Looks like not only Doc and Summit, now Ninja and Tatman are hitting it. The player base is about to get huge I believe. This is always great news for the game. Its funny watching these guys play for the first time, quite entertaining.
SOT player base about to get a whole lot bigger (Top Streamers)
@biter-wylie
How is this any different from watching sports? Nothing is stopping someone from throwing a footbal or kicking a soccer ball around. Some people like watching the things they enjoy. Some like watching their game being taken to a higher level, look at the number of high level players in competitive games.Sad people..
Why do you care what people do with their time?
@enticed-malice
It will be interesting, with how Rare will do with the potential influx on cash. However, I suspect this will make the game focus on more PvP whether the old crowd wants it or not. These streamers are big into PvP, thus their audiences will reflect that interest.I enjoy the PvP aspect, so the potential changes seem fine too me. The forums are going to be real interesting the next couple months. Change is coming.

I hope this gives them the incentive to raise the server sizes
Why would they want to do that? The addition of the skeleton ships has surpassed thier goal of seeing a ship somewhere on the horizon about every 15 minutes. More players would just lead to more PvP at the expense of the PvE.
I would hate it if they raised server sizes, mostly because I play solo and the best sessions are the ones where I dont see a single other player the whole time

ninja can't play this game? :D

Probably all busy watching rather than playing. World has gone mad.
Next we will watch people watching TV on TV.
Sad people..
Here in the UK we have a TV show called Gogglebox which is exactly that, though more of a highlight reel from multiple households watching the same TV shows.

it's a sane step up from Jersey Shore.
@marsmayflower Well we also have Jeordie Shore, Made in Chelsea and many others so I’m self demoting us :P
We are probably worse xD
@Biter-Wylie I personally see no diffrence in watching a streamer, than you would sports on TV ect..
Minus I don’t watch sports or national TV, I suppose it’s just what your interests are.
I would rather watch the devs stream SoT for a couple of hours then go downstairs and watch some god awful “Reality” Tv show. :)@nabberwar said in SOT player base about to get a whole lot bigger (Top Streamers):

It'll be interesting alright. Rare have never shied away from there being PVP in this game.
Let's not forget, Rare made Killer Instinct Gold, so brutal player versus player combat is in their DNA. It's not all Banjos and Kazooies, there's also Spinal giving your face an Air Juggle Ultra Combo.
I don't think that Rare can ever balance the game sufficiently to satisfy the people who want this game to be a PVE safe-space. I think their best bet is balancing the PVP so that PVE players feel that they have options to deal with PVP players (options that will allow them to harness their anger, their hatred and feel the true power of the darkside)
@enticed-malice
They are probably jumping in now... as Arena is around the corner.
To work on their skills.
Should be interesting to see if they are around come the end of the year.
However good news... for lifting the profile of the game in general, & hopefully it will attract a fresh & loyal new fan base.So, the "big " streamers have detected SOT and all else fades away in their shadow...Hahahahaaaa, sorry but may i remember a few things ? The " Big" Summit1G plays SOT and the world stopped turning, then Dr Disrespect came along , probably because he knew that he could increase his amount of streamwatchers, now a few others come to follow this game...Please , don't think they will make this game greater , they only flock down like sheep following the first " big" streamer in order to collect some viewers but from the moment the "new" is off this game , for them, they will move to other games and will never look back to SOT...In my eyes , these aren't the real Pirates , the Real Ones are those that can distill fun and adventure from every playday they can . And a whole lot of them do that in quiet and have much more fun than those Streamers that try to orchestrate their playsession....Actually , i should waste time to watch them and see how the unpredictability of this game will caught them on suprize ...A few of these " Big" streamers will go in for a huge suprize ...Hihihihi, hilarious Fall from Grace is one the way , isn't there a song i can place here about that ? ( - George , don't go playing yer music around here , you will be banned from Church * So? And then ...Let him be free - No, Sunshine, no music. * Spoilsport)
@clumsy-george you seem upset? Summits being playing for a while now, also why would they not switch Rare wanted the game to be watchable and the amount of options on gameplay it’s perfect for streaming content. I personally can’t stand Tim the tat man but I laughed so hard the other night at him and his crew. Great stuff.
The SoT team should use all the eyes on them moment to release some info(roadmap) all the new eyes will also see what they have in store for the game.

