This is a pretty big one. Have no idea why they don't let you join your friends already on a mission./in the game. Having to back out and then start a new voyage is crazy dumb. it's 2018. This needs to be fixed super fast.
Joining Game Already In Progress
It's only possible if you have space in the original selected crew size, but if you select the solo sloop or the 3 person galleon you can not bring in a additional friend with an invite unless you log which needs to change. No matter what system you use... the cross play works fine as they share all issues between both platforms, defeats and triumphs XD
Seriously though, keep up the good work Rare, don't let microsoft or the angry redditers push ya off the plank just yet... your shipmates almost back with the dingy.

You can go to the xbox app (w10) and go to and friends profile, there you can invite them to your game. It needs to be an empty crew member slot.
This is something I would like to see improved as soon as possible.
If you start a game as a 3 man crew there should be some sort of option to let a friend join to make it a 4 man.
or even better
Start as 4 man crew and reserve any number of slots, if you know friends will be joining later. This stops any randoms joining.
Create a new crew in the xbox live app (on windows 10). Invite them and change it to a private group. After that, anyone in the crew can invite each other while in-game, in case someone disconnects or someone wants to join later.
About this function "being added to the game but didn't make it in for launch", this always makes me laugh. Why rush the release before making sure that everything is in the game and works fine? I guess this is how games go these days...
