Would a standalone remake game of Arena interest you?

  • Me and couple of friends have been hard at work in making our own game using Unreal Engine 5.4-5 for the past 8 months.

In a nutshell, a arena remake.
We've basically took inspiration from what the Arena was, meaning quick matches and fun arcade like gameplay elements from it. WE don't want to deviate and stray away from the genre that it had created.
Our main focus of the game's vision is to build upon what Arena could of had been, what made it great and what were its negatives, as well as putting our own twist in gameplay elements to it. Think of a replay/spectator system, Multiple naval gamemodes with more ships per server, a dedicate TDM gamemode on several little maps, etc... Of course all of these would be ''instant'' instead of spending and soaking up time to simply set them up which is currently the case in Sea of Thieves...

NOW. You may question games like Blazing sails that did the same thing in essence, so what can convince players to play our game instead, and why it won't fail?
There's too much to list here but Blazing Sails feels too bloated with weapon choice as an example, 'small' things that break immersion such as not being able to swim underwater, or the fact that the ships in that game play like race cars instead of actual weight of the waves/ships taken into account etc. We also have a completely different art stlye that isn't cartoony.

I'm pretty sure promotion is not allowed on this forum, so I guess if anyone is actually curious that can send me a private message instead if the mods are ok with that?

Overall I'm here to simply question people's reaction if they would indeed be interested in a more fully fledged out Arena'esque gamemode, and what they would like to see from it...

    • Our initial reactions on social media has been very positive so far, we also had a little follow from Mike Chapman himself over on X(Twitter) which I found was pretty cool and in return gives us a slight boost of motivation.

Again to make it clear, our intention is to definately not make a 1:1 copy of Arena, but to inspire from it's foundation that it built and foster a community from it, we want to make it similar to what the players loved about Arena, whilst taking into account why it ultimately failed and fix those mistakes.

  • I would be and so would some of me friends. I actually talked about this the other month, it would be so cool if the arena continued having support and how far it would be at if they never Alt+F4 it, and if they put the time into it instead of an update every 6 months. I don't care how much gaslighting RARE did as their excuse in culling it, they simply didn't put enough time and attention to it which is why it lacked players, toxicity could of been combated fairly easy, it's a lame main excuse they used imo.

I'm seeing a lot of people still talk about wanting the arena back here and there on various socials so the demand is there, Oddly enough more so then before.

I just personally don't think it do massive numbers since correct me if I'm wrong, but it's still a niche. It's a battle royale type game Afterall right?. BUT even having 10,000 dedicated players in your game I see it as a success if you can support and retain that. You can get a lot down with that.

I really respect the effort you are putting into creating your own game. Creating games isn't easy at all.
You also have to be prepared facing obvious criticism from the public saying it looks too similar to how sea of thieves plays, which isn't that the point of your game? Im sure you aware of that. You mentioned the artstyle is different, what is it exactly?

I will say though you got a lot more guts than 99% of people who hope for an Arena comeback that they will never get.

  • The thought of sitting ng in a lobby for arena again for 20 mins on end at a time is not something I would return too. It's a no from me , it was killed off and it should stay at the bottom of the sea.

I don't think you read my post at all and just skipped to your own conclusion based off the title, that's is it isn't it? Be honest.

    Appreciate the comment though.

It is a niche and we are aware of that, that's why we also want to market outside of SOT communities once the time is right to do so.

Yeah that is 100% going to happen no doubt, all I can say is I really don't care about critiques that drop one liners.
Artstyle is semi-realism best way to describe it. Think of CS-GO where it's not hyper realistic but also not fantasy art, best way I can describe it.

I will say though you got a lot more guts than 99% of people who hope for an Arena comeback that they will never get.

Funny you mention that, since I was once in that community, more so the competitive one, if we put half the energy in creating a brand new game then we did making making rip leagues of NAL, we would be somewhere today.

  • @ix-indi-xi It's a waste of time independent of the game or not. It didn't last with the sot population as it was and offered little in original gameplay. It was so underplayed that it was difficult to get a game even when a group wanted too. It would need something new to stand a chance of an audience to play it.

  • @hammy-hamstar I think that's the purpose he's aiming for seeing vid he sent.
It's a SoT inspired game with new additions tacked on. Think Blackwake and Sea of Thieves had a baby: Broadside.

Arena didn't fail because it was bad/boring (Depends on who you ask) but more so lack of updates and bugs that were present for months on end that should of been fixed in a day.

If OP game's wants to succeed nurturing it's release and listening to feedback would make it 10x more successful then Arena.
The pirate genre is always in demand.

  • How much would it cost, and what would it be available on?

Steam for starters, hopefully on console in the far future if we find it feasible if there's the playerbase demand and if we can expand our team to work on that.

In terms of price, we are thinking around the 10-20 USD/ Euro Mark, we threw around the thought of making it F2P with Micro-transactions in game, but decided not to, we want all cosmetics to be unlockable.
I think the price is more than fair for a live service game containing updates, free seasonal content etc. Also Steam regularly holds massive discounts up to 90%. So there's that.

I think I'll buy it's what I think, 20 bucks is more than agreeable for a arena based pirate game.

The best decision your team ever made was not adding in game purchases! Especially exclusive content only available through purchases! This makes the game feel cheap and yucky.

I suspect if you do a good job and make a good game with good graphics, names, characters, ships, you will have an extremely successful game.

I think if it's what I'm picturing it might be worth around 40 bucks, but only if it's free roam, and built to quality!

I wish you the best of luck, and hope my feedback helps! d=(^o^)=b
