SoT Partners and hacking accusations

  • I think this is super important to discuss.

I’ve seen several Sea of Thieves partners respond to hacking accusations by players they’ve encountered out on the seas by saying “Yep, I’m hacking” and they continue saying it.

What generally happens after is gamer words. The players believe them that they are hacking and they lose their cool and say stuff they shouldn’t say.

Why are Sea of Thieves partners affirming something that isn’t true? I get that they are being sarcastic but the players they are fighting and winning against don’t perceive it as sarcasm.

I don’t think SoT partners should be allowed to falsely state they are indeed hacking when they aren’t. This makes the actual hacking problem seem worse than it is and as I said it often leads to gamer words which the partner then reports these players to Rare.

On the topic of gamer words, as much as it never appropriate to use them the players who do spout these foul words are often provoked by people Rare hand selected to represent the game.

I have 7k hours in SoT and the number of times I’ve heard someone use gamer words out of the blue without being provoked I can count on one hand. It’s rare.

So if a SoT partner is reporting multiple people for gamers words in a single day. It’s not a coincidence. Your partners are verbally provoking these players, angering them to the point where they don’t care what they say. Just because the partner isn’t using language that is technically ban worthy doesn’t mean they are entirely innocent.

Do with this information as you see fit.

  • This is a lot bigger than partners in one game.

Player content creation in general is terrible for the organic experience of live service games. It's just something that is always gonna be around live service games and something that worsens the organic experience.

The reality is that it's gonna happen whether they are partners or not. Especially in a smaller social bubble like SoT.

There is no real accountability in content creation other than whatever drama ends up happening on social media, and that's pretty far from any sort of substantive accountability.

Some streamers stream like 8+ hours a day, nobody is really gonna sit and hall monitor all that stuff. It's a bunch of over-reaction to in the moment stuff, a lot of it won't look good in most channels. Is what it is, it's a part of live service gaming.

  • If you believe a player has been toxic in the game or suspect foul-play, you can report them to Xbox Live here. You can also submit a support ticket via Rare Player Support. As this is a matter for Support and not the Forums, I'll be dropping anchor here.
