[Q]: What was your introduction to the world of games?
[A]: I’ve been a gamer since I found out what video games were. The first PC game I played was The Oregon Trail and yes, we all died of dysentery. Games like Myst and Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? were favourites growing up! I never owned a console, so I first started playing console games when I went over to friends’ houses as a child. All the classics on the NES and SNES, and then the N64 came out and GoldenEye was our game. If you had told me then that years later I would be a Partner with the game developer who had created it, I wouldn’t have believed you.
My friends and I would go to LAN centres and play 5v5 pool day knife fights in Counter-Strike 1.6 for hours on end growing up, and once World of Warcraft came out on my birthday in 2004, I was hooked on gaming for life.
[Q]: How did you become part of the Sea of Thieves community?
[A]: I started playing Sea of Thieves right when it first came out! I had just started streaming and I wanted to check out this new sailing pirate game. Little did I know that I would find so much more on the seas than treasure… I found a family and I am so grateful every single day for our Sea of Thieves community.
[Q]: How did creating content become your ‘thing’?
[A]: As I mentioned earlier, I have been a gamer my whole life. Justin.tv and Twitch had only just become a thing in the early 2000s. I was end-game raiding WoW at the time and people would tell me so many times that I should get into streaming. I wish I had back in the early days, but as they say, things happen when they are meant to. I finally had the courage to start broadcasting on Twitch, April 1st 2018. It was the best decision I have ever made. Content creation has changed my life and I will be forever grateful and amazed at the community I have found here.
[Q]: How do you decide what kind of content to create?
[A] Our content is very community-centred. I truly believe that when good people come together, we can change the world. Our community focuses on positivity, LGBTQIA+, inclusivity, advocates for mental health, and we also support various charities. You never know what a stream will bring. It usually includes lots of giggles, burps, snorts and booms. Part of the reason Sea of Thieves is such an amazing game to play is that you never know what will happen on the sea. Will you end up in a sweaty PvP battle, or fish all stream? It has so many ways to play and I never get bored. We are currently working on one hundred percenting the game, we’re getting there!
[Q]: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced while creating content?
[A]: I work a full-time job, so I am only able to stream two weekdays and then all weekend. Balancing a healthy work, stream and life schedule can be tough, but it is 1000% worth it. I have discovered so much about myself and others through broadcasting and it has been one of the most amazing adventures of my life so far. I am so honoured that people want to come hang out and have found a home within our kitty community.
[Q]: What different channels do you have?
[A]: I am on Twitch and Twitter mostly. I have an Instagram that I upload to on occasion and I am trying to get more into YouTube content creation, while I am searching for an editor to work with.
[Q]: What’s been your most memorable Sea of Thieves moment so far?
[A]: There have been so many amazing moments on the seas, it is hard to choose. One that stands out is probably when we got the Shrouded Ghost kill, it was a complete surprise to us. The team behind Sea of Thieves must have thought so too, as it was featured as one of their top Sea of Thieves moments of 2019!
[Q]: What do you enjoy most about the game now, and what are you looking forward to in future?
[A]: I love that after so many years Rare still has the ability to surprise us with things like Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life. The devs work so hard every day and even through a pandemic, they continue to bring us new and amazing content. I am so excited to see what the future holds and to continue to see their passion come through on the Sea of Thieves. Every day is a new adventure.
[Q]: What’s something you’re particularly proud of accomplishing in gaming?
[A]: I think our first charity stream for AbleGamers back in 2019 where we did a 24-hour server takeover with so many members of the Sea of Thieves community. We all came together for this amazing cause, and we raised over $11,000 for charity! It really showed me how much potential games have to do good in the world. Since then, our community has raised over $33,000 for various charities while sailing on the seas. It really is amazing how broadcasting and Sea of Thieves has made this all possible.
[Q]: How did you come up with your channel name?
[A]: A friend of mine helped me come up with Freyline. My original Twitch name was my BattleTag (yikes). I’ve had the username Frey for years and years and my whole channel was based on kitties. So, one day my friend sat me down and was like, "Girl, we gotta talk about your Twitch name". We started to play around with Freya, which then led to Frey, and then it clicked. Feline and Frey... Freyline. It sort of ended up as a play on that. Plus, we LOVE our Norse mythology. Freyja rides in a chariot led by none other than two kitties.
[Q]: What do you like to get up to when you’re not streaming?
[A]: I love to game on and off stream. I’ve never stopped, I'm a gamer through and through. When I’m not gaming, I love taking walks through the woods, taking pretty photos, going out to eat and trying new and interesting foods. Spending time with my community and loved ones is also super-important to me. We have an active Discord server where the community talks and hangs outside of the stream. We have movie nights and pretty much a channel for everything! Naturally, we named it Ohana because we are family.
[Q]: What advice would you give to a new content creator?
[A]: Have fun and be yourself! Don't get too wrapped up in numbers and the current content creation fads. Network with others who are around your same type of community, whether it be a certain game or a streaming category. Create a schedule and stick to it! Consistency is key. Most importantly, remember to take care of yourself. Self-care is one of the most important things that content creators forget. Treat yourself as you would your best friend.
[Q]: What’s one thing you would advise a content creator not to do?
[A]: One of the hardest things about content creation is impostor syndrome. You must be kind to yourself with streaming and with life. Know things will not always go the way you want them to, but every single time there is a lesson. It is not a sprint, it is a journey and everyone's content creation experience is unique to them. Do not compare yourself to others, you are uniquely and wonderfully you, as is the community you've cultivated.
[Q]: Could you give us one more random fact about yourself?
[A]: I actually went to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) for illustration in college. I am sort of an artist who hasn't done any art in a while. I am looking to get back into it in the future and maybe incorporate art into streams. I think it would really be awesome to bring this side of myself back and share it with everyone.
Thanks to our guest Freyline for their wonderful insight into the world of content creation on the Sea of Thieves and continued charitable drives within the community – and of course for the moderation support on our Weekly Streams back in the day!