I agree, now would be a great time to let people know a bit about what is to come. They delivered on their Roadmap for 2018, so anything they say now will have a greater ring of authenticity to it.
I think they've said that they don't want to make any promises too early and that things are still too early in development to mention specifics.
Even if they went down the vague we are planning X number of updates in 2019 and we're looking at major ones in Q3 and Q4 but have no specific dates or further info to release right now. Would give us some idea of where year 2 is headed.
As far as I remember the original roadmap had updates taking us right up to the aniversary didn't it? Or did we get all of those before the end of 2018?
@aglasgowthing
Upset ? No , Sir , certainly not...Remember the first gamereviews of so called professional gamejournalists ,when SOT came out? They buried and burned the game as a UPS Service...Gave it bad numbers 5 and 6's out of ten...But only a few dared to come back on their paths and dared to admit that they missjudged SOT and Rare and that thanks to the add ons Sot had grown worthy of 8 and 9's....In other words : They were too fast in their judgement and didn't even understood that this is an Unique game with endless adventures and stories...But Ooooh, what were they so quick to follow the herd and burn SOT while speaking discontempt of those that did understood SOT and saw and experienced what SOT really was? Only a few dared to admit they had missjudged SOT and the others? Well, if you look well, you may find them hiding under a rock of shame...Now Streamers...Rare has introduced many ,but maybe i'm weird ( * Maybe!!!???? hihihiiii, you're playing the Joker now ,right , moron?) but i can't shake off the idea that Mr Joe is the most funny and entertaining Streamer , more than once ,he and his sidekick Mr Mc Farlane puts the Streamer ,unintended , in their shadow...They all seemed ...braked or holding back...in the company of Rare...There was one Streamer , sadly forgot his name ,who went all the way, he used a cosplay Pirate Voice and was very funny and could improvise because he loved the game ...Some of those Streamers they invited didn't even knew what buttons to push...
Streamers,in my eyes ,must be like Sports commentators, they add something to the Sportsgame you are watching and enrich that race or match you are watching with their commentaries...
Now how many of those " Big" Streamers that make that Rare suddenly "sell millions" ,purely because of them, really adds to the game you are watching?We , all can be streamers , but only the best and most verbally intelligent , able to improvise , will be able to convice you to buy a game ...But mostly the game sells itself , if it's well made like this one...

Haha, yea i've thought about it as well - I watch my friends stream SoT, BF5 or BF2 which i also play but i can just check them like 10min before im like: Damn this is boring, i wanna play.
Never really liked to watch streams and i can't understand the people doing it either, i WANNA PLAY!@clumsy-george People will say the streamers “made” Sea of thieves, but we know they jumped over for the viewers. :P

