[Q]: What was your introduction to the world of games?
[A]: As a kid, I lived in a very rural part of Arkansas, USA and didn’t have a lot to do. So my dad had a NES and a SNES that he let me play. I cannot tell you how many hours I put into Super Mario/Duck Hunt.
[Q]: How did you become part of the Sea of Thieves community?
[A]: I was definitely a Rare fan from a young age. I played Donkey Kong Country games quite a lot. I LOVED King K. Rool and got HYPED when he got put into Smash Bros. A friend of mine first introduced me to SoT when it was in Alpha. I played it then and thought it was pretty cool. Wasn’t till Beta that it really grabbed me though! I came for the pirate shenanigans and stayed for the memories and friendships I’ve forged!
[Q]: How did creating content become your ‘thing’?
[A]: It all started as a hobby to maintain sanity whilst working a graveyard shift factory job six nights a week. When beginning streaming, the largest appeal to me was meeting new people and creating a community of like-minded gamers. Literally, conversing with chat about all things gaming. When I started entertaining people more and more, I got HOOKED!
[Q]: How do you decide what kind of content to create?
[A]: This one is pretty funny actually. I usually play games where I can interact with others but my community ensures that I have fun no matter what kind of content I create. They joke around with me and troll me in the funniest ways. They’re the best. But before I thought this way, I’d watch clips that my community would create to see what content they enjoyed and try to recreate that!
[Q]: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced while creating content?
[A]: Number one challenge: burnout. Breaks are important. Other hobbies are important. Also, difficulty teaching myself video editing has been a bit of a speed bump. However, I have a video editor now so that’s fixed!
[Q]: What different channels do you have?
[A]: I stream on Twitch and post videos on YouTube! I also have my community Discord, The Copper Keg, that has hosted many community events such as server takeovers, game nights, in-game concerts by The Longest Johns, as well as a big immortalization community event featuring many SoT community members with in-game meet and greets with their fans. All that’s needed to join in these shenanigans is to join The Copper Keg Discord! We have links on Twitch and Twitter to get in!
[Q]: What’s been your most memorable Sea of Thieves moment so far?
[A]: A big standout moment for me in SoT was successfully stealing a PILE of (probably stolen) loot from a Reaper Emissary Sloop that was being pursued by another Sloop. I sank them both with island cannons as well as another crew that joined the fray. These crews didn’t give up easy. When it was all said and done, I had collected six ship sinks, killed many a pirate, and stolen a bunch of loot... with only a crate of supplies, a Rowboat (no ship), and no small amount of stubbornness. I call these ‘Kroboat adventures’.
[Q]: What do you enjoy most about the game now, and what are you looking forward to in future?
[A]: Rowboats are, HOOKS DOWN, my favorite addition to Sea of Thieves.
I’m looking forward to seeing more fun generated by Seasons and the shenanigans they bring! Also maybe one day double peg-legs in SoT? I’ll just cross my legs on that one.
[Q]: What’s something you’re particularly proud of accomplishing in gaming?
[A]: My greatest achievement in SoT or any game for that matter, is forging my way through uncharted waters, chasing my dreams of becoming a full-time content creator. Sea of Thieves is where I met most of my community that I’ve had the honor of surrounding myself with. Becoming a Sea of Thieves Partner was the first block in the foundation of my new career. On October 28th 2020, I celebrated my first anniversary of becoming a full-time broadcaster.
[Q]: How did you come up with your channel name?
[A]: NERD ALERT: KroTukk began as a Half-Orc barbarian in Dungeons & Dragons. But that name stuck with me for years through full-contact medieval combat sports like Dagorhir and SCA so it only felt natural to keep it!
[Q]: What do you like to get up to when you’re not streaming?
[A]: I have a lot of hobbies… my top two are Warhammer 40k Tabletop Wargaming and SCA heavy combat.
Warhammer 40k is a crafting hobby as well as a wargaming hobby where I build and paint models to play a massive wargame with friends. I play an army called Orks, which, like Tolkien and Warcraft and many other fantasy settings, are big brutish greenskin monsters. They are ALL about ramshackle vehicles, and take huge joy in neverending war.
SCA heavy combat is a full-contact combat sport within a medieval re-enactment society called ‘The Society for Creative Anachronism’. Participants compete in martial combat with weapons made of rattan and are required to wear armour and helmets for safety. I personally wear armour styled after historical pieces from the late 14th century, around the Battle of Visby.
[Q]: What advice would you give to a new content creator?
[A]: Something I wish I knew about streaming when I started: your brand is everything. Not just your graphics. Not just your alerts. It is literally YOU. You are the engineer of your own hype train. Play, stream, and create what makes YOU most happy and your community will back you no matter what.
[Q]: What’s one thing you would advise a content creator not to do?
[A]: Honestly, this is a hard question to answer because everyone’s walk in life is different. But if there was one thing I’d advise against, it’d be trusting any pirate by the name of Captain Thick Nick.
...or facial tattoos of your logo. I’d advise against that. Those tend to change a LOT.
[Q]: Could you give us one more random fact about yourself?
[A]: Fun fact: I have a pet Bearded Dragon named Kip. (Still hoping to have pet lizards in Sea of Thieves someday.)
And that wraps up another Creator Spotlight! Thanks to KroTukk for taking time out of his busy schedule of Voyages and plundering to talk to us. The rest of you pirates, be sure to keep an eye on the horizon for his fine ship The Majestic Man O’ Tea heading your way.
