Skull of siren song voyage (Rework)

  • Clearly the mission doesn't work, as almost no one does it these days, it certainly doesn't work as planned, for there to be any competition for the prize.

This is mainly due to repetition, PVP uncertainty and lack of rewards. Honestly, I think this voyage no longer has a purpose in the game, both in terms of Lore and gameplay... so it could be reworked or simply removed.

For a rework I would say, bring this quest every 2 times in a year, for 2 or 3 weeks, rewards renewed every year, and the quest item changing (to make sense in the plot), Making this event limited to twice a year in this 3-week period (each) and bringing new rewards, it would be organic content that can be recycled and used for something new, instead of being forgotten as it is.

do that or briggsy will hunt skulls for eternity, lol

  • And the commendations/cosmetics attached to them?

  • @lleorb

    More unobtainable achievements? Nice.

  • @tesiccl The current ones would disappear, and would follow the format of the chest of fortune, with commendations that increase in degree each year.

Maybe "deliver 30 'items' to Briggsy" and others like that... I would prefer the skins to be time limited, but whether or not it is that way, I believe it would work.

This format could yield some extra content for the seasons for a few years without much work involved, skins, a voice change for Brigssy, a small motif in the Lore...

  • @th3-tater We already have unattainable achievements, a few more wouldn't make a difference.

  • @lleorb not going to lie it doesn’t sound like a good idea to spread out easily obtainable cosmetics over a whole year since the event is quieter now. No thanks.

  • @tesiccl The event would be active for 3 weeks during the first half of the year, and 3 weeks during the second half. A new skin, limited or not by time, for 3 weeks (maybe more or less time), would bring a flow of people to this competition, it would be exactly like it was at the time of the launch of this voyage.

The fact that the event is calm is precisely its flaw, it wasn't supposed to be like that, it was designed to have competition, like an arena in adventure mode.

  • @eastthread51441 It doesn't look bad, but I highly doubt that making the skull like a jewel is enough of an incentive to make this event competitive, gold or level rewards don't seem like enough to attract players, it's likely to be abandoned soon just like Burning Blade became in less than a season.

Scarcity is usually what attracts players, in 2018 with a fort every 3 hours, and being the best way to grab a large amount of treasures, it was always competitive, MUCH more so than this journey or any event is today, which is why I suggested limiting it by time.

  • @eastthread51441 I get that, the point is, how long would this attract players before it became exactly what it is now, a journey without competition?

Assuming Rare makes the changes you suggested, without supporting the event with new skins over time, how long after launch would it be attractive for PVP competitions?

It's speculation, but I think this reformulation is too risky to end up becoming an abandoned event like BB, A time-limited event seems more promising to ensure player engagement.

Are you not able to start the voyage? Because I have been able to do it, many times.
Besides that, so what nobody does it??

  • complete nonsense

  • @burnbacon

A voyage designed to be competitive without any competition... that's the problem.

It's a suggestion to reuse it, instead of leaving it as just another thing that didn't work out and forgetting about it, it would help to provide a little more content during two seasons in the year... Season 13 didn't have any content outside of BB.

A voyage designed to be competitive without any competition... that's the problem.

And that is not a problem with the voyage itself, but with the game and the players.

    Game:
Servers are not skill based, so you have ships from all different skill levels on each server. How older a game is, the more the players already know where they fall on the skill ladder and thus many will not take part in voyages/events that have a high risk of PvP, since they know it will most likely be a waiste of time, since they will lose in a PvP fight. You can't blame players for not being interested in something with almost 0 winchance.

    Players:
a lot of the higher skilled PvP players are not interested in voyages etc., but only in PvP. So they won't do the voyage itself, but only want to attack the ones who do. This creates the situation that the remaining players will not fight over the voyage, since none of them wants to start it.

And this isn't just with the SoSS, but it's also what's happened with world events, FotD, CoF and you see the same happening now with the BB.

You see a simular thing with the Legend of the Veil. Nowadays you rarely see anybody complete those, since the 3rd chapter invites PvP (the tornado cloud can be seen from all over the map since it has a distinct disc-shaped cloud). I have even heared multiple people who were still doing them say they only did the first 2 chapters and then voting the voyage down to start it over again to collect Athena-loot. People just didn't want to do the PvP-inviting part of the voyage. Now with the updated Voyage of Legends, people have shifted to that voyage (or dives to shrines, sea forts, etc.).

The same problem you basicly see with the Reaper emissary and others quickly lowering their emissaries when a Reaper(-5) comes to a server. The playerbase consistently is showing that they are not interested in doing voyages with a high risk of PvP (or doing PvP at all). Rare have tried multiple times with all different set-ups to create (part of) voyages/events that invite PvP, but time after time with the same result: it creates a short hype in the beginning (mostly because of the high skilled players who want to get the commendations) and then it becomes very inactive.

The problem is not that the voyage is not inviting enough to be competative, but the game and playerbase is not there for a competative voyage/event. Such a voyage/event needs skill based servers to make sure everybody has a chance of winning and enough players who are interested in both PvE and PvP. Both are missing or lacking.

You can try to improve the SoSS whatever you like, i don't think it will become succesfull because of this.

  • @super87ghost I disagree, these same players you refer to actually participated when the event was launched and had its highly contested PVP, both experienced and new players participated in this.

In my opinion, what made them participate were the rewards and reasonably fun gameplay when there was some level of challenge between crews. Then it became more of the same, a journey without rewards and probably without PVP, that doesn't attract anyone.

I'm not trying to attract players with a change in voyage quality, but through new prizes, I'm not suggesting changing the voyage, it remains the way it is, 2 maps, two items needed to get the final prize... what changes is exactly what I described in the topic.

Edit: In addition to the prizes, the time limit(for event, not reward) also attracts players within that time frame, people do not compete in events like in 2018 precisely because they are available at any time.

The same problem happens with hourglass, most players who reached lv 200 stopped participating due to lack of rewards up to level 1000.

  • Just let people dive to active ones, that would be cool
