Advice to deal with toxic player

  • I was playing last night with my duo when I ran into a gally. One of the players started to say racist rhetoric, mainly slurs in reference to people of African descent. I didn't like that one bit, so I decide to sink the gally. The guy inquisition begins to say more slurs, only for the ship to sink. Not even 2 minutes later, they're back. After I get out of the ship's broadside, I decide to shoot over, and I deckshot. Before this my crewmate killed him and his crew quite a lot (to guard me from the broadside). I get killed by him and he proceeds to insults me more. Eventually (either on my first boarding attempt or second, idk) he tell me he will (paraphrasing), punch my teeth in irl. He then just keeps insulting as and as far as I know, he reported me and I could be banned.

My question: what can I do, do I report him, If I am banned can I appeal. I've met toxic players but never like this, I'm just looking for help.

  • Reported you for what?

In general with toxicity, use the report tool as you see fit.

If toxicity causes you to react in voice/text then it's best to leave.

If you can fight without reacting to whatever they say then gameplay is fine as long as you stay within the rules. Be real honest with yourself about this, some can do this and some cannot, many don't fully realize how they are reacting in this situation. Self-accountability is very necessary, be honest and accountable with yourself when reflecting on this.

Never react outside of fair gameplay. Never lecture on the seas. It will just range from you getting farmed for reactions to you reacting in a way that can get you in trouble.

Use the report tool as you see fit and protect yourself/people with you from prolonged interaction with encounters that are creating negative effects for you and/or your crew.

Escalation never works in random interactions online, lecturing in the middle of it never works, just dip or sink them and dip. Let the support crew figure it out if it comes to that and/or just get away from it and move on asap.

  • @wolfmanbush He reported me for "hacking", specifically, aimbot. I recorded the whole thing and I missed many times. keep in mind, hacking, on Xbox. Not even possible (as far as I know).

oh that's no biggie if you aren't cheating

people accuse people all the time in this game, if you aren't cheating then it's fine

  • Also thanks for the advice, no reaction best reaction, got it. Stick to fair gameplay, don't lecture.

I have a no reaction policy for myself and I follow a general code and then there are no issues.

I don't use the mic during unpleasant encounters. I don't respond, I just play until I don't wanna play anymore. I make it to where I have to set the mic up to talk to people in the game, this makes it to where I am speaking with intent as opposed to reacting in the moment in a public/targeted way.

No personal revenge, only gameplay revenge. Gameplay revenge would be sinking a boat or securing a win condition, personal revenge would be something like emoting on players after kills, firing back at whatever they say or do in communication.

No drama farming or engagement farming with anything that happens on the seas. No good person vs bad person stuff, it was an encounter and that's all it needs to be.

Then you really never need to worry about anything with Rare and just as important you'll stay outta sot drama.

The "leaf in the wind" style of piracy. It comes and then it goes and it doesn't become a big pile of unpleasant history that you'll have to deal with long term.

He is probably just trying to get you to react and panic, so best to ignore it. If you didn't do anything wrong, you should have nothing to worry about, since Rare demands actual proof with the reports before they act.

On a sidenote: cheating/hacking is very much possible on Xbox (or other consoles), with crossplay games it's not that common, since it's a bit easier to do on pc, but without crossplay you would see enough cheaters on xbox. Basic rule is that whenever electronics is involved, hacking(/cheating) will be possible and happen

  • I've found the best way to deal with a toxic crew would be to 'mute other crew voice and text'. I pop that on when I come across a ship with some vocal pirates. Then when they gone I unmute cause talkin with other pirates is awesome. But ya don't ever gotta listen to that kinda stuff, throws off the vibe. And don't worry about reports against you if ya didn't do nothing wrong.

  • I didn't like that one bit, so I decide to sink the gally.

Well....for starts. That sounds like you were one being toxic, just because you didnt like what they said, (Regardless)
    But anyways...

One of the players started to say racist rhetoric, mainly slurs in reference to people of African descent.

Screenshot, send to Support as a ticket. Write down names and be done with them.

    Also, MUTE is your friend.

  • @burnbacon, Im just trying to understand, how was I toxic. As a someone who is of African descent I felt that I was doing something right (hero complex). I guess not, but I do ask, If I meet similar people, should I sink them as I might do or just ignore and report later.

  • Btw, everyone advice has been helpful. I will keep in mind my own temper and (partial) short fuze in regaurd to toxic players, I just don't like it when such people can bring that stuff into SoT.

The most positive impact anyone is gonna ever have is how they lead, not how they monitor or signal.

Anyone can do the "they aren't one of us" thing, that's the easy part. The part that requires real effort and that has real positive impact on others is how you lead, how you treat people, how you conduct yourself in encounters, how you are when people don't have as much power as you do on the seas or as many options.

Nobody is gonna really remember these random unpleasant encounters that we have. People remember how we treat them behind the scenes, our consistency, our conduct and attitudes towards the sea and people. That's the real stuff and the good stuff.

  • @wolfmanbush gotchu, I'll give away a chest of legends or two today if I see someone new

Something that I personally find a bit heartbreaking but still very powerful is when people say something along the lines of "you are the nicest pirate I/we have seen so far". It doesn't necessarily require loot to create that.

So many people are nervous in this game, always watching out, always afraid of losing something. Sometimes just adding variety into the experience is enough to make a difference in the day of another.

Nothing wrong with sinking or robbing, it's the land and sea of pirates, but it's also adventure and a main point of adventure is being there for others along the way.

  • @wolfmanbush. Dang, that was something. Never really had someone say the "you are the nicest pirate I/we have seen so far" line, mostly its been either "thanks" or "why".

I'll try to follow and do all that you've told me tonight man, thanks for all the advice.

  • @fortgonz thats when you report the player's gamertag to microsoft, there is a function in the xbox live for reporting player's gamertags.
