a job to do d****t!!!!

  • @k7-issues I would totally use that if someone hadn't given me the idea for Chest of Golden Bones already. Good details though!

@MysticDragon297 I like the Chest of Beacons, it's sort of like the Chest of Gloom, but dangerous in some circumstances. Perfect category 2 material.

Chest of Beacons - Category 2 (Inspired by: @MysticDragon297 )

Once placed on board, all lanterns become twice as bright, and bells become shiny and glow like a sniper scope from a distance. The chest only begins its effects after 30 minutes on board the ship, and only effects the ship between 10PM and 7AM during night hours.

I hadn't seen the chest of golden bones idea, that's a good one too.

    How about:
    Category 1, 2, and 3

    Chest of 7 Issues..... ;)

A random chest found through the pirate clues, that combines 7 random effects from other chests and applies them all at once to the crew until the chest is turned in.

Lol I like the idea of it, but I feel as though coding something like that would quite difficult.

  • @cows-n-muffins Are you still updating this thread?

  • Very cool ideas,

Some chest might need some adjustments so a 1,2 or 3 man crew can pick them up without instant doom.
But I am sure the devs can work something out of all crew sizes for the chests with these amazing ideas.

  • @dragotech123 Yes. So long as new ideas keep coming. We are starting to get some pretty cool ones now, since most of the simple ones have been posted already. People are getting more creative.

  • @faramous I like the Chest of Shadows, but I am going to modify it to do something a bit different than the Chest of Golden Bones that we currently have. I like the Right the Lightning chest as well. Idk how I feel about the Fat Bellied Box, I'll sleep on it.

    Freddie's Chest - Category 2 (Inspired by: @faramous )

A chest that refers to the infamous game series Five Nights at Freddie's
This chest should not be left alone. If the chest is not being observed by anyone for 10 minutes, it will eventually spawn the ghost of Pirate Fred. Pirate Fred will teleport around the ship and position himself out of the view frustum of players, and as close to their back as possible. So when a crew member turns around they might come face to face with him and be startled. When seen, he screams a ghostly scream and fades into nothingness to repeat the process every 10 minutes or so, unless the chest is observed, which resets the timer.

Chest of Lightning - Category 3 (Inspired by: @faramous )

Once dug up, this chest will be struck by lightning every 30 seconds. In the 10 seconds leading up to the lightning strike the chest will begin to softly glow and crackle with lightning to indicate it will soon be struck. If the pirate carrying the chest is in the water when struck, he dies instantly. On board the ship, the only safe place to store this chest is in the crows nest. This doesn't stop the lightning strikes, but it does prevent damage to the ship. During storms, this chest attracts all lighting to itself, in addition to the regular 30 second interval strikes.

  • The Big Boy Chest - The chest is very heavy and need two players to carry ( two players when they carry the chest make a sound of the tiredness).

Snake Chest OR Scorpion Chest - When you carry it decreases your health slowly.

The Betrayer Chest - You cant carry the chest until your betrayed your crew.

Owl Chest - The chest only visible at night to see.

unnamed chest ?? (i don't know what to name) - the chest breaks the compass and the map in the ship and only fixed in stormy weather.

  • The Kanye Chest
Plays mediocre music as you carry it, and it gives your character a weird feeling of cockiness.

  • Chest of the blind man: blinds the person who is carring it (can only be found when in a party)

  • @stradiz said in New Treasure Chest Designs:

Chest of the blind man: blinds the person who is carring it (can only be found when in a party)

    That's a good idea lol
Make it so you're not COMPLETELY blind though, so solo people can get angry at the chest too :D

  • Wow so much great idea here rare gonna have plenty of stuff to add in future dlc ^^

  • @jubie-mann lolol

  • Runaway Chest

When u dig up that chest it runs away from you and u have to chase it

  • The Chest of Sensitivity

When carried, you're sensitivity is either dramatically increased or decreased, causing difficulty to maneuver your way to and from your ship

  • Chest of Invisibility

Much like the chest of sorrows, though instead of filling your ship with water, the chest disappears for a moment, making you have to remember you have the chest before cashing it in just in case it has vanished for a brief moment of time

  • Some movement chest ideas...

    gnisreveR go tsehC

Any player carrying this chest can only walk in reverse/backwards

    Chest of Inversions

While carrying this chest, all movement functions are inverted, Up is down, left is right, forward is back.

  • Adding on to the "Tsehc Drawkcab" posted; bringing it into more of a category 2 chest that effects all crew members on the ship. If the chest is on the ship all crew members controls (or maybe just their interactions with their ship) are inverted.

What all is inverted I guess comes down to design and playtesting but it could even be all interactions with the ship: adjusting the sails left would adjust them right, raising the sails would lower them, steering left would steer right and even aiming the cannons would be inverted. A chest like this would spread chaos across the crew and, as long as balanced well, would create a crazy story/adventure.

    Some other ideas:
    Chest of Black Ice
    Category 2
While holding the chest the players traction with the world decreases cause them to slide around and have less control of the direction they are moving. If the chest is placed on the ground it also slides around.

So while on the rocking ship the chest, or player holding the chest, is constantly sliding around, in danger of the player or chest falling out of the ship or keeping track of where the chest maybe on the ship.

    Chest of Grease
    Category 3
This chest could leak a trail of grease that causes players to slip around. This idea could be fun for to use as a PvP chest in a similar way to the chest of sorrow. Maybe the grease trail is flammable if shot at.

  • @stradiz I like the idea, but something does not feel right about it. I think it would not be fun for the player that is effected by the blindness. Not sure, I'll sleep on it.

@Dennis-Box We already have the Scuttling Chest that does something similar.

@jubie-mann Lol, but not sure if that would be fun.

@GravityMilk We have all of those, except the last 3. Idk how the betrayer would work, this is a co-op game. Owl chest, maybe, could be interesting. Chest that breaks all navigational tools? Good category 3 possibility, but I'm not sure what the counter play to it would be. Remember, there needs to be a way to deal with the chests effects.

@its-s****. Lol, nice ideas! So simple, brilliant, I like it.

Chest of Sensitivity - Category 2 (Inspired By: @Its-s****.)

This chest randomly fluctuates the sensitivity of the mouse for the player carrying it. This could be communicated by some kind of visual ques like sharpened vision, similar to the Left 4 Dead 2 adrenaline shot.

Chest of Invisibility - Category 1 (Inspired By: @Its-s****.)

This chest gains invisibility when it is not moving. Could also grant invisibility to the carrying player when standing still. Could lead to some fun shenanigans.

We have a Chest of Inversions it's called the Tsehc Drawkcab(Backwards Chest)

@YaWaffles I got something for you as well, in a bit.

  • Chest Of The Rave -Category 2-3 This chest will cause the lanterns on your ship to constantly flicker on and off while changing color, it would also play music that could be heard for quite a long distance

Chest Of Insults Category 1 This chest would constantly yell out various pirate based insults such as YE FILTHY BILGE RAT!! at the crew who carries it

Chest Of The Whispering Wind Category 1 This Chest Will constantly whisper, you can't quite make out what its saying, but if you're wearing headphones it will sound like it's coming from right behind your back.

Chest Of The Kaleidoscope Category 1-2 This chest will effect your scopes whether that be just you're personal one or the eye of reach as well, its a kaleidoscope effect incase you didn't get that :P

The Chest Of Chaos Category 1-3 This chest would randomly select an effect every 30 seconds to 1 minute, it would draw it's effect from all the cursed chests currently ingame.

Iceberg Chest Category 3 This chest would spawn an iceberg dead ahead of your ship throughout the journey.