Or even worse... I recently found out there are a lot of people who spend a good bit of time just discussing a game on web forums. Crazy huh?
Honestly, I do sometimes enjoy watching others play. If I am taking a break during the day, I probably will not have enough time to be productive in the game, but I can watch someone else mess around. I’ve learned a lot from seeing others do things that I didn’t consider. And often they are entertaining which is why they have high viewer counts. They are often better at PvP too since they can fit in more hours of play than I do. It’s their job.
@clumsy-george I love this especially the UPS service comment..lol Yeah I remember when it some of the early reviews were coming out and they trashed it. But can completely agree with you and @KnifeLife they only jumped on it for the viewers boost. They haven't made any real contributions to the game or improvements like the players who have been around since early alpha, alpha, beta, and launch. These are also the players that didn't leave because there wasn't any new content. These were the players loyal the the mission of the games design. Could this be an opportunity for Rare to not be an ostrich anymore and pull their head out of the sand and throw us a road map most definitely! Will they actually do it is another matter entirely.
@iceman-0007 Streamers are good for the game. Definitely. Even just from a daddy MS perspective, if one of the top 5 games on twitch is a console exclusive that's going to translate into lots of 7 - 8 year olds screaming for an xbox.
Will it be good for SoT? I think it is unlikely to hurt it. We survived the rocky launch, we survived the reign of Allmondbeard, we'll survive the streamers and streamer wannabes.
In the end more streamers = higher profile = more players = more money = more development. It's not a 1:1 equation but it's a hell of a lot better than going into year 2 wondering if there's enough interest in SoT to bother continuing development for another 12 months.
Remember the first gamereviews of so called professional gamejournalists ,when SOT came out? They buried and burned the game as a UPS Service...Gave it bad numbers 5 and 6's out of ten.
These were ratings well deserved at the time though, has the game improved since then? Of course, but how much of that improvement was due to the player bases imput? The game was buggy, shallow (3 extremely repetitive Voyages), and prone to crashing. I've been apart of every patch, how many of them actually went perfectly smooth?
This will probably come off as a unpopular opinion, but for me this game still isn't worth what I paid for it. If it weren't for the Ship combat and the crew I discovered, this game would be forgettable. For me this game is driven by the people you play with, all the rest is just background.
That isn't to say I haven't had fun, but games with lesser price tags have given so much more joy then what this game provides. The game has potential still to be worth what it cost, but you can't give a rating based on potential alone.
So, the "big " streamers have detected SOT and all else fades away in their shadow...Hahahahaaaa, sorry but may i remember a few things ? George with all due respect, I believe you seriously underestimate how powerful streaming is to the gaming industry. Like him or hate him, Ninja has made Fortnite a household name, that even "Boomers" know what it is. Even having gaming break into the mainstream media how many games have actually done that? I could name drop monsters in the gaming world, like Halo, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, League of Legends, DOTA and the like. Many still don't have a clue what these are. Most can name Mario (Super Mario specifically not any of the new titles) because that happened to be one of the last memorable games.
Streamers drive sales, this will be a great thing for Rare.
Please , don't think they will make this game greater , they only flock down like sheep following the first " big" streamer in order to collect some viewers but from the moment the "new" is off this game , for them, they will move to other games and will never look back to SOT...In my eyes , these aren't the real Pirates , the Real Ones are those that can distill fun and adventure from every playday they can . This comes off as Gate-Keeping, why does it matter how the players got here? Can people be sheep? Sure, but their is always some appeal for people to come play besides the name.
Next we will watch people watching TV on TV.
Oops I'm guilty already:
Mystery Science Theater 3000
But my sister made me watch it, I had no idea what sarcasm was at that age.The biggest reason you are seeing all of these streamers join SoT is because they saw what SoT did for Summits numbers. Summits followers were falling off, and his views were at their lowest levels of the past couple of years. Then he went back to try SoT (a game he once called trash) and his numbers nearly doubled in a short couple of days. SoT saved Summit from further falling. And the others saw this, and I am sure heard it from their advertisers and supporters that SoT was doing wonders for Summit.
Sadly I do fear that all this attention will change the environment and even the vision that the dev team had. I also fear that with so many of them now playing SoT that the chances of me ending up on one of their streams is possible. I honestly don't want the attention and wish Rare would give us a way to either say no thanks, don't want to be on a server with streamers, or a way to block our gamer tags from showing on the streams. Too much negativity when that happens and I feel it is an invasion of privacy issue.

While I have no doubt that Ninja and streamers like him have undoubtedly affected Fortnite's success, saying that they are why Fortnite is so popular is overstating it, I feel.
I would say a third, maybe half if I'm being generous, could be put down to them. The rest is because Fortnite is a well-made, free-to-play game that is easy to get into and isn't rancid with game-ruining loot boxes.
Streamers can take a game into the next level, i.e. a mainstream phenomenon. But take away those streamers and you'd still have a very successful video game.
@V**a-Hombre
To clarify, I'm not saying the solely owe their success to streamers, but Ninja did elevate it. I would even add, whenever Fortnite is discussed in the mainstream, almost always it pertains to Ninja, more then the game itself.
A quality product is a quality product, however people on average don't think that way. Its the whole reason why celebrities get payed to endorse products. Look at Nike, the shoe quality has remained the same for however long, but add Lebron's name to it and suddenly the brand is elevated and used by "Athletes."
