Add an option to manually choose a server or a region in game

  • Hello fellow pirates and developers
I suggest to add an option in game so that the players could choose their servers or regions manually.
it would be much appreciated. players can have better latency and overall a better experience .
I personally have 200ms ping and the movement feels laggy, i did i all i could to fix the problem from my part but i need to make sure that iam connecting to the closest server to me and with automated server selection i wont know if iam connecting to the best possible server.

Making sure I choose those regions and servers where nobody is playing at the time. Yup.

  • @burnbacon is having to connect a vpn to change regions is better?

  • Yup lemme just choose that server so I can stream snipe that big streamer and harass them…

    Nuh uh.

  • choose a server? no

choose a region on a random server or an option to go to random servers on random regions? absolutely.

All malicious stuff already happens and it's not difficult. It's very easy for people to cause trouble in SoT, from stream sniping (of all varieties) to harassment, to pvp flexing to whatever.

On m/kb servers in multiple regions a person could see 4-5 streamers a day even if they didn't want to. A season like 14 doesn't have a lot of people playing and running into the same people is extremely common.

Letting people go to random places rather than being stuck on stamps and servers would make this game much better.

Not everyone trusts a vpn or other tactics, in game options to get out of areas with specific people is an important part of giving power to people that are being targeted.

and seeing the same group of people in HG or adventure over and over gets old, real quick. Mixing that up is good for the adventure experience.

  • @wolfmanbush i agree with choosing a region with random servers instead of choosing the exact server and also having a option where you can do random region
but i think some regions dont have many servers
i dont have clear information about this but i think in sea of thieves there arent many servers in some regions like eu
also in the problem of stream sniping they could add more stream sniping protection options
there already is some stream sniping protection options like anonymous name tags and stuff. streamers should be careful not to dox themselves in general whether if its easy to stream snipe or not

it really doesn't even need to be one of the less populated regions to see the effects of "small world after all" gaming in SoT.

The game has people but only so many are participating in the ecosystem of risk/reward or something like Hourglass. Far far less people doing that, so people see each other regularly in a lot of the regions.

Stream sniping in SoT is a lot of different things that gets clumped into one, including false accusations that fans of the creator take as fact.

There is very little they can actually do about stream sniping beyond just punishment after proving it. The malicious players always have a way. The clout chasers will always find a way (this can just be viewers trying to get screenshots/rewards as well)

Streamers share their gameplay in a small community, that's just always going to lead to a lot of non-organic experiences.

SoT culture is probably one of the worst as far as metagaming goes. The reason is because the regs do it all the time too. If streamers are regularly doing it and their regs in their chats are regularly doing it (mods/vips/reg subs) then it's just a part of SoT culture and pretty impossible to ever stop, it's just going to happen.

Lack of region selection is not protecting anybody from anything.

It will create more interesting fights with new opponents and will allow people to get out of their tiny player pools to go take a dip in a different pool.

I also strongly oppose this "protect a streamer" thing that goes on in live service games. They are the ones that have resources in games and on platforms to handle situations. The people they direct their influence at don't have that sort of power or those same kind of perks. Sharing gameplay is a choice, just like getting involved in public social media is a choice. That's why a lot of people don't do either, to protect their personal experiences.

  • @wolfmanbush if only we could get the devs on this it would be amazing

Well the problem there is that the feedback sections do a lot of talking but not necessarily a lot of action and the devs look at a lot of numbers which don't say anything about the quality of the experience or the "why" or "is it worth it long term"

A lot of regs in sot these days talk about sot more than they play it organically. That's not great because the decisions are affecting everyone, not just feedback cliques and regs and people that play in a lot of contrived scenarios.

The devs would be trying to determine if the pros outweigh the cons and if it's worth their resources.

That situation is where a lot of good ideas get benched and where a lot of not-so-good ideas get pushed through.

Imo, this increases the opportunity for a quality organic experience.

Whether that be random combat or a random adventure with different people from different areas.

I don't think it will be some big popular feature as far as numbers go, it's all about improving the organic experience for some.

  • @thepotato2524 the game automatically puts you on the closest server unless you select open crew. On open crew it picks from a wide range and sometimes you can end up on ships across the world from you.

If you still have high ping on closed crew on a ship you start yourself, it’s likely you are just far from the closest server location or have some internet issues.

Unfortunately SoT doesn’t actually have a lot of server locations, so high ping is very common, especially if you live outside of North America. You typically have good ping in NA regardless if you are east, west, or central. In Europe you need to be close to the server location and in the Middle East and Africa, you will just have high ping. There’s Asian and Oceania servers but certain ones are set to spin down after a certain time(middle of the night locally) and so you’ll have worse ping if you’re a night owl there.
