Server Performance Suggestion

  • Good Day Devs,

I want to suggest you to workover "Lord Of The Sea" - tale.
As one can spawn unlimited storage crates there and make the server
slow or even crash the lobby leaving the tale without finishing it.

Leave me some bonus points or a megalodon plushy if it helped :)!

    Yours, HERRING

  • @reds-herring this is not a huge issue, first if the crew doing the tale leaves the server the tall tale goes down

In respect to the crates, i can have more loot on my ship in less time then farming the crates of this tale

  • @callmebackdraft It's more about people not doing it, not picking up the crates,
not leaving the servers for ungentle reasons. I know one can have more "loot" in shorter time.
Im pretty sure the server handles filled storage crates differently towards single items.

  • I wonder how often that even happens anymore.

Between Rare flooding the game with intended supplies and so many supp exploits that go around I don't see many people doing it or putting in the effort for it. Karma crates and floating player barrels have huge supps in them now too.

I think I've seen maybe 3 crews do it ever, and nothing recently.

  • @wolfmanbush Not sure how often it happens. I only suggest it for the reason that it could break down a server.
Making sure devs know about it.

They have this new thing now where megs won't organically spawn if the server is all messed up. I dunno if they were testing it long before it became official but it's official now.

If they were to monitor and detect failed spawns/events based on their new system then they could determine if stuff like this is really making a negative impact regularly on the game.

The interesting part about this new system is that (as a serious meg hunter) I've been doing fine with spawns even though it could have been pretty bad for me. They've been much worse in the past than they have been so far with this update.

That might change but it'll be interesting to see if it helps them figure out what causes the biggest issues on servers. Hopefully it leads to fixes and not just nerfs and taking away stuff from the organic experience.

  • @reds-herring the floating crates despawn/sink fast enough, the load they create is is negligible in comparison to a single skelly sloop on the server, also items dropped from ghost ships is handled differently anyways, i dont know if you have noticed but ghost ship loot is larger when floating in water.

Yes storage crates are handled a bit differently but the main issue that puts a load on the server are physics (physx) calculations, and yes floating loot is subject to that to some extent but this is already being handled according to their recent communications

I don't think they'd even need to simulate the floating loot if no one is around to see it.

They could also just have static positions and simulate the bobbing up and down be completely client side. I think the only time you'd need to have physics involved is when you bump them with your ship. They don't interact with gravity because they drop instantaneously already and stick to surfaces, so they might not be fully activated physics objects like ships and players.

  • Lord of the Sea has already been addressed like once or twice in the past so I would assume they are happy with the state of that TT.
