Mike Chapman just confirmed this game will go beyond it's original ''10 year plan''

  • Rumor circulated the last year and a half regarding the game having a 10 year life period/contract after comments made at an event with RARE devs. But they never stuck as if it was going to happen, more like a ''re-evaluation'' period.

But not too long ago Mike Chapman on X (Twitter) that they planned out what the next 5 years of the game would look like, and not just that but beyond.
With another comment/reply of his confirming this again.
Safe to say if SoT was really in a bad state (Dead) he wouldn't be saying this...

  • I've long made the case here that I think SoT is in a better situation as a business than many will say.

But a stated plan is just a plan. A 10 year plan, a 15 year plan, it's just business/marketing optimism. Especially in something like the live service gaming space.

Kinda just words imo but I still think SoT appears to do good business.

10 years was the original 'plan' since release (and before). It's not a 'recent' revelation.

Yes, SoT has that hardcore fanbase which is probably enough to merit the games survival past the 10 years. Which is why those ''SoT dead'' comments are so surfaced level thoughts.

Valid criticisms and concerns often turn into over the top exaggerations and just flat out engagement farming.

It's always fair to criticize the condition of the game, but all of the "game in trouble" "game dying" was heavily pushed by content creators that were over hyping content and then gloom and doom farming the second half of seasons and/or delays, bugs, cheating, etc.

This game has had incredibly concerning months as far as the organic experience goes, performance, cheesing the game, etc.

but none of that engagement farming was ever good takes on the overall health of the business.

People take a lot of their outside frustrations out on Rare and SoT. People burning out turn it into a big ole negative thing, people that start to struggle with their content or channels or whatever turn it all around on SoT and the game. Been going on for years.

A lot of the feedback regs are tied in to content creation, so all of that drama gets turned into something much bigger in the social spaces than it really is.

People engagement farm a "retirement" over issues and coming out of retirement in the same week, sometimes the same day. A lot of what happens in SoT is that people get attention here by making a stink about something in an exaggerated way.

  • Well at this point. The story so far has been lacking in last few years.
So if they are wanting to expand that, we can say the game is 7 years old but its lore and content is only….4-5

  • I definitely think it's clear that the Pirate Emporium and constant special editions along with innovative cross-brand partnerships and collaborations are driving a lot of revenue for this title. Love that Sea of Thieves continues to see a lot of artwork, gameplay, and season content added to it regularly. It's the sign of a thriving game, IMO.
