Let us equip multiple full sized pets!
Add ignore pets options for the pet haters!
Limit it to the max number of pets normally on a ships: Sloops get 2, Brigs get 3, Galleons 4. Y'know, so the servers and boarders don't cry. (Could even auto hide them for HG...)
Or YOLO it and let's see how many pets it takes to crash a server?
No adding abilities to the pets tho.

Bad idea for that, I use the dark coloured monkey pet as a decoy. Some people think a person is being shot out of a cannon. Most would just disable pets otherwise to avoid the trickery...
The rest of your points are how pets pretty much work anyway. Pet limit and no abilities.
There is a hate for pets when you dig lol.
I will contest anyone who says they're a combat liability.
@th3-tater are you on pc? On xbox it's a bit like scattered crates that you end up picking them up when trying to interact with wheel, sails etc. I've definitely had them get in the way to the point I don't have them out during pvp

I stopped having pets out long ago because I'd be grabbing my pet instead the wheel/rigging/etc during battle. They seem to be constantly in the way on a sloop even outside of battle. Until they allow players to disable pet interacts, pass on any changes to them.
Series x, I only run into issues digging and trying to geab amd run before rhe skellies attack. Combat isn't an issue for pve for me. It always seems like they go hide.
Now, I do logoff if someone looks a little too friendly so I have no idea about their pvp behavior
